I can't believe you showed the left side of the train as it was headed into and leaving Pinhao. The right side of the train on that section into Pinhao and then to Tua has some of the most spectacular scenery of the river. You blew it.

This route is really beatiful! The section between Régua and Pocinho is really wonderful. I hope they reopen the closed section between Pocinho and La Fuente de San Esteban (Salamanca) with its numerous tunnels and bridges!

Thank you for your comment skyakkutsk! I had read about the Salamanca extension that existed until some decades ago, hopefully that section can be revived.

Sadly they will never re-open the closed section because there just not enough traffic to justify the cost of repairing the line for either tourists or locals. The infrastructure is too expensive to maintain compared to boats operating on the Douro. I was extremely fortunate to travel from Porto to Salamanca just two or three years before the line closed when I was using an Interrail card. I had no idea about the line, but it looked like the shortest route from Porto to London. Wow! What a surprise, the valley was beautiful. I was 18 when I travelled the line in 1983 and I guess there are not many people under the age of 50 who will remember it today. It does make me feel old :-( For what it is worth, it took FOREVER to get from Porto to La Fuente de San Esteban - nearly 2 days. When I arrived at Barca D'Alva on the Portugal/Spain frontier at about 17:00 after travelling from Porto, my Portuguese was not good, but I managed to ask the station manager what time the next train to Spain would arrive. The reply was, "14:30, amanhã tarde". I had to find somewhere to sleep because there was only one train every day that crossed the border. Fuck! I made friends with some Portuguese students who were exploring the countryside and managed to sleep in their car. The Douro valley line is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.

My recommendation in Porto is : visit Jardim do Morro in Vila Nova de Gaia and after the sunset have a dinner in Bistrô Bom Gosto, the same side of the river. They have a fantastic food.

Moviemagic, I think Peso da Régua and Pinhão would be two places to visit along the Douro rail line. Pocinho at the end of the line is a very small place but the train ride is interesting.
