Spider wood slime and melting plants, that was a really great experience for you to share! I just set up a cube tank (MJ inspired!) and had that happen but didn’t really put the two together, thanks for your humble presentations and not hiding your findings! Always interesting..

I couldnt even get a free dog food sample recently - you get a whole tank and stand! Looks amazing. Crazy how technological aquariums have become - i remember the days of going and buying a tube light, and when a plug timer was an amazing invention that turned the lights on and off at set times!

My main aquarium has increasingly looked like a life support system in a hospital, cable after cable, I keep thinking there must be a simpler way to effectively keep plants healthy, the fish are the easy bit!

Looking amazing! Love the cichlids as well. I wasn't expecting actual bugs in the tank, though. 😂 As far as my Dennerle 55l goes: I've had it cycling for weeks now, removed some white fluffy stuff from the wood and added some plants. Some algae here and there, but most plants are growing (Crypt. wendtii "green" seems to have some issues). I am seriously considering RO-water though, since the hardness of my tapwater may be a bit too much. Looking forward to the development of this tank and the other two you got recently! 😎

Maybe I am weird but I loved the little 'seed' crustaceans (new to me, despite over 50 years in the hobby) and your new cichlids, lets hope the latter breed and for a few weeks 'terrorise' all the other fish as dutiful parents, small cichlids breeding in a community tank are like sticklebacks from childhood, simply fascinating, but sadly cichlid males don't built an intricately woven tunnel/little nest. The plant melting is disappointing, the ammonia spike is power for the course with that type of substrate. Cool light but the programming would slowly drive me drink - though for a bedroom sunrise and sunset would be nice - though of course in the tropics the dawn and dusk is much much quicker. Thanks Mark as always, really like this setup and the fish.

I feel like rasbora in my experience have been the best at eating things like detritus and copapods/seed shrimp. I had an explosion of detritus worms and added some juvenile rasbora, they were mostly gone within a day or two except for the ones they remained in the substrate which is good.

Hey Mark, fantastic looking aquarium. I'm kind of trying to follow your advice at my first attempt at aquascaping. 75 gallons. I don't have any funds, and I'm following the Father Fish method which is to try and make it as natural as possible, so soil, topped with 3" of sand, lots of plants and no really no water changes. I don't have very many plants yet, just some java ferns I attached to the wood and monte carlo in the front. I plan on adding a variety of stem plants in the back. I just put in some white cloud minnows because the plants need the nitrates from the fish to grow well. I seeded old filter media so the beneficial bacteria is already in the aquarium. I had one zebra danio fish fry after rehoming all the parents, they had laid one egg in my shrimp tank the 2 days they were in there, so I put that in with the white cloud minnows and it's the first time it's ever been with other fish. Sorry I'm really longwinded. All this to say, I'm trying to blend your incredible artistic style with my own design (limited by no money) with Father Fish's method of a really natural ecosystem. I made a short video (really bad at videos and have bronchitis so my voice is bad too, sorry in advanced), and if you find a few moments I'd love your input on the layout of my hardscape. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mI6as5enp8m4fpM.html. It's a work in progress. I have had water in the tank for about 5 days now, so really not a mature tank yet.

I said that you should have heat soaked the wood. You tank is looking nice now but that slime mould probably could been avoided. All you need to do to avoid slime mould and tannings on wood is pre-soak it in a hot bath. I did this for all the dragon wood in my 90cm tank and previously for other bog wood scapes. I just weighed the wood down and poured the hottest water I could get from the tap over the wood until the water level was above the wood and left it to soak for a day. Every couple of hours or so I would drain the old water and refill with clean, piping hot water until the tannings were gone. This method not only removes tannings which would otherwise take much longer in the cooler aquarium water but it also conditions the wood by removing dirt and unseen bacteria which might cause other issues during the set up phase in a new tank. If you can make the hardscape's effect on the water parameters and plants as neutral as possible it can only be a good thing especially during the start up cycling phase. Three weeks in and my 90cm dragon wood, Tropica soil set up is looking good. Dwarf hairgrass carpet looking green and lush no melts so far and no tannings. Just had a diatom couple of days but after scrubbing the wood and rock with a wire brush it doesn't seem to have come back. So far so good and very little drama. So glad I heat soaked the wood.
