I've been jamming out to your Dream Theater reactions and I was surprised by home many there were. You guys seem to really enjoy the mind blowing skills of John, John, Jordan, James, and Mike. That's a lot of J names. anyway i noticed you haven't done a few of my favorites so i'm going to take a break on streetlight and send you my top dream theater picks. this first one is called home from the concept album Metropolis pt.2: scenes from a memory. as james likes to say, "this is the metal song on the album!"
Пікірлер: 83
The whole Metropolis pt2 album is their masterpiece... you should listen to the whole album, as it's a concept album where all the songs are linked and a lot of the musical motives come and go along the album in different songs... if you like Dream Theater, you MUST listen to that album... the most proggie they have by long

@@weefekI saw them on the Scenes from a Memory tour in the early 2000s at a small club in NYC. It was standing only and was packed in nuts to butts. I was overheated for the entire concert and felt so sick. Despite that, it was an amazing show as they played the album front to back with a screen behind them telling the story. I’ve seen them more times than I can count in the 90s and early to mid 2000s and they always put on an amazing show. I’m from Long Island, which is where they are from, and have been following them since they were called Majesty. I wasn’t a big fan of their original singers voice though. He was a hell of a singer, but he made them sound way too much like Rush. It’s too bad James LaBrie’s voice is in the shape it’s in now. He’s just not near the singer he used to be. I know our voices degrade some as we age, but he has fallen off pretty drastically, especially after he got sick sometime in the mid 2000s I think is when it happened. It’s not entirely his fault, because their touring schedule when overseas is grueling and James never got much of a chance to rest his voice. That likely contributed to him damaging his vocal cords more than he should have. That’s not a jab at James, it’s just reality. He still sounds ok, just not the stellar live powerhouse singer he was when I was seeing them live. Still love the band, and I always will. Especially because I’m a guitarist and Petrucci is just insane.

@@KingOrpheus I don’t remember any sort of blizzard at the time. Maybe that was the show they recorded for the DVD that had the live actors? This one, I think the weather wasn’t that cold, but it’s so hard to remember that much detail from a concert 24 years ago heh. Certain things stuck with me, like how sick I felt due to being so closely packed in, but nothing about the weather stuck with me, so their likely wasn’t anything special about it.

Yep! This album is like a book and the songs are the chapters. It’s a masterpiece.
My buddy Jason Dozer made James’ mic stand. He’s based here in Georgia. Does incredible work.
I was fortunate enough to attend the Scenes From a Memory tour in 2002. Dream Theater played the entire two CD album in two sets, with this song being the first in the second set. (They went on to play a third set of their older material, a true marathon!)

yesssss please more dt
This song belongs to my favorite album called Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory, and the whole album is telling a story, so each song is kinda linked to each other piece by piece until you figure out what happened.
Saw this live in Raleigh. One of the greatest concept albums ever. DT is my favorite.
The intense energy in their music grabs hold of you and doesn't let go.
It’s called GeoShred. It’s an app that Jordan (keyboardist) developed with apple
As it says in the title, "Home" is Scene 6 of the absolutely magnificent Metropolis Part II: Scenes From a Memory album, probably the best concept album ever written, whether prog or non-prog. It's musical story-telling at its finest. You've already reacted to Scene 4: Beyond This Life (that crazy live version from Budokan where they do an incredible 10-minute improv section - I recall Travis saying something like "that's a cool back story" about the images shown in the background) and to Scene 7: The Dance of Eternity (the second or third DT song you reacted to, also a live version, this one from the Boston Opera House, which is the epitome of progginess). The entire album deserves a reaction and some KZread reaction channels have already done so, mostly having to break it down into parts because of the length. Together with the whole Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence album and Octavarium, SFAM is Dream Theater at their peak.
I recommend the song octavarium from the album of the same name. They played it once with a classical orchestra, I think in a special concert in NY. The song is incredible on the album, but with the vibes of the orchestra it's amazing
The iPAD instrument Jordan is playing is an ap he invented. Really cool shit.
Probably one of my favorite DT songs they really are gods
I seen them 7 months ago it was insane
The Masters came and delivered, insane! That album "Scenes from a Memory" is a amazing concept album. One of the best!
Wow. James sounds really good in this.
As many already typed in the comments. This entire album Metropolis Pt:2 Scenes from a memory is the best Concept and my total favourite DT album ever done. And yes you guys should do a reaction to this entire album.

There’s actually two M s. Mike Portnoy was the original drummer. Mike Mangini is his replacement.

another face melting extravaganza from DT - thanks for the reaction y'all
The keyboardist created an app so that he could play on that tablet!
One of my fav DT songs
I discovered dream theater in 2006 and i still feel there's lot more to discover about them
Jordan is using one of his apps that he developed and plays on the iPad...e.g. GeoSynth or MorphWiz

I've thought about sending this one to you guys a few times. It's just there's so few times when I have time and money to burn to send you stuff. I've been sending videos for a little over a year and I've only been able to do it 7 times total. I do actually have a list (a playlist of youtube videos I have saved) of bands/songs I do want to send to you at some point. This was one of them, but I can cross that one off the list now. As for the song itself, this is personally my favorite Dream Theater song. When Metropolis P2: Scenes From A Memory came out I was obsessed with it, but this song most of all. This was the first song of theirs I loved so much I wanted to learn to play it on drums. I got 90 percent of it by ear alone, but then I found out the original drummer, Mike Portnoy, had an drum instructional home video called Liquid Drum Theater (as he's also the drummer for Liquid Tension Experiment) where he plays this song in it and practically wore out that section of my VHS playing it over and over again watching his hands and feet until I got it exactly right (Did the same thing with Acid Rain too). One of the first songs I ever learned to play on drums when I started getting really serious about it in my youth.

Rudess is a true Wizard!
I recommend the album Awake by Dream Theater (if you haven't already reviewed it) from 1994. Pick any song, they're all good. It's one of their heavier albums, before Jordan Rudess was involved. Kevin Moore plays keyboards. It's probably my favorite DT album

Mangini é sensacional. Uma excepcional bateirista.
Yes, The greatest song in human history. The original version Live in bucharest 2002 is much better
But i prefer the old live sound, when jordan still use kurzweill and petrucci ibanez guitar.. and james still has the sharp and high note vocal...
I submitted a request months ago for a Dreamtheater song..still waiting 😢

DT ... how on earth do they do it ?
This was my favorite until Panic Attack
Pleeaaaaaaseeeeee listen A change of seasons live scenes from newyork It's EPIC
🤟
Technically there are two Mike's. First Portnoy then Mangini
I have tried to picture a replacement for James. But I came up with the perfect female voice. Pictuce Rebecca Lovell from Larkin Poe. Her voice would be perfect!

You need to do palyphia
Believe it or not, this isnt even the good version of the song. On the "Live Scenes from NY" dvd, Petruccie plays one of his most epic solos he dosnt play on this version of the song.
excellent version but I'll stick with Metropolis pt. 2 live new york
For a DVD, this crowd wasn’t it at all. I know us DT fans just stand there and watch them play 95% of the time. Can’t be sitting down the whole show. None the less Metropolis Pt2 is one of the greatest albums of all time.
2002 live version is waaaaay better with Portnoy on the drums and LaBrie in his good shape

Portnoy has a fire and intensity to his playing that Mangini lacks. I really miss it.
I wish reactions for DT had the right drummer who helped write them. Song have a different feel depending on who plays them. Love Portnoy and Mangini, please show them playing their parts and not covers.
Did you pick up the moans?
Eyes closed… can still tell it’s Mangini. I mean no offense to Mike because he’s a fantastic drummer. But portnoys feel makes this songs lifeblood. The slow 4/4 beat under the verse… mangini plays it perfectly. But that’s the problem. Portnoy plays it with character.
Auto tune really helped out in this one

Quit talking over the music. PAUSE
This version of the song is actually terrible for me. Dream Theater lost that sharpness and tigthness they were used to have. In this version they are more of a floating melo lunatics. That (supposed to be heavy) riff at the begining of a song lacks that tightness, that punch. I don't know man. I think like Mike Portnoy was giving guts to the band. Mangini is so precise, slow and uninspiring in his play here because whole song is played slower that it should be.
