Withings just organised a live online Q&A session, in which the product managers answered questions of the people that were part of the early release program. In this video I will summarize the information they provided to the best of my abilities.
My name is Rob and I am a Postdoctoral researcher based in Vienna. Normally on this channel I talk about science, self-tracking and part of I test the accuracy of different smart-trackers, like the Scanwatch but also Fitbits and the Oura ring. This video is a bit different, and I’ll share the latest info on the Scanwatch, since I found this information quite useful.
In my normal video’s I scientifically test the accuracy of different devices. I am actually working on an analysis on the step counter of the scanwatch and the readiness scores and HRV score of the Oura Ring.
I hope you enjoyed this video, though it is slightly different than the ones I normally make.
Thanks for watching, and see you in the next video!

Your videos are good. It is clear you are a genuine scientist and understand data analysis. This video is now over 1 month old. 2 sets of questions--the 2nd set is the most important. A) Is the Scanwatch now available in the US? If not, do you know the ETA? Is FDA approval needed or just good advertising? B) My wife does have known Afib and sleep apnea issues. So "real-time" detection of Afib incidents is important to us. Perhaps every 10 minutes detection is enough given such incidents normally last longer. Tracking periods of sleep apnea are also important. Other watch functions like email notices and news flashes and step tracking are less important to us. So the question is: With health monitoring the main need, what do you recommend between the watch options? These are Scanwatch, Sense, and Apple 4 or later? We can wait a month or two if something significantly better will only be available then--for example the Scanwatch in the US.

Love your presentations. I am really attracted to this form factor for a watch but what comes up for me is why are these makers still only using the green light for scanning when the combination with the red-infra red light has proven much more accurate, notably with ECG? I have seen this readily available and inexpensive in the Spovan Blade and the V19 smaller watches.

Hi there! I ended up buying a wirhings scanwatch based on your reviews and I'm impressed. Only thing I've noticed it that the step count is only a third of that I reach on garmin or fitbit. I think fitbit overestimate but if the 3, garmin seems to me the most accurate with steps and also stairs. I'll go upstairs 12-15 times a day yet scanwatch only ever detects up to 8 times, max. With the health mate app I don't have the bit you show on your videos that says apenic episodes, only breathing disturbances with a graph that has no context other than few, moderate or severe disturbances but not the apenic episodes that yours shows. I've only worn mine for 4 days though so does that feature unlock after a week or more? I enjoy your videos, thanks for the in depth reviews and great content!

Hallo, thanks for your videos. They are really pushed in terms of comparison and science and I really love that. I have some questions regarding the watch. Can you help? Thanks I am really interested in buying but I have 2 blocking points that are important : 1. The heart rate is wrong several times when you are exercising. The watch detects half the heart-rate and it is a problem for a lot of people as I see. So, just to have a number, let's put it at 30% wrong in the heart-rate. 2. The sleep detection is 25% wrong in your test. My questions are: 3. Did the Withings crew mention and of these points (1&2) in the Q&A? 4. Do I need to wear the watch very close strapped on my wrist (like it does not move at all) during normal wear and also exercise? (I like to wear watches a little less tight, if not, I will sweat on my wrist and it's not a nice feeling) 5. For me the heart rate and sleep detecting are important factors. Do you recommend buying the watch knowing that the heart rate and sleep detection are not even close to 90% accuracy? 6. When you exercised, did you use auto-detection or set it yourself in exercise mode? 7. What is your oppinion, could they really improve these 2 issues with just a software update? Danke schön!

@@TheQuantifiedScientist I realize this is not that easy, but maybe in the future in the same way you compare sleep tracking against medical tests, you could compare calories burned against metabolic gas analysis. Any device, not just the scanwatch. The info would be incredible, because we would be able to tell which tracker is best tracking sleep, Wich best at calorie tracking and maybe a best overall.

Hi everyone I posted earlier about how wonderfully accurate this watch has been for me personally, then today it went mental - heart rate all over the place. I have discovered something interesting if you hold the button in for seconds and you will get the firmware version. Press it a few more times until you reach factory reset. Then scroll and you will find Cache. If you clear the cache, (do not factory reset) the heart rate accuracy returns to being perfect. Mine was reading too low then too high, measured 110 while sitting. clearing the cache totally fixes the issues. I can only assume this is a software glitch which results in erroneous data building up in the watch and messing with results. Very interesting, this would go to say the hardware records perfectly but the software has glitches in. Maybe the Scientist on this thing can try it himself and see if he gets the same results as I have. This would mean this is a problem that 100% can be fixed with a software update. I recon this watch was rushed to launch under covid conditions, the french were not working and the watches software has some way to go before it catches up with the hardware on offer.

Agreed too. It's crazy to me that they are pulling an Apple and saying 'we won't let users have the option for continuous heart rate because it's not what the company wants'. People are interested in these devices because of the health features, just make 10m scans the default and continuous an option.

nice work !!, great to find a you-tube scientific angle on these "health wearables", i have been using the withings cardio scale and bp cuff for yrs and am quite impressed with the hardware and app, but i need more from my "smartwatch" in terms of "smarts", ie., notifications, telephone call acceptance and ability to respond on my wrist-very useful and important for me, as i am a solo practitioner physician in the field, (medical home visits). so i've been back and forth with the samsung active 2-takes calls on wrist, and fitbit ionic-does NOT take calls on wrist, the last 2 yrs and integration with the health mate app for the scale/bp cuff, but trying to have one all-inclusive hardware/software product, (prob asking too much at this time with competition as it is!, and i'm invested in android/google so apple watch is out for now). have you/will you review the fitbit sense/samsung watch-3, and upcoming oppo watch ?, and lastly what would be your rec for an all-inclusive hardware/software health/fitness-smart wearable ??, dan in michigan-usa

Hi Dan! Thanks for sharing your story! So, I have the Withings Cardo and Withings BP too, and they seem to work quite well :-D . I do plan to review the Fitbit Sense, very excited to see it. I might test the Samsung Watch 3 too, but I need to see if my budget allows buying multiple products. For now, I must say I am a fan of my Fitbit Charge 4, since it has a good price-feature ratio and tracks sleep quite well ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/gI2G05aamLOwYsY.html ). But of course the new FitBit Sense seems to beat it if we look at the features. I need to check though how limited the data is when you have FitBit premium vs when you don't have premium, because that could be a turnoff for any people. I must also admit that I use fewer of the Smart-features than you do (e.g. text on the watch just distract me from work), so I don't really use those. For me the tracking is most important. Once I have tested the FitBit sense I will be able to say more, so stay tuned.

Could anyone please recommend me a good consumer device with continuous heart rate measurement that one can easily see all the time (on the wrist or on the smartphone)? I'm interested in using this as a biofeedback to detect changes at the very onset. 100% accuracy is not that important, it's not for weight lifting or other sports which may impact the accuracy, and I'm interested in real-time trends more than in precise numbers. I found no watch is accurate enough for running. Garmin Forerunner and VivoSport, as well as Fitbit had the same problem as Withings Steel HR for me. Chest strap is the gold standard (and even that can have frequency halving in winter, if your skin is too dry).

Weer dankje wel voor je input, Je doet het echt goed! Stel even vraag in engels. This is my first comment on one of your video's and I came across by sleeptracking. I am now tracking that with whoop because that is one of the functions. But I was currious how accurate this is, do you know a little bit about that? Groetjes vanuit Nederland

Hi Chris! Heel erg bedankt voor je compliment! I recently read a scientific paper about the Whoop strap, and I am planning to make a video about it. Unfortunately, the authors would not share the data with me, which is surprising to me, since we are more and more entering the world of "open science". All I can say is that my first instinct is that the Whoop strap is about as good as the Oura ring, based on that paper. But I will have to do some analyses to know more. Stay tuned! Hi! I guess a lot of pulse oximeters that measure spo2 through the finger instead of through reflection are more reliable. This technology is probably better developed at this point, so i would trust it better in general. But this is very much a gut feeling, i would have to search through literature to make sure. Have a great day!!

Hi Justin! I have seen no other updates. They said they are "working on it", but I suspect that it will take a few months at least, based on the fact that they started a new initiative to improve it across all their devices. But, this is just an educated guess, and I am happy to be corrected by someone with newer intel ;-)

@@TheQuantifiedScientist I contacted Withings regarding REM sleep. This is what they replied after all: "I can confirm to you that the ScanWatch is not yet capable to track your REM sleep data. However, sleep apnea detection will be added this coming quarter 1 of 2021 so it is possible that it will also be added as a feature at that time."

What does he mean by "predict REM-sleep" Why would you predict something like REM sleep, or why would a watch predict anything? Maybe predict a heart attack could be possible, in a few years.

I wish it had better sports features, nothing fancy but no withings watches contain a lap timer/interval timer which is super annoying. Also the screen should show a second hand as a widget (I’m a paramedic and need a second hand for work)

Hi, wondering if you could help a chap out. I have many health issues, Pass out climbing stairs etc, So the NHS units are all busted. Im needing to track everything, I wasn't aware of this scan watch and just bought the move ECG last week, Also went with the blood pressure, I am missing body temperature, Also i wear the Honor 5 band, which is the most accurate with sleep and more importantly naps, But i'm also in the need of GPS and fall monitor , Say i fall and no movement within x amount of seconds or minutes etc, it would auto send SOS , Id be able to go out, Well after this lockdown, As im buying all sorts of bands trying to find the right unit.. So i was kinda wondering if there's a watch or a band out there that can medically do it all in one that you could recommend., . I find the sleep pattern is way way off on this withings. Is there anything you or maybe your members could point me towards i'd be really appreciated . Cheers Mark G.

Hi Mark, thanks for your message! Sorry to hear about your problems, hope it gets better soon. Let me start off by saying I am not a medical professional, so my comments are just based on my own experience as a user of devices. I am not sure if there is an "all-in-one" device for what you want. The Fitbit Sense that is coming out soon has: sleep monitoring, temperature deviations (at night), SpO2 (at night), ECG (starting this October/Nov), and even EDA (user activated) for stress measurements. In my experience Fitbits are quite good at sleep tracking. Now, fall detection seems quite vital, and I could imagine having a dedicated device, I it is think part of the Apple Watch, though I am not 100% sure. The new Apple Watch was just announced and will have ECG, SpO2 and dedicated sleep tracking, though I still have to study the details. Hope this helps! Cheers, Rob

I am indeed not a native English speaker, but I expect most people understand what I am saying despite this "limitation". @@TheQuantifiedScientist I'm a native speaker and I genuinely thought that your English and pronunciation was great. In fact, when you mentioned at the start that you're from Austria, I though to myself, "wow this guy speaks great English even though it's not his first language." And then I came down to the comments and saw this. I would suggest not having background music in your videos, because your videos are speech heavy (as they should be) that the music just interferes and makes it more difficult to hear what you're saying. I also want to say: keep smiling! It seems like a conscious thing that you do, and it's noticeable and commendable.
