First thing i want to say is the guy who making this video , everything in the video is true and you have to be in vietnam like 2 year to know the beige uniform officer is f*cking useless so this video is REALLY helpful to you guys out there planning to come my country . Second thing is ONLY ask stranger when you are being lost , maybe luck on your side that stranger speak broken but understandable enough english to help you . And last thing is about protect your personal item like wallet and phone , get a fanny pack with you when you come here , it really help you in vietnam than your insurance company contracts . And my suggestion to you guys since there some of you want being fun while traveling but still able to protect yourself : - 1 Fanny pack ( must have if you like to go down alone to beer street ( - 1 4G sim card ( to make sure your gps work when needed ) - learn a little basic vietnamese ( to disguise you guys as foreigner living in vietnam for long time already and is help you away from ppl about scam you ) - split your money 50-50 one in your backpack and leave it at hotel since ur fanny pack help you only 70%-80% And a reminder in case you got big problem : 113 for police department , 114 for fire department and 115 for hospital department GLHF in Vietnam

As a Vietnamese, I felt like being scammed all the time when I came back to Vietnam. Last night when I ate a meal in Vinh city, which is goi Vit, they took like double the price of it. The local police in Vietnam do not work at all, they don't know how to manage or control the price, and also no serious punishments for those scammers. That's why our tourism is still not really develop as other countries, such as our neighbor-Thailand. Be careful, to ask the price before you eat anything in Vietnam. Why my country is like thisssss

Do your own research and go with an open mind. We spent x4 weeks travelling from North to South in March-April 2019 and it is our first trip ever to Vietnam and never had any problems. They are the most friendliest people and are so polite. The only rude people we came across are foreign tourists themselves who thinks they are above everyone else. Show respect to the local people and their culture and they will look after you with kindness. There are good and bad in every country. I highly recommend visiting Vietnam and we are going again.

Same thing for me after four consecutive trips in the north Vietnam (and also two times in the middle of the country). The only problem, often even painful, was, for me too, the presence and the behavior of western tourists (American, Australian, Belgian, etc.), vulgar, messy, noisy, in bad taste. These tourists had brought with them their revolting culture of primary consumption and so ordinary, or very often their culture of hippies, walking barefoot while believing to understand Asia (!), While the Vietnamese, contrary, when they go out at night have a concern to be dress nicely. These tourists made me ashamed. The Vietnamese are often dignified and very human. Very moving too.

Traveling in a completely different atmosphere is different from traveling in home, as a foreigner one cannot read, analyse every review on the net to remain cautious. Don't be worried. Vietnam is a great country for tourists. You just gotta be a little cautious that's all. The video serves as a guide to help you avoid getting scammed, however if you possess even a little street smarts, it's very unlikely to happen to you, especially now that you've seen the video 😁 Enjoy your trip to Vietnam!

This is a great video and much appreciated. Some people here in the comments who try to downplay these scams don't seem to appreciate that being in a foreign country can be confusing in many ways. It's not a matter of common sense. Most of these scams don't even exist in Australia or America ect so most wouldn't see these scams coming. I do know some of these scams are similar to ones in China. I really appreciate your video because I have married a lovely Vietnamese woman in Australia and am going to travel to Vietnam at some point in the future. I suspect even my wife may not be familiar with many of these scams, as she is from country Vietnam. Thanks again!

how can you boast the relevance of these warnings if you tell us you have never been to Vietnam? That said, I personally do not question the content of this video, if not all the same its presentation of the facts excessively dramatic and one-sided, so with a certain bias of interpretation that we must put into perspective. I'm just saying that tourists are often part of the problem. There is also the fact that all the poor populations of the whole world inevitably develop in some way or other types of scams to survive, because quite simply they know that nothing will happen for them in this context.

Do it the easy way. To get a taxi, look for those 2 reliable names and go directly to the available taxi. Go to supermarket, 7-eleven, etc with price posted on the items. No bargaining there. Price is higher there but everyone pays the same price. Go directly is the key. Don’t do anything with people approaching you.

I did however manage to barter a vendor in BT market down from 1.5million vnd for a chess set to 200k before I decided the peices looked a little bit ugly and left it. In 2010, I traveled from Taiwan to Vietnam. Upon arriving at Hochiming airport, I registered in a desk in arrival hall to get a taxi to downtown and they charged me 10 USA and got me a taxi. After leaving the airport about 5 minutes, the driver asked me extra 15 USA and said 'parking! parking ' . I told him I'd already paid the fare to his company and why did he charge extra money? He just kept extorting me and saying ' parking'. I couldn't but offer him extra 5 USD. He looked reluctant but took the money anyway.

Good Advice for travelling anywhere in southeast Asia. I was pick pocketed twice in Angeles in the Philippines, and I think that's a much bigger problem in the Philippines than in Vietnam. I've been to Thailand and Vietnam many times and never had a problem in either of those countries. However, about Vietnam I will say that it is a VERY beautiful country full of many wonderful people. There are some lowlifes and criminals in every country. When in Vietnam I have almost always traveled with someone I know who lives there, since I don't speak Vietnamese, and I recommend travelling with a local whenever possible. They will show you good places to go, make sure you aren't overcharged for anything, and protect you from scams. Altho I do feel most comfortable in Thailand, Vietnam is much less expensive, and is very beautiful, and is very worth visiting. Take reasonable precautions, use common sense, follow the advice in this video, and you will be fine.

Probably, you were walking alone, drunk after having a good time with girls, when you were victimized. If that is the case, you get no sympathy from most people. Remember, most people in Angeles speak English. Unlike VietNam where scammers will not speak English even if they understand it well, just to put undue pressre on the victim.

I'm sure you guys can find a lot of volunteers willing to help you travel around Hanoi or any big cities in Vietnam for free. There're many English (and also different languages) learners want to show their hospitality, and of course, have a chance to improve their communication skills. All you need is taking some time to search on the internet for a facebook group/a language club, etc... and an open - minded attitude. They're young, lovely and enthusiastic. Anyway, don't hesitate to ask for help when encountering a scam, just saying out loud or acting strong. My recommendation is learning some Vietnamese for emergency like "lừa đảo!" or "cứu với". It's short and easy to remember, and it can save your money (and also your impression about my country). Hope your guys have a wonderful time in Vietnam

I got robbed in Vietnam more often than in any other country I've visited in the last 20 years. One guy on a motorbike pulled the wallet right out of my pocket and kept driving. Everybody saw but nobody helped me as I ran after him through traffic for 50meters or so. Another thief got my passport. Third got my nice headphones on the bus. Overcharged countless times, that's just normal everyday occurrence over there. Also, ALL three of my Vietnamese landlords withheld part of the rent deposit for madeup fake reasons. In 20 years of renting, I've never had a deposit withheld before.

Before I went, my nephew in Saigon told me not to go, because I will be scammed everywhere I go. I smiled and put out 100-200 USD for to be scammed. At the end, I was very happy because I knew and allowed and told them that I knew them scam me, always with loving smile on my face. I lost less than $ 50. and very happy at the end of my trip. Learn a few basic phrases of Vietnamese, carry your valuables in a fanny pack (but wear it in FRONT), and when possible, walk with others. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. As dorky as it looks, some people, including me, wear a backpack IN FRONT, with your arms around it. I never once had anyone try to steal anything. As anywhere else, just be cautious, and aware of your surroundings at all times.

The only "scam" other than overpricing for tourists in tourist areas was when I was approached by the equivalent of an "Uber" driver (Grab) at the airport who offered to take me to my hotel at about 5x the proper rate .. Knowing what it should cost - I laughed in his face and took a metered cab .. It cost maybe 20k more than I would have paid with an "Uber" - but the price was fair and on the meter .. I have never been "scammed" (overcharged maybe - but that is true in any tourist area in any country in the world) in Vietnam and have nothing but love for the country .. I go there once a year.

I lived in Ho Chi Minh and went to Hanoi many times for three years. The misconception is that pickpocketing and outright street burglary happens mostly to tourists. I did not know a single vietnamese who had not been robbed. But no matter what you say here tourists will be naive and oblivious. I was walking down a Main Street in Ho Chi Minh one day on a wide sidewalk. I was looking down when all of a sudden a guy on a motorcycle driving on the frigging sidewalk towards me reached to grab my gold necklace. He missed but my necklace broke. He’d been alerted to me by a friend at the corner I’d passed. They work in gangs. Here’s the rule: NEVER walk down the street looking at or carrying your cell phone. The gangs have lookouts everywhere and a guy on a motorcycle will drive by and grab it like nothing. Same goes for a laptop or camera. Anytime I needed to take my laptop somewhere I walked with both arms around it. You think slinging a camera over you shoulder with a strap would be secure? I knew one lady who got badly cut when the thief drove by used a large knife to slice the strap and cut her in the process. NEVER carry any more id cards or bank cards than necessary. ALWAYS leave ALL jewelry in your hotel safe. I’ve lived in SE Asia for 30+ years. I love vietnam but trust me, it’s the most unsafe country in the region bar none when it comes to street crime. Please take precautions! Don’t be carefree and naive.

Be careful now, some people might get butthurt at the fact that what you say doesn't align wit their rose colored view of Vietnam even if it's reality and true. There's tonnes of videos that capture these motorbike robberies happening in broad daylight on youtube yet people will still deny it and call you a liar or say that this happens everywhere in the world.

A lot of Westerners might worry about some of these scams but think it's normal to pay £/$/€10 for a drink in a club at home, like that's not a huge scam.

I think Japan is the safest country in Asia. But even Japan has some nasty scammers from Nigeria. They work mainly in front of clubs and bars.

I’ve travelled twice to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam with friends. Food was good and cheap. Tourist spots are relatively near. Language was a bit of a problem but manageable. Unfortunately got taxi scammed when we left a museum to go back to the hotel. Taxi driver dropped us off on the other side of the street across our hotel saying something in Vietnamese which we couldn’t understand. My friend paid but the driver was saying something in Vietnamese. My friend thought he was giving a wrong bill so he pulled -out other bills which the driver grabbed and returned the rest. My friend only realized after that he lost a big amount. We used Grab the next time and way better.

What he means is Sai Gon. Everything you can expect from big cities with tourists. Btw the same people will scam the locals too. Just that the locals will give the scammers hell and pick pockets or robbers will face street justice from the locals in their area. Most common are the people who act as “middle men”, recommending goods or services, but take a big fee from the service provider. If service is good you might accept the high price but usually it is an exorbitant rip off with bad service. The good providers of goods and services are well known. Check the reviews of local places and providers or take the time to walk, looking for a shop on the street. Usually the busy shop with locals might be the better choice.

Very good info. All true. I was scammed at 17 with that card setup game, so this video hits it right on the money. We will retire to Phuket Island but 40 years in Asia prepared me for what you listed. For the newbies.... watch out!

Most are true, even my Vietnamese friend gold necklace was snatched in District 3. Dont wear gold chain or jewellery. Also I had always been warned many times by good vietnamese strangers to be careful of my phone while videoing.

Sorry to hear that happened to your friend... in fact when i was night market shopping around Ben Thanh market the friendly vendor actually warned me to pull up my collars so as to cover my gold chain... so those snatch thieves couldn't see it... very nice of her. Got to be careful not to show off all these valuable stuff

The police (Công An) in Vietnam and robbers collude together, they would let thugs robbed you and split the profit between them. So either you have to be extra careful or don't go to Vietnam at all!
