Scars of Freedom - An entangled whale

Scars of Freedom documents the repercussions of human negligence juxtaposed with the incredible power of human compassion. An entangled humpback whale left for dead; a fishing net, her anvil. On location for a documentary film off the coast of Chile, we heard a radio call that a fisherman had spotted an entangled whale. A net, estimated to weigh 250 kilograms, had cut halfway through one side of her tail. Though untrained for such missions, we set off to her rescue and captured incredible footage. Beautiful images of humpbacks swimming through the protected waters off Hawaii contrast to the trauma of this story, concluding with a powerful statement: 'Change begins with the heart.'

Gabriel Morero, Do you really believe that all of them do it intentionally or negligently? Have you ever fished? Are you so perfect? Millions, if not billions of people depend upon fish harvested from the sea. Would you have them all starve? Or perhaps you believe that their lives are of lesser value? I am sure that there are those that could care less about the damage they do. I seriously doubt that they are more than a tiny minority. Even if you only consider the cost in dollars, no fisherman wants to spend more money replacing lost equipment. It is incredibly expensive! Look up the cost a fishing equipment. It will blow your mind. Even the most ruthless of fisherman would prefer keeping and retrieving all of their equipment. You are awfully quick to judge and condemn people to death. I'm pretty sure that no one would ever promote or elect you to ANY position that requires judgment and reasoned decisions.

Please don't say human beings, grouping us all together. There is a very small number of people that are deliberately causing harm through carelessness and greed. But I'm pretty sure that for every single person that causes harm to this planet and the wildlife, there are at least 100 people doing good things to and for our environment. Do you only see evil? Perhaps an eye exam would help. Have you ever met anyone deliberately fouling this world? More likely you generalize and blame some nebulous groups of people that are doing the best they can to destroy the world. Pretty stupid, if you think about it.

I've seen loads of these rescues from entangled fishing equipment which just goes to show how much garbage we leave in the oceans and it's truly distressing to think how many don't get saved. We really need to start being proper stewards of this planet and not just selfish reckless abusers of this beautiful world and its other inhabitants.

When the persistence and responsible behaviour of good natured people achieve an objective that is a benefit to the earth and all of the inhabitants therein, I applaud their efforts! And admire them for what they do! Those are extraordinary people!!! But, when the persistence of bad natured, irresponsible people brings death and destruction, that is a detriment to the earth! This really disturbs me on so many levels!!! Those kind of people are abusers, exploiter's and neglector's!!! And yes it is true, I agree, we need to be good stewards of this beautiful planet we are so incredibly blessed with by the creator of both the heavens and the earth!!

Wouldn't it be great if each fishing vessel had to pay a tax, and every time a creature got entangled in *any* net whatsoever the whole of the tax went up for every vessel. The fishermen would soon sort the problem out if they were losing money due to other vessels' incompetence. And yes, those nets need to be inspected and tagged with the owners details. This problem could be solved, but it looks as if the powers that be really don't want to put steps in place to solve it

Believe it or not, due to Tweakers stealing every bit of copper they can get their hands on, most suppliers of wire now come with identifying marks on The Wire and insulation. Every little piece can be tracked to the owner, helping scrap metal yards determine whether or not the scrap metal is owned by the person trying to sell it. Something similar could easily be done with the rope and line used to build fishing nets. Conscientious countries would probably adopt some program like that, while other countries would refuse. Call your representatives. Make the suggestion. Start a movement. Do something besides complain.
