Amazing how isabelle manages to convey so much by doing so little, I think that is one of the key scenes, she's trying to keep all her feelings inside, whilst really she knows her barriers are collapsing! incredible performance.

I love how Haneke kept the camera very far away from Isabelle in the beginning (anyone else would have given a close-up to her facial expressions when Walter came in), only getting closer and closer to her as the music transits from Schöneberg to Schubert, and as her psychological defense collapses.

I adore Benoit Magimel - as a actor and as a incredible beautiful men (especially in films from the beginning of this century: 'Fleur de mal' and 'Mademoiselle de honore' of Claude Chabrol and, yes, this film of Haneke very much too). I am so sorry, that he is not gay. Or maybe he is, who know? I think, he have some homosexual side, as a deep, but clear, cold and silent secret, which he never will live openly. Very sad indeed...

I agree it would be a sad thing if it were true (as I believe it is true for MANY men because homosexuality is what we are shamed about the most), but if it’s not true and that’s not the case then it’s not sad at all & just your fantasy : )
Wtf? Why did he go from Schoenberg directly into the Rachmaninoff like that??? Ridiculous edit. And none of you commentors noticed this?

It is a jump cut to show the passage of time, how is that so confusing to you? The purpose of the scene is to show her reaction to his playing, not to be a spectacle of the music itself, thus it does a jump cut instead of showing the performance in its entirety because that would be unnecessary, the cut makes perfect sense

God awful scene. The ONLY reason the camera is on Hubert is to avoid showing the pianist who is not really playing what we hear. RIDICULOUS. And the director doesn't think we know this?

The focus of this scene isn't the performance itself but its effect on Erika. We obviously wouldn't be able to see that effect if the camera focused on the pianist's hands the whole time.
