Scammers are targeting record collectors - here's what to watch for

Ойын-сауық

I am noticing a lot more social media scams targeting record collectors. A new one tricks people into thinking they are buying vinyl from a record store going out of business. Let's dive into this one...

Several of these scams show exactly the same records for sale. I knew I had seen one of those record shop photos before - the one in Pittsburgh - I do like looking at overseas record stores - not always to buy, but a lot of the time just to drool over some of the stuff they have in stock! Glad you got this video out, Frank. More people need to know about these scum. As you so rightly said, some new collectors might fall for this sort of flummery, and be out of pocket, and perhaps put off collecting completely. If something looks too good to be true, then it most definitely will be. Thank you.

Very informative video Frank. Unfortunately in this day and age there are scammers everywhere who obviously only have one desire in life which is to scam people and fool people into parting with their money. When you consider a lot of vinyl can be quite pricey these days I think I would be a bit wary seeing a website selling vinyl like DSOTM for a ridiculously low price and just the very fact that the site you explored said he sold 78 of that same album would definitely set alarm bells ringing for me. I really don't like scammers. Sometimes we have to remember the old saying, if something sounds too good to be true it usually is.

Regardless of what you’re buying, anyone shopping online, should only be shopping from reputable sources. In this case, well established record stores with an online presence would be good. Amazon is good it has you backed up discogs, and major distributors are pretty safe bet. Come on people. They’re making so much vinyl that they can’t even keep up with it. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in a safe place then go buy a different record you want from someplace that is safe. ❤

I will not phone with any scammers it’s terrible what they’re doing they should not be allowed to do that to scam people especially for people like me who love collecting vinyl records.

Scammers suck. On the flip side, several years ago a local chain closed, and they kept lowering prices all spring and summer until they closed the final two remaining locations, at which time what was left *was* down about 90% from original price. I spent about 2K at those two stores that year, but I got about $10,000 worth of LPs, Singles, CDs, and box sets. A once in a lifetime opportunity.

For some people it may be the only thing in their lives that isnt going wrong,so there is a special place in hell for these asswipes. These remind me of the lame ass ads on KZread ( YES YOU KZread!!!!!) advertising a 2500 dollar e- bike for 39.99. How is it that Facebook and KZread can inspect and shutdown certain folks for having opinions, but they can't police their sites for crooks? They would sell new sealed records for $10-20CDN but not pay the labels. It was great! I remember one Toronto show they were selling Use your Illusion for $5.

I bought so much vinyl back in the 70's and 80's (and still have them), not much I need now. However, to increase my lacking and scarce "Homer and Jethro" collection, I've bought a few of their old original, never reissued LPs from sellers on Discogs, for relatively cheap prices (not much demand for Homer and Jethro these days apparently). Haven't had any issues, yet anyway. One still sealed album had some mold, but a cleaning fixed the issue, and I paid less than $5 for the actual album, there was a couple dollars shipping on top though.

Yes, I’m aware of all the scams in phony ass all over the place but sometimes you really can’t find a good deal or even a Great One. A friend of mine bought an original first pressing of Elvis Presley‘s first album for $10 in mint, absolutely mint condition. Sometimes people just don’t know what they have.😊

One thing that stood out for me apart from the pricing was when you pulled down the currency converter on their website, and after the major world currencies they listed Afghanistan! How many customers would a record store have from Afghanistan, and would Afghanis even be allowed to order records from the West?

I am a seasoned record collector and at 58 years old and having been collecting for over 40 years, I like to think I can spot when something sounds to good to be true, because usually it is. But you still have to be careful and if you are not sure do some research before you part with your money, because these scammers will try all the tricks in the book to reel people in with their unbelievably good deals.

@brian3174 Hi, the Beatles first pressings could be worth some money , depending on the titles and condition. The Sgt Pepper pic disc sounds like a limited edition 50th anniversary pressing from 2017 and as for the rest of the collection you can check catalogue numbers on one of the databases online and i think Discogs has a catalogue database where you can check out old vinyl catalogue numbers to get some idea of value, or can take them to a local record store and they maybe able to give you some information. Hope this helps you out. Kind regards Sean.

I started collecting records when I was 12 years old. I still have most of the early purchases. There was a thrift shop across from the school, so I started buying records with my lunch money. Mom soon put a stop to that by packing lunch for me. My I'm still collecting. My collection has save a corner of the apartment for me. I was 12 years old in 1973..

Sorry to hear that, I guess we have a fair chance of spotting a scam of it's about something you're familiar with. But if you're not an expert in lawnmowers or whatever random thing you need to buy, you are more vulnerable - I guess that's what the scammers prey on! We know that a Guns' box set for 5.99 is too good to be true but not everybody knows anything about 80s/90s rock and metal or the price of physical media and I suppose that's how they get their dough

Anybody that thinks Slayer, Metallica, The Clash, etc etc would ever be 90% is a fool. Even if there really was a store going out of business they would just sell their stock to a distributor and get more than these prices. Scammers suck but anyone that falls for this or the obvious Reverb scams, etc has some major problems of their own.

If a bricks and mortar shop closes they don't sell of all their stock at a massive discount, as used to happen. It all goes online and people resell it. Small shops and yard sales are where you can grab a bargain, pople aren't giving stuff away, especially on Facebook.

I hope people aren’t gullible enough to fall for these ridiculously prices, but at least they won’t be out a lot of money, unless they order multiple sets. 😬 I have noticed on fan facebook pages that people will post offers for vinyl, despite disclaimers that such posts aren’t permitted. You also see add in the facebook feed for bogus offers like $50 for Beatles and Stones box sets. I always comment “scam” and report them to facebook.
