Schecter Corsair - The MOST versatile semi-hollow out there!? Let's find out! - LowEndLobster Review

EDIT: The buzz in this video during some of the playing was due to a lack of a power conditioner.
Hey everyone! Today we're finally reviewing my Schecter Corsair semi-hollow bass. This thing came out of left field and shocked a seemingly stagnant semi-hollow market. Featuring some killer passive EMG pickups and a two band preamp, is this the best semi-hollow out there? Let's find out!

Indeed. The Schecter, though great, isn't a keeper for me. The JC I have has been mine for almost a decade, and has personal value to me hehe. However, if I were looking between them nowadays and had to choose one, I'd probably end up with the Schecter. The bridge screws pulling out of the body was a major issue, even mine started to have it before Dom fixed it and installed the hipshot bridge.

I hear the Warwick Starbass is pretty versatile, according to Leeland Skylar. These hollow bodies are old beauties I think they are meant to be played really. I love basses that are either acoustic, semi or hollow, I practice on my Fender Acoustic pretty much all the time, the only downside is the thickness. Then when I play electric everything just feels much easier, because it is.

Hehehe, it's a tough choice! The Schecter is more versatile and doesn't need a new bridge. The hipshot upgrade for the Epi is a must. Tonally, the Epi doesn't have as wide of a tonal palette, but it does what it does well. If I were shopping for a hollowbody now and didn't have both, I'd get the Schecter IMO. That being said, I love my JC.

I was super skeptical going in that the Corsair could win me over - it sounded a little too electric in the first look video and versatility is not something I care much about in the context of a semi-hollow. The problem with the 3-point Gibson-style bridge (anchor pull-out) is not so much that it's a dumb design-it is-but rather that many users don't know how to adjust the relative heights of the tiny front support and the larger back/side supports. Adjust them the wrong way and you get too much of a vertical force vector on the back/side supports and they can want to lift off the top. Adjust them the right way, and most of the force is along the string line and the anchors stay right where they are. Correct adjustment, unfortunately, can be a bit counter-intuitive so you see lots of anchors hauled out. You can try to solve the problem with glue and so on, but correct adjustment-or a really nice Hipshot replacement-is the real solution. [Always enjoy your work, my friend. I'm keeping my Jack Cassidy, though. For years I had the Jack-recommended Blue Steel strings on it, but recently went to D'Addario black tapewounds to very good effect.]

I commented on this the other day, but I must have screwed it up....not the 1st time..but... Anyway.. I think we talked about this one before?? I agree, Schecter does seem to be "stepping" up their stuff. I think it looks like, if you were looking to get hollow/or semi hollow bass, You can't really go wrong. It is lucky that they don't hold their value, makes getting a used one well worth it. New, is really steep for a bass that looses a couple to few hundred dollars as soon as it leaves the store. But I'm a person that feels "buy an instrument because it feels good to you, not your peers" and it looks like this bass is a player/workhorse. I don't know why I thought I need to say all of this. I think it was just fun pushing buttons and making words. Now that I've done that I think I will slowly back up into the shadows. Cheers and thank you for sharing.

You talk about the knobs but you don't talk about what they do I guess they're just volume and tone but I don't get how you switch between pickups?? Thx!

one thing i couldnt help to wonder if the hipshot bridge like on your jack casady would work on the consair. i like that bridge better. also do you have suggestions for a replacemt for the cover on the head stock i agree it could use somthing little nicer. besides that. only think i dont care for is the strap button on the horn instead of behind the neck like the jack and other basses of this style. oh since i never used a pre amp. does it still work as well or close without the battery? oh one more thing do you suggestion for a case since sadly dont come with one, which for the price they should include one. thanks for the video. i wouldnt known about this bass if i didnt come across it.so thank you again.

Hi Michael! I don't think there's any hipshots for this model as it's using a tune-o-matic style two piece bridge. There may be some aftermarket options out there, but IMO not as big of a deal here as I wasn't seeing the same issues like I saw with the stock Jack Casady bridge, where the three point bridge slowly gets ripped out of the body over time.

@@LowEndLobster well they do make this but as you can see only half could maybe work. if you can and thank you for replying to my comment. if you can give me your thoughts on that bridge. hipshotproducts.com/collections/bass-bridges/products/4-string-d-style-bass-bridge?variant=43154629128

The head stock shape and those large tuners look out of place with the rest of the instrument. Was sold on the look until I saw that head stock and tuners.

Thanks KJC! I dig the headstock, but yeah it's not for everyone. What would be your preference, a more traditional Gibson/Jack Casady style?
