This video is masterfully composed. Not only did I learn the difference between assimilation and accommodation, but I am stealing this way of teaching the difference.

This is great. I'm just now learning about this concept. One thing that occurred to me when I watched this video is how some people hear a new thing/opinion/update that doesn't jive with their world view. So instead of accepting something into a ready made star shape or making a new star shape, they cut off pieces so that it fits with the star shape. They refuse to admit that it is something other than a star shape.

According to Piaget, all biological organisms are motivated to simultaneously accept environmental changes and resist such changes. Humans can resolve this conflict simultaneously, cognitively. Accommodating new information into a given schema is basically accepting the new information; assimilating is basically resisting (conserving and maintaining) changes to previously established schema. THAT is assimilation and accommodation.

.... or you can think about what assimilate and accomodate mean. assimilate is to make similar... accomdate is to change the existing plan in order to fit things that otherwise wouldn't

She hasn't applied schemas. She is regurgitating what she has read. All you have to do and ask when and where she has applied it. I know because I applied it for 35 years in my history classes. The only I uncovered is most couldn't read. Most of them were juniors and seniors. It got me in trouble in all four school districts.

I just don't get who these lectures are meant for? Kids in concrete operational stage? Did she really need that kids' toy box nonsense just to say that sometimes schemas don't fit our new experience?? The content is good but the description and explanations are verbose, tortuous, unnecessarily lengthy and even silly. Waste of the audience's time - typical issue with Khan Academy.
