Scary 3-Day Backpacking Trip | Northover Ridge, Kananaskis, Alberta |

On this 3-day & 2-night backpacking trip (July 27-29, 2019) in the Canadian Rockies, we experience everything from extreme wind, ridge top lightning, hail, and bears. The trip definitely tested our limits but left a great sense of accomplishment. Not to mention the great views!
Northover RIdge is located in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada with the trailhead starting at Upper Kananaskis Lake. It's a 40+ km loop with almost 2000 m of elevation gain.

    Saw in the news that the storm hit most of the Alberta Rockies. One woman got struck, knocked out, suffered short term memory loss, and had to be helicoptered off a mountain. Two other people were struck and had their shoes blown off and their pants catch on fire then melt! We got pretty lucky!

    The Frogg Toggs UL2 suit is usually my go to, but I've been testing out their emergency jacket to see how it stands up. It is not very durable, as you can see! Other than the wind ripping it apart, it also got quite a bit of abrasion on a canoe trip I did. The Frogg Toggs UL2 has been a champ though.

    Fun area to explore! Last time I was in there, we followed a grizzky for a few km down trail, and got stuck in a blizzard climbing up to three isle. Had to bail and camp at forks instead. Group trips to awesome areas are always the best! Kudos to you 4 getting through in that weather. Most people turn back with any wind on that ridge, let alone hail. Bad ass stuff!

    Loved the video Justin. We just got home from our Northover Ridge adventure a few hours ago. Yours definitely looked way more extreme, we had pretty much the most ideal weather imaginable. Glad you guys made it through okay. PS. That same critter got our food bag too, he's definitely well fed.

    Nice! Are you going to be posting a video? I'd love to see the ridge under good weather. We were in survival mode so didn't have much time to look around. The only way I could see for the critter to get in is the little holes where there should be a locking mechanism. I think sticking a rock in that hole might prevent the critters from getting the food. This just reminded me that I wanted to write an email to parks!

    Great video. I am heading out next week. I was a little worried about snow on the ridge but it looks like that was one of the things you didn't have to deal with. Were you able to walk around Hidden Lake or did you have to bushwack?

  • @JustinOutdoors

    @JustinOutdoors

    5 жыл бұрын

    We didn't have snow issues at all. Didn't even need microspikes. We had to follow the inland trail for Hidden Lake. No bushwacking though! There is one spot with some fallen trees that you have to go over. At that spot there is a dull path that goes left, but go over the fallen trees and you'll get back on the more established trail next to the lake.

  • @JustinOutdoors

    @JustinOutdoors

    That was an intense trip! The Aster and Three Isle campgronds do need to be booked in advance through the Alberta Parks website. You can camp at Northover Lakes (in the alpine on the south side of the ridge and in BC) without booking but I'd be wary of weather. The lakes are in the alpine and very exposed. If it gets windy, you'll have troubles keeping your tent up. There is pretty much no shelter from the elements at the lakes.

    How do you deal with the water along the way? Is it safe to just drink the filtered water from the lake/river?

  • @JustinOutdoors

    @JustinOutdoors

    I used a Sawyer filter to filter water for the trip. No issues drinking the filtered water! I probably could have drank straight from many of the streams and been fine!

    I came home and developed Giardia a week later from Aster lake campground? I was too cold to treat the water properly with pristine so did a half baked job. On that trip I used SpotWX for the weather it predicted 2” of snow and minus 10 and that’s what we got. There is a stand of trees just below the campsite where we put up a tarp for food prep.
