Interestingly enough, Scharnhorst did not have any yellow paint on the roofs of her turrets, and this was because yellow paint on the roofs was something Germany did when the ships were undergoing sea-trials and gunnery trials after being completed. Bismarck and Tirpitz, Gneisenau, all the Deutschlands, the Admiral Hipper Class Cruisers as well all had them during their trial periods after being completed and disregarded the paint on the roofs after they were handed over to the navy and got their proper wartime camos. Just before Scharnhorst and her sister Gneisenau had their bows rebuilt in 1940, they did have coloured turret roofs. IIRC Gneisenau had blue, and Scharnhorst was either red or infact yellow. But she did not have yellow turret roofs when she went down in 1943 against HMS Duke of York. Interesting that this model has the bow anchor removed, but that's also correct since it was removed during her 1942 refit because it caused excessive wash over the deck in high seas and also when the bow "plunged" into the ocean.

The bismarck painted the roof of her turrets yellow for aircraft identification when she was returning to Brest on her final voyage, I wouldn't be surprised if the Scharnhorst did this too since she did have some spotter aircraft on her final voyage too but I haven't heard about them being painted

I'm going to buy a kit in a few days time to build the HMS Galatea and hopefully have it built and painted for fathers day, any tips ? I've only ever built warhammer models :S I'm definitely going to look up that pre-designed deck you bought, nice idea!
impressive, picked up quite a lot of tips for working on ship models. Thanks for the video.
Stumbled upon this video, and it was great!! I am in awe of your mastery of such small photoetch parts. I would have pulled my hair out, if I had any... Thank you for a great video!!!

@@ScaleModelAssassin You should see what I got going...and this is what I have that's open...Tamiya Ducati, Revell Strike Eagle and the re-released Monogram 1/8 1979 Trans Am. Now that it is getting colder, the sprayworks brush is coming out!
Superb build in this absolutely tiny scale! :)

You are one of the masters at building ships even though you say you have no experience in it . It all seems so easy even though I know it isn't. and the way you present it with your jokes makes it even more interesting to watch. Good work, I hope to see more of that in the future but in 1/350 scale or maybe 1/200 😉😃

A 1/700 scale Arado 196?? I can barely cope with 1/72! Incredible job!! That deck sticker really does add a huge amount, but all that etch in the kit too.

Troppo BELLA 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very good work indeed. The turret tops and swastikas were for identification to own airforces. During the Norwegian campaign in 1940, British ships began copying the colour of the turret tops to confuse Luftwaffe pilots. By comparison, in WW1 German battleships and battlecruisers used dark grey turret tops with white circles.
@ScaleModelAssassin

Thanks, didnt know about the white circle tops. I figured it was for identification....but I guess it works for both sides in battle
Very nice job ..

In the typical Atlantic weather the ship itself would be hard to spot from above, let alone the paint work. The British pilots couldn't locate the Bismarck for days, despite that they knew where to look.
Really great work! Flyhawk kit really tortures some people but they made the best 1/700 model ship kits so far. You can try to add some welding line details since it is a full hull version.
@ScaleModelAssassin

Agreed! Welding lines would increase the torture level haha. They definitely add to the interest level though
Great!

hello... new to model ship building... i have been modeling N scale railroad for 30 years... now i want to try my hand at military ship building...i am modeling 1/700 & going to do my version of the USS Saratoga in 1968/69 with it's support ships... you did an awesome job on this entire project.. BTW i did sub.. thx 4 sharing... vinny...aka da cuzzz

Nice! Good luck with your build and thanks for the support
The swastika markings were air recognition markings. The Regina Marina had red and white "candy strips" on the bow and stern. Air recognition was a big problem. Remember the HMS Sheffield (British heavy crusier) was attacked by Swordfish torpedo planes because they thought she was the Bismarck. Luckily no torpedoes hit home.
The yellow paint on top of the main gun turrets, as well as the bow and stern swastikas were meant as a friend recognition for the Luftwaffe while in friendly waters. These recognition features would be removed, covered or painted over whenever the Kriegsmarine ships sailed outside the areas covered by the Luftwaffe ;)

This might have solved the puzzle for me on why it had so many paint schemes. I knew the colors were for friendly recognition, but didn't realize they obscured/repainted them when sailing to unfriendly waters. Makes perfect sense, awesome!
I think FlyHawk make the best 1/700 scale. Unfortunately my eyes struggle with this scale... Nice video and build 👍🤔

Yea no kidding this stuff is tiny. I would agree that Flyhawk is top notch. Fujimi is close but I supplemented my Kongo build with Flyhawk (no joke) photo etch. Ive built a handful of other brands that dont have videos on my channel and they are far behind.

Digital microscopes are quite cheap nowadays. For basic photoetch work they're good at any scale I guess.
The flags were for aircraft Identification.
very nice work! i am retired now and just getting back to the hobby, i have the 1/700 iowa and went ahead and also bought the wood deck and am looking for any tips on laying this decking down so i do not end up with a small pile of decking!!
@ScaleModelAssassin
Жыл бұрын
Have fun! The deck isn't too hard but I'd say don't peel the backing off all at once. Just get it started and apply the deck bit by bit, exposing the sticky backing as you go along pushing it down. Sometimes there are some flimsy small sections of decking connected to the 1 large main piece. I'll cut those off beforehand and apply them separately.
I’m guessing the deck was Shipyardworks?
May I ask what brand of wooden deck do you use? I'm looking to use

@@ScaleModelAssassin soo that long it takes etc... to look like a real beautiful ship model.. Are there gonna be cruisers too in the future? If i may ask&know
I am working on this kit right now. I am struggling with the photo etch guide! Utterly horrible! Flyhawk really needs to up their game in that department. I am just trying my best to muddle through but other than that the kit is beautiful! I have their Bismarck deluxe waiting after I finish Scharnhorst.

I think Flyhawk has the most detailed 1/700 kits on the market. I have their Bismarck as well and the lessons I am learning from the Scharnhorst should make that one easier and any others I buy in the future and I will! @@ScaleModelAssassin
Where do you get your Flyhawk Models? I tired amazon but had gotten the orders canceled twice

I think I replied to your other comment elsewhere, but just in case anyone else is curious, I bought it off eBay. I usually spend quite a bit of time searching for a model and go in fairly open minded since many times I need to be able to purchase the extra photo etch / accessories in addition to the ship. It can be hard to find all of these items for a reasonable price so I might pivot from the initial idea I had if I cant find all the parts I want.
Schon komisch.

You are both correct, and I wanted to build a ship that was less common than the Bismarck or Yamato. It also has a few more colors than only battleship grey which is nice. I am glad you both enjoyed the video!
