Scentwork: teaching a passive indication
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Scentwork UK have a network of trainers who help people to train their dogs to search for scents, in the same way as customs & excise dogs, bomb explosive dogs, search & rescue dogs and medical detection dogs.
One important aspect of scentwork is the "indication" - how the dog shows that they've found the right scent. This indication can be either active or passive. Active indication is where the dog tries to get to the item - for example actually grabbing the article they have found.
In this video, Heather focusses on passive indication, where the dog does a behaviour to indicate that they have found what they were looking for while leaving the article unimpaired. Heather explains, step-by-step, how to teach this and what to do when things go wrong.

This answered my problem exactly, thank you. My dog has played find it with his ball for years, now we're trying scent work and he's super at finding it but then retrieves it instead of indicating. I'm going to take a step back while I teach him a passive indication.
Very well thought out and understandable tutorial. My dog took classes in this last year and I am going to start it up again, just for fun. This gave me some new ideas. Thanks.
I was wondering about putting the scented swab on surfaces like between the door on the floor. Are you not concerned about leaving residual odours. Wouldn’t that make future scent work tricky?
How would you encourage a dog to do this if they paw at the scent?
The 1st dog was wearing the red harness for scent work. Is that significant?

They can help remind the dog that now it's time to search, when the harness is on. It's useful, especially if you do other sports with your dogs but otherwise it's not needed

that dog wearing the harness is a medical detection dog, so its likely for the organization. but just like service dogs, it can help them to learn that when the harness is on its time to work
what kind of dog is this in the beginning of the VID
