GW was a Virginian, so the CSA would have definitely been loving on him. But the portrait looks like it was printed with a dot matrix printer. On the $20, it's interesting to see the staining and color change on the signatures due to the iron gall ink that was the norm before fountain pens came along in the 1880s.

I've seen the $20 with the ship on it before, but never the $50 with Washington. Also, I've never seen one in quite that nice a condition before either. They're quite neat. Thanks for sharing them with us!

Way back then, they'd pay you $50 in real money if you bring that promissory note to a real bank. Trying to imagine how much silver that would be. I'm guessing it's nearly 50 troy ounces. It's funny how almost every found souvenir from the Civil War era starts out Confederate if possible because it's worth so much more money. These notes are one of the few items that don't have that problem.

The lithographers at Hoyer & Ludwig, like many others in the South, had no experience at producing currency. Hoyer & Ludwig printed calendars before the war; this explains why their early notes like T-8 & T-9 are so crude by currency standards.

I always find it jarring when I see Confederate notes with George Washington... you literally mentioned it just as I was writing that sentence! You're good, man... 😂

PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE THAT GEORGE WASHINGTON HAS ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN IN VIRGINIA ( AS WELL AS ALL OF THE SOUTHERN STATES) AS " THE FATHER OF THE SOUTH ". SO IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE THAT GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD BE ON CONFEDERATE CURRENCY.

So Ben - first super super cool .. where would you look for “the rub” on that 58 EPQ. I don’t see a hint of wear but grading notes are my weak spot for sure

The top and bottom margins are a little uneven. If you watch closely, there's part of the bottom edge of the adjoining note at the top margin. Slight discoloration around the signatures (although common as Ben says). What we don't know is whether the grader could feel or observe the raised surfaces on the printed design elements. I guessing not. Minor things, I know, but they help distinguish the quality to the grader.
