SCAPULAR STABILITY

You’ve heard me talk in many previous videos about foundational movements of the scapula, namely the upward rotation and posterior tilt required for overhead work. The scapulothoracic muscles must fire correctly to provide optimal control of the humerus and to maintain an optimal relationship of the glenoid and the humeral head. Of course, this should happen unconsciously, but when these movements are perturbed following injury, it is actually quite helpful to bring conscious awareness to these movement. We need these muscles to activate to a sufficient level to contribute to movement and working them in isolation, with focus and attention, helps achieve this. It also strengthens the connections to form the elements of a particular movement, in this case, overhead work.
