If you were getting scammed on vintage cards like that, I would pull out every hollow and rare and check to see if the back is glossy or if it has texture on the card. I’ve picked up cards before that look good from a photo, but when you examine it in person, it’s fake

Unfortunately I have seen a lot of fakes! Some of them are very convincing. The old rares here seem legit-most of them are $5 or $6 cards… I’d honestly be nervous to try and pick up one of the really expensive ones with how many fakes are floating around.

If it weren't for the swapping cards in/out I'd be inclined to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. I think there are plenty of people out there that don't have any clue which are fake or which are legit & just buy bulk, repackage, and try to make a buck. It's the card swapping that is a dead give away.

When I met him the second time and he had a big stack of fake cards I asked him where he got them and he said local card shops 🙄 I don’t believe that at all. In this part of the US there are way too many scammers. I know people who recently had very expensive collections stolen and I also saw a guys who paid a lot for a “first edition charizard” that did look really good but it was off. I suggest having someone help you check stuff out if it’s a large purchase! Luckily for me the $30 bucks or so that I’m out isn’t a big deal. I was scammed for $700 before and that one hurt 😬

Unrelated question but I thought I'd ask because you probably know. I have my small vintage collection (Fossil up to EX Deoxys) but haven't collected since, and I'd love to get some new ones. Where online would be good to buy really cheap holos or other cards I like the look of, just to enjoy the art, that doesn't go crazy on shipping and has a large selection? Japanese would be even better as I like the holo/silver borders. I've seen on pricing sites that SO MANY really nice looking cards are even as low as 3-20 cents, and I'd love to just fill sleeves or a binder with them to look at. TCGPlayer when I tried searching basically has cards from so many different stores and you have to hit a minimum spend on each of them for the shipping to not wildly stack up, which is really hard to manage when you're buying so many singles that no one store on them seems to have even a majority of in stock. Thanks~

Great question! When I got back into the hobby it took several months for me to really understand the market. My best advice for you is to buy stuff that’s cheap and fun and not go too crazy until you get a better feel for it. I don’t normally buy cheap singles, but what you said is spot on, every price that you see does not include “gas fees” or shipping/handling etc. so they are not as cheap as they seem. Something I enjoy is looking on marketplace for someone selling a whole collection or bulk lot. You can find a lot of gems in those and it sounds like it might be what you’re looking for. That’s the cheapest way to buy commons/uncommons, as long as it’s a fair price. I also have really been enjoying Korean cards. You can get booster boxes off eBay for $30-40 and it’s a lot of fun for the money. In the current era, scarlet violet, I believe the best set is 151. It’s dipped in price recently and you should be able to pick it up and have a fun experience without breaking the bank. Great set to try and complete!

Yeah I meant to. He’s in Vancouver WA and went by James. I bought off OfferUp. However, there are so many scammers right now that I think it makes more sense to learn what to look for and in my case just slow down and be more thorough. Like, avoiding this one guy won’t really help any of my viewers (odds of meeting him) but learning about scams could help people avoid them? Make sense?

As without enough ramifications made clear, the trappings of the scammer will be laid for other victims to manage. I'd wager, you weren't the first to get screwed over and won't be the last. He's got the rest of that stack to scam through and make his petty cash. My thoughts below are nothing on you, as you got your world you gotta keep safe. Being wise not to instigate is important. But putting myself in your shoes, and thinking how I might have handled it, falls into two categories. One where I return as you did, but laying out plainly that if his stack of fakes weren't thrown away in front of you. Then a public listing would be made on the platform you both connected through that make clear his dealings. The other thought, was I would not have have returned after getting scammed, and just made a listing stating his dealings in more vague terms that let people know what cards are being faked. And the current scam being played out. I'd personally choose the latter. That said, your approach was pretty solid. I just don't see him stopping till that stack is sold off. And along the way Id imagine he eventually meets a customer less kind than yourself.

Or should I have punched him? I pack more than poke-balls, but I also have a family with three kids. Don’t think the police would care about fake cards, but if I beat a guy up they might care. Also, if weapons got involved it could be life changing and for what? $100? I did confront him. I did take a card from him. I did tell him he’s lucky that I wouldn’t do those other things.
