Art Whipple started his "career" as a AA/FC Funny Car owner in partnership with Ed "The Ace" McCullough around 1970 in Portland, Oregon. That is a LONG time ago. I know because i finished high school in 1971 in a small Washington town across the Columbia River from east side of Portland. Lots of years of supercharged nitro racing between those two and a couple of guys familiar with the guys in Vancouver, Washington's Slo-Pokes car club. A club that required it's membership actively drag race and by that time it took a nice street rod plus a race car (at least) in partnership with another member if not alone. While not officially members those guys were a part of the rich but some what unknown history of Portland area hot rodding and a club that goes back to the earliest days of this areas hot rodding/drag racing history.

That had to sound pretty good from the shore too.

It does to me too but apparently prop variations size, number of blades and pitch determines performance and any advantage a transmission would provide is nullified by a combination of load on engine and the "slippage" that prevents an over propped boat from going faster. It's a balance of load, weight of boat, peak rpm the engine can achieve with a particular prop and also intended purpose. Is the desired performance top speed, acceleration, time to hit plane on a run from dead stop? Or ability to do so pulling skiers up out of the water? Probably a lot of trial and error. Or perhaps computers do a better job of choosing the right prop for an application?

The first marine application of whipple superchargers was in 2000 at lake cumberland marine on a 32' fountain with twin 500efi. 120+ mph with absolutely horrifying chine walk, the nose was doing calisthenics at 116mph. RIP B.K. Milloway.
