Scarlet Begonias Bob Weir Jackie Greene

Музыка

Excellent version of Scarlett Begonias. Written by Robert Hunter, R.I.P.
Musicians Jay Lane & Rob Wasserman. TRI Studios.
This is a good example of Bob Weir's 'counterpoint' guitar style that is uniquely his. Bob is a very lucky man.

With the Dead, Bobby's guitar was usually so frustratingly low in the mix. What a treat when you can hear the brilliance of his tasty rhythm guitar technique on recordings like this. Beautiful stuff from the whole band. Thanks for posting!

There was a reason it was low in the mix...because it sounded better that way, particularly when you factor in the keyboard. Bob's main contribution to The Dead was his vocal styling and personality. So many people talk about his supposedly brilliant rhythm playing, but he was merely solid. He was innovative, but not stunning. I adore The Dead, but Jerry's flights of fancy were the backbone. It all worked best TOGETHER. Burying in mix WORKED.

To my ears and memory, Bob stepped up to play guitar in a little more traditional way after Garcia passed. Nothing wrong with his playing "post Jerry" but I do miss his more innovative and Weir'd stylings of how no one else could play. I can hear it more towards the end of this song. In the Dead they each had a unique part to the mix and I'll never down play any of them.

Weir has been into these songs so long only he knows where or what he actually means. It is not reference to I IV V. I like his two note one octave melody/chording, that has to be Jerry influenced. I am guessing of course!

@@MyCleverHandle Throughout time I have used headphones and enjoyed the sound. However my first rock concert I attended was Jimi Hendrix and it was outdoors. There were other acts but Jimi closed the show of course. The first thing that really moved me was that the bass notes of bass guitars and kick drums actually thumped in my chest physically and that is the sound I always try to replicate. My desktop PC sound I have connected to the stereo input of a powered Behringer P.A. system that boasts 500 watts. I built the speaker cabinets using Eminence bass amplifier speakers and Altec horns for high frequency with crossovers and loosely packed with fiberglass. When I turn it up things will fall off shelves and windows rattle. Sorry to my neighbors but I don't play it all day and night and I do favors like snow shoveling and repairs for them so all is okay. There is an article in Univibes magazine about that Hendrix concert and I was interviewed for the article. That show was the night Noel Redding quit the group. The article also was reproduced in experience Hendrix May/June 1999. Wayback has it from my website also web.archive.org/web/20060621060635/bobwyman.com/hendrix.html

@@mullerk2 But Phil was the only one who had the foresight and shrewdness to understand what a colossal, catastrophic error it would have been to sell the vault to a corporation after Jerry passed. Phil is the keeper of the flame, the spiritual protector of the DEAD’s legacy, as it was and is, whereas I think Bobby just wants to keep playing music, keep evolving, literally until the day he drops. He doesn’t know any other way to live. Phil is more considered and dare I say ‘calculated’ where Weir is more existential, live in the moment, “what’s done is done and now it’s on to a new moment”.
