I was recently contacted by the company, SHARPAL, who, seemingly taking pity on my pitiful sharpening abilities, offered to send me some of their diamond sharpening stones in exchange for a video review of their products. Never having been one to turn down free stuff I happily obliged and was very pleasantly surprised. I LOVE these sharpening stones. I had never used a diamond sharpening stone before in my life so the ease of use, cleanliness, and ability to hone an edge far better than anything I've historically done with standard whetstones really blew me away.
I was not paid or sponsored to make this video, the opinions I express in it really are my own.
SHARPAL is using my channel as a platform to host a giveaway of each of the stones I used in this video as well! Details are below!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giveaway rules:
Ⅰ- This event is open to residents in the US and EU only.
Ⅱ- Subscribe my channel, comment and share this video.
Ⅲ- Sharpal will randomly pick 2 winners from the eligible subscribers to win Sharpal 156N or Sharpal 162N prizes.
Ⅳ- This event runs from April 16th through May 7th, 2019. Winners will be chosen randomly during this time.
Ⅴ- The winners will be announced on May 9th, 2019. (The second day after the end date of the giveaway event)
Ⅵ- Sharpal reserves the right of final explanation.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coupon codes (Valid until 5/16/19):

Pro tips: 1) Concentrate more on the tip when you sharpen. Most of your strokes leave the stone before the tip contacts it. 2) If you must use water to get the steel shavings off the stone, thoroughly dry the stone before putting it away. Micro cracks in the nickel coating in which the diamonds are embedded will allow any remaining moisture to start the underlying steel to rust, resulting in the nickel/diamond layer to flake off. Use a hair dryer to thoroughly dry the stone. Or put it in your toaster oven at 200*F for 10 min.

Your Mora actually has a scandi grind and you dont need any angle guide to sharpen it. Just hold the edge flat on the stone/plate and just sharpen. The bevel is so large that it will be easy. You really shouldn't change the angle on scandi because you will remove too much blade material if you do.

Great Vid and review. I'd also recommend the Sharpal Buddygard, a hand held dual grit diamond stone which also comes with a leather stealth which can be used as a strop. Ideal for the backpack!

Nice units. I like the big one. Here’s a method for you to try. 3 different, progressive angles. Start with a low angle on the coarse side. Flip the blade after every stroke. This stage will take the most time. Be sure to lock your wrist throughout the stroke to maintain the angle. When the freshly cut surface gets very close to the edge you are ready for stage two. Here’s where things start to go quickly. Raise the spine of the blade about 5 degrees. Locked wrist, flip blade every stroke. You will only need about 10 to 14 strokes total. Stage 3. Flip stone to fine grit. Raise spine 5 more degrees. Angle is critical, lock that wrist. Flip every stroke. Don’t bear down hard. 8 or 10 strokes and you’re done. The 3 angles provide support directly behind the edge for durability and greatly reduce the amount of steel being removed in stage 2 and 3. Freshening up the edge later only requires stage 2 and 3.....very quick. Maintaining the angle throughout the stroke is what makes this work so concentrate on locking the wrist(s) and stroke with arms and even upper body. 🤜🤛

I'll put it down on the list of future video topics! Basically the trick is to use a MAP gas torch (hotter than propane) and to angle the flame up the edge of the blade, quenching quickly into water as soon as you think it's hot enough. If this doesn't work you won't hurt anything by trying again. It's not the easiest way to harden up a knife edge by any means but its been pretty reliable to get 1095 edges to file hardness for me in the past. This is pretty much the only method that I recommend quenching in water by the way. Learned that the hard way. Hahah

14 seconds from 6:32 to 6:46 shows completely how to sharpen a knife. This means 97.8% of this video is a waste. Many knife sharpening videos are over 10 minutes long? Why?

  • @80gritschmidt51

To be entirely honest the reason you see most KZread videos being around 10-15 minutes is because that's the length of video the KZread algorithm typically promotes. It's important (and sometimes annoying) for us to leverage the algorithm so our videos have the highest chance of being viewed and we have the highest chance of receiving ad revenue. :)
