Scarlatti Sonata in B minor K.27 at 3 Tempos - FAST, MODERATE & SLOW
Музыка
⬇READ MORE BELOW⬇ In this video I play Scarlatti's Sonata K.27 three times at three different tempos, fast, moderate and slow.
I personally enjoy playing and listening to K.27 at all these three tempos equally. At a fast tempo the dynamics can be more assertive and matter of fact, at a slow tempo, light and lyrical.

The slow tempo allows the Spanish dance mood to reveal itself. Lovely.
My new favorite piano player. Paul Barton plays smooth as silk!
You are extremely talented, watching you controlling the playing is very satisfying.

I love Scarlatti. Thank you very much for your work.
Fluid like melted butter, smooth like silk, and delicious like fine chocolate.

It is the correct speed as indicated both by character and by the "Allegro", the other speeds would be presto and prestissimo respectively.

@@autismscience8534 Allegro doesnt mean "quickly" or Fast... it means JOY 🤗
Such a well produced video and such amazing playing. Beautiful dynamics too. Thanks!
You make it look so easy. Thanks for posting brilliant man.
Simplesmente maravilhoso! Obrigado, Paul.
Such a beautiful piece of music! I could listen to this all day. I hope to be able to play it myself, some day..
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE Paul!!!
Love your channel Paul. I hear pieces for the first time here, like most of the Scarlatti. It's a great music education, and everything sounds wonderful!
The slow tempo allows us to enjoy the harmonic richness of Scary, as well as the dance rhythm. Congratulations! You are a serious artist. The instrument is to be greatly commended!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

Errata: not "scary" but Scarlatti
really nice, thank you i really enjoy it (with the fast tempo)
its amazing performance. 3 different tempos are beautiful each other.
I like the fast version. It shows the beauty of the piece. The moderate and slow sound so labored!

You're right... "labored" and so boring too...!!!!!
Whatever the tempo, it’s a fabulous piece of music.
beautiful polyphony, Paul!
Beautiful music
Браво. Спасибо большое.
Very nice!!
I mean this sincerely you are one rare case. Absolutley marvelous
Impressive preparation!
LLLLLLLOVE THIS!!!!
Superb! I prefer your slow tempo. For me your slow tempo is a nice, brisk allegro and is the way I play and hear it.
Its not just the sound...the performance also is very good!
Thanks
Heyy Paul Barton! I’m shocked about your interpretation, I like it so much in your videos, mainly when you played Scarlatti! Congrats ☺️
Well done!
Thank you for this video! It's one of my favorite piano works by Scarlatti and it's interesting to hear different tempos. I tend to play it somewhere between the slow and moderate, depending on my mood that day! Great playing. :)

I agree! I really think somewhere in between a moderate and slow tempo is where it really fits for me.

Catherine Pham I sometimes play as fast as michelangeli when the mood takes me! Slightly slower Is preferable though to appreciate the harmonics
the fast tempo also reminds me of a famous french writer (Colette), often sarcastic, who (nick)named Bach "The divine sewing machine" when she didn't like the interpretations. 😊
This is a great harpsichord sonata by Scarlatti. My favourite recording is by Marcelle Meyer in 1954 in Paris. Despite the recording limitations of the time she captures the magic of this piece on the piano.
Nice Playing, Mr Paul...
Slow is a pure miracle
im literally in love with you
Bravo!
All three great, but I prefer the slow tempo. Scarlatti wrote so many great Sonata's, but this is one of the best.
Amazing performance! Congratulations! I prefer moderate tempo.
All 3 versions are beautifully played, but to my taste the slow version is the one that brings out all the richness in the harmony.
The slow version is the one I like the most
Definitely prefer the fast tempo. Just can't play it that fast. Good work once again!
I enjoyed all 3 tempos.
Very Good performance and congratulations!!!! I prefer moderate tempo. I did not like the fast!!!. I think it sounds faster then you miss all the beauty of this sonata And moderate feels much softer
Ver nice and interesting. Usually I prefer slower interpretations, but somehow here with the fast tempo the Sonata obtains such an incredible momentum und such pure, crystaline form, this goes a bit lost in the slower tempi. Also my feeling ist that the slower invites more variations in the tempo, which is not necesarilly true to this music, IMHO. The fast is my favourite, in this case! Thanks. Playing is great, and the piano seems to be an amazing, very well balanced instrument; somehow it sits exactly where I hear the piano: not to bassy. not too strident. Very very fine!
Congratulations, very beautiful rendition(s) ! You make it seem so easy to be fully convincent on 3 different tempi ! Not easy at all , a " tour de force " ! I confess I prefer the slower version...and I adopt it - I feel closer to the Gilels conception here than Michelangeli's ...besides it allows some extra miliseconds to enjoy the niceties of this lovely piece ...My teacher of clavichord and Early Music interpretation ( no other than M S Kastner ) always told us to bear in mind that the concept of speed of past centuries has nothing to do what we take for granted nowadays , namely concerning speed records ! It is easy to prove : may someone attempt the piece on a harpsichord at the tempo suggested first and then try to convince me seriously that such chaos was intended by good old Domenico !
I want to learn this sonata so badly :0 maybe I could do the slow tempo, that's usually better manageable. Thanks for the video! Absolutely love your playing

Thank you - have you tried K.59? on the face of it it's a very straight forward matter of fact sonata at a fast tempo but when it's taken very slowly it has a mysterious new life.

+Paul Barton I've looked at it but I can't really tell much from the score. It was very hard to find a recording of it as well
I prefer the slow or moderate tempo, close to Scott Ross' in his records , far more sensitive than fast tempo. Very nice rendition. The latter sounds like a 33t record tuned on 78t ... or a competitive examination for typists. Michelangeli liked that version... Many thanks from France !!
No.2 is Scarlatti, yes, thanks Paul 🤓
Maravillosa música!!!!👌👏👏👏👏👏🎶, prefiero la segunda versión el Moderato es mi favorita.
Hi Paul Barton, I am playing this song for my ATCL Piano Exam, and may you suggest the best tempo among those you played? P.S. Thanks for your video.

This is not a song! it is an instrumental composition and doesn't have words.
Excellent performances all of them. I much prefer the quicker tempo. I'm not sure about the pedalling though, I like to hear the wonderful descending melodic line and I think this can only be brought out with a more full pedal (I like Jack Gibbon's version also Michelangeli of course.

Excellent observation there (regarding the full pedal)! I totally agree! Great performance though!
i used to do musics classes but for now i dont remember how to read sheets anymore ;-; please somebody teach me this song~
As played here it may make sense to play that fast, but in this piece you're supposed to be changing your hands in the long arpeggios, so the normal/slow speed makes more sense.
Fast style reminds me Goldberg variations, so ma favourite speed
slow version is the best
And what is the mood of this song?
Wish I could see your foot on the pedals??
The time played by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli is fast and corresponds to the character of this sonata. Thank you Master Burton for all these analyses of Scarlatti sonatas

My favorite version.
Someone needs to make A synthesia version
Moderate tempo does it for me. It's perfect, in my opinion. Slow is good as well, but a bit too sluggish. Fast is way too fast.
The fast tempo is good to show off for some ladies ;)
Compare the fast one to the interpretation of Michelangeli. Interesting how different the same piece at the same speed may sound.
I’m skeptical of the fingerings you use for the intro passage. I think some of the legato is being sacrificed for playability, perhaps.
So far I notice all pianists stay with the left hand doing the crossings, ignoring the measures 13-15 indications to use right instead, is there any special reason? Is it too difficult ?
like arthuro benedetti michellangelli

laurent 3 errors in 3 words, not bad!
If you watch them from slow to fast you'd think the slow one is fast!
Well done, but piano is not an olympic discipline yet
FAST is the only way to play this piece. All others are entitle to their own opinions however wrong they may be. :)

This piece is normally allegro which corresponds to the slow tempo in this video😉
Fast is fast... but it loses so much of the harmonic I think Scarlatti intended. At the fastest tempo Michelangeli is the only master.
Ouf...
For me Slow Tempo is à quite à FAST tempo 🤪🤪🤪 i dont you tell about his FAST TEMPO .... 🤪🤪🤪
No offence but I always thought Paul Barton was young since his fingers are so flexible
Slow is better.
