Scale Model Tips - 36 Spray Can Primers Tested - Tamiya - Mr. Surfacer - Citadel - Rust-Oleum & More
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Here I test 36 different spray can primers for scale modeling. Included in this test are non scale model brands like Dupli-Color, Krylon and Rust-Oleum.
I test them on several different surfaces to compare their performance.
There's a few here that I feel are the top choice and a surprise or two.

well done sir! thank you for this in depth comparison. many questions answered
Thank you for doing everything you do on this channel. It was a long video, but I enjoyed it, had it playing while I doing some painting. I'll have to try that Testors primer and the Mr. Surfacer. Ive used the Army Painter stuff in the past and had decent results with it ..but I'm always looking to improve my arsenal. I wouldve snagged the $105 compressor, but I recently bought the one from Amazon that you linked. At the time, it was the best for the money. Love this channel and it's content, keep up the amazing work!
this is the best primer guide on the internet, it is very detailed, i went for the mr hobby ones, and this video helped me understand primers better thanks so much man!!!!
Wow! Excellent comprehensive video. The hobby community owes a great debt of gratitude to you for testing all of these different products on a variety of materials and surfaces. 🙏🏻
I've been following your channel for the last week. and you're reviews are top notch, you should have over a million subscribers
Thanks for dong this Barbatos Rex - Mr Surfacer is easy to get here , and is certainly my go to now. Tamiya is a close second.
Wow respect for taking so much time to review all this primer 😄👍🏼. The Vallejo Hobby Paint did really surprise me, i will try it
I concur with all the comments below thank you for your hard work and time. Your channel has saved me so much time and money on all aspects on modelling. your a star👏👏👏
Wow just watched this 2 year old primer test you did. Loved it. Thank for all the work you put it to it. Very valuable testing. I use primer on many of my models.
Very nice test, quite comprehensive. For general plastic modeling work, the various Mr. Surfacers are great. For my big models that go in the water, I like Duplicolor primer, but the Rustoleum sander/fillers are very good as well. Thanks for taking the time to compare all of these!
The dedication you have to your craft is impressive. Thanks for all you do. Very informative. You deserve a million subscribers.
Man, you obviously ut a lot of time, effort and money into these tests. Thank you so much for them, they are great helps to my painting skills!
Absolutely awesome! Definitely ditching rustoleum and going to the Mr. Surfaces especially the black. Just wow! I cant believe you did this many! Just watched the whole thing.
Thanks for all the work, this is very informative!
Dude, I really appreciate the work you've put into this vid. Most of the hobby spray primers aren't available where I'm from, so I wasn't sure which auto brand to use for gunpla. I might be able to snatch one of the krylon colormaster or Rust-Oleum painter's touch.
I’m new to model building and I bought Mr. Surfacer 1000 because it was all they had at the store at the time, glad to see I made a pretty good purchase
Thanks for your time on this test!

Wow we don't have that here on the east coast. Plus you get red and black which is a bonus 👍
Looking forward to watching this tonight!
Awesome test! If you ever do another one or if you still have these test pieces....a durability and adhesion test would be awesome! Testing the adhesion of primer to surface as well as the top coat to the primer (which you'd have to use the same top coat for them all). Scratch test where they use something like a sharp screw in a block and drag it over the primers to compare which scratch easier, using a real string tape and seeing if it pulls the primer off, ect. I'm going to get a couple of those that you liked....it really helped me narrow down! Thanks!
Holy hell thats a lot of primer! Lots to choose from for all kinds of applications and scenarios.
This is an amazing video. Incredible work. Thank you so much.

Thank you for this timely introduction to your YT channel. Good old Mr Google bought your video up on my search. I had been looking for a substitute primer as my last 80g aerosol of Tamiya was just about done. While out and about trying to find a replacement I happened upon the Rust-oleum 2X Primer white 340g for much less than a replacement Tamiya can. This Bob Ross happy accident happened a couple of weeks ago and I've been procrastinating about trying the new primer. No more thanks to your timely appearance via Tube-of-You. Now I will go and explore some more of your fine tales. Best regards from Canada.
You have the best videos on you tube that covers are hobby, you should be proud of your work.
my favorite combo is Rust-Oleum 2-N-1 Fill and Sand Primer then prim over with Krylon automotive 2 in 1 primer for mixed material's like resin and plastic . strangely enough it does help with weak points on some thin model attachments

Been using the Krylon ultra flat primer for a few years now. That stuff works extremely well.
Unbelievably great review!!

Dude! Perfect timing...I'm getting back into the hobby ( all kinds of kits AND gaming minis ) and I was wondering how these primers stacked up. I've been using dupli color filler primer for larger kits ( 1/48 war planes ) with fair success. Awesome channel!

Hello Barbatos Rex - thank you for sharing these reviews - I also use these a bit so this was super helpful! I susbscribed!
Rudy Tooty Version compressor with Patriot 105-1 airbrush is only around $170-$219 if it is in stock. A pretty good deal. SpayGunner has the Patriot 105 single nozzle airbrush for $79. They are currently,as of Dec. 2022, out of stock on the Patriot 105 kit with the 2 extra needles. Going for &98. I decided to get the Badger 2020 Sotar with the added .5 and .7 needles for $125.00. I bought one of the single action airbrushes you tested for doing primer coats and the like. I just wanted a second little better airbrush. I bought a different compressor on Amazon that came with an dual action airbrush but I don't know the quality.
As a recent returner to the modelling scene this was just the information I needed, Thank you for such a comprehensive test and sharing it.
Excellent video. I find that so long as a plastic surface is free of cosmetic defects, the best primer is none at all. Just a spray of adhesion promotor, and then topcoats. I've had great luck with Duplicolor adhesion promoter in the aerosol can. Bulldog (harder to find unless you go to an auto body supplier) works great, too, but ONLY if you spray with your own spray equipment. Their aerosol cans are no good, spitting and sputtering globs of the stuff. Overall, for a higher-build primer, I like Rust-Oleum grey. Never noticed any significant difference between the "automotive" one and the regular. It's always advisable to stick with the same brand of paint products for all coats, but I've never had a problem going over it with Krylon or Duplicolor top coats.
Excellent test comparison. Returning to modeling after about 45 years and seen it is a whole new ball game. My biggest concern with automotive and general purpose primers is the solids size. My fear is these would have a tendency to fill the small door and window trim lines.
Loved the tamiya fine primer! I used to use a spray can primer for cars and it tends to become too thick (fills imperfections well but i don't need to all the time). After using tamiya fine primer my end results became much better. Granted i can't fill imperfections anymore. Will just have to get a different solution for that now since i don't need it all the time.

Man Rex what an amazing video.
I have received very good results with the Brite Touch line of primers on plastic models. But I have noticed that they need to be well-shaken and at a warm temperature. The finish is smooth and sucks down nice into detail. I've only noticed Rex's results when the can isn't shaken thoroughly. Plus, the price is great. I've begun decanting it into my airbrush for finer control.
This was very informative!
Thank you BREX!!!! LOT OF WORK

It certainly was... 😉
I was sold Lead Belcher as a primer.. it is a basecoat to go over primers. That is the reason it is so smooth.
I didn't realize the self etching primer was only for metal. I used it on a plastic model car prior to knowing that, luckily without any issues at all. I just didn't like how heavy/thick it sprayed, like all Rustoleum cans.. but the paint came out great.
Awesome test! This is a major asset to the hobby. We owe you big time :-) By the way, for model trains or dioramas the Mr. Surfacer 500 is great for a base coat for "concrete"
@bobrivett7645
8 ай бұрын
I use it for brick, concrete walls, sidewalk, etc for my diorama models.
You should try ,or review the BEHR spray paints. Paint and primer in one, I use them a lot and they are great! Excellent primers and clear coat too.
Thanks for the video. The only one I don't think I saw you hit was TTC (Tactical... Combat Miniatures?) They have a line of color primers as well. You did several I'd never heard of before because I'm from tabletop gaming. The Model Master for example. Usually I hear Tamiya for the 'model' aspect of the hobby.
I have been sitting on my models because I needed to test the rust-oleum spray cans now I don't thank you for your efforts in aiding all of us.
Wow, thanks for the extensive testing! I think the Testors primer is good for unifying the base color when using different modeling materials like brass, plastic, and resin, but it probably falls way short in the smoothing ability that you have with Mr. Surfacer. I can get Mr. Surfacer in bottles for airbrushing, but my local store doesn't carry the spray cans. So my preferred spray can primer is Tamiya fine in grey or white. Usually white for brighter paints and grey for darker paints. I use Vallejo paints, but have never seen the primer. I would like to try it, now that I've seen your test.

You didn’t try it but duplicolor adhesion promoter. It changed my modeling life. Work in automotive and it’s for vinyl body panels mostly (stuff paint doesn’t generally like to bond to), and it’s a blast to use on models. It’s clear so it’s kinda weird to work with.

Very nice and informative video, could you do one on top coats?
Duplicolor plastic adhesion promoter, which is clear, work’s well also.
I just used some Krylon self-etching primer to prime a metal panel, easily the worst spray can I've ever used. I was kind of disappointed to see that you didn't have that one, I was actually looking forward to seeing if you shared the same opinion
Incredible job putting all this together. A great tip for anyone that uses an FDM 3D printer, the primer at 44:30 is fantastic for filling and sanding away your layer lines! Was glad to see this stuff in the video and it really is an awesome primer, especially for 3D printing models. 2-3 coats with sanding in-between will give you a very smooth finish! You should look into a 3D printer for some model printing Rex (as if you don't have enough kits to paint haha)
