Scale Model Tips - 36 Spray Can Primers Tested - Tamiya - Mr. Surfacer - Citadel - Rust-Oleum & More

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here I test 36 different spray can primers for scale modeling. Included in this test are non scale model brands like Dupli-Color, Krylon and Rust-Oleum.
I test them on several different surfaces to compare their performance.
There's a few here that I feel are the top choice and a surprise or two.

Thank you for doing everything you do on this channel. It was a long video, but I enjoyed it, had it playing while I doing some painting. I'll have to try that Testors primer and the Mr. Surfacer. Ive used the Army Painter stuff in the past and had decent results with it ..but I'm always looking to improve my arsenal. I wouldve snagged the $105 compressor, but I recently bought the one from Amazon that you linked. At the time, it was the best for the money. Love this channel and it's content, keep up the amazing work!

Awesome test! If you ever do another one or if you still have these test pieces....a durability and adhesion test would be awesome! Testing the adhesion of primer to surface as well as the top coat to the primer (which you'd have to use the same top coat for them all). Scratch test where they use something like a sharp screw in a block and drag it over the primers to compare which scratch easier, using a real string tape and seeing if it pulls the primer off, ect. I'm going to get a couple of those that you liked....it really helped me narrow down! Thanks!

I'm sort of new to the hobby. Been an artist my whole life but I stick to 3d prints these days. Resin & plastics.... I'm a hand painter and that was my reputation. Watching your videos I am now fluent with my airbrush and the education of do's & don'ts. I am having fun and holy shit sticks like half the time now it takes me for anything. I would cheesy like , want to simply say thank you! If it wasn't for your approach & the way you "hands on" show how to do it all ........ I may have very well quit and just hand painted everything. Videos like this, where we all know you have to be losing $$ doing is seriously appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you for this timely introduction to your YT channel. Good old Mr Google bought your video up on my search. I had been looking for a substitute primer as my last 80g aerosol of Tamiya was just about done. While out and about trying to find a replacement I happened upon the Rust-oleum 2X Primer white 340g for much less than a replacement Tamiya can. This Bob Ross happy accident happened a couple of weeks ago and I've been procrastinating about trying the new primer. No more thanks to your timely appearance via Tube-of-You. Now I will go and explore some more of your fine tales. Best regards from Canada.

Rudy Tooty Version compressor with Patriot 105-1 airbrush is only around $170-$219 if it is in stock. A pretty good deal. SpayGunner has the Patriot 105 single nozzle airbrush for $79. They are currently,as of Dec. 2022, out of stock on the Patriot 105 kit with the 2 extra needles. Going for &98. I decided to get the Badger 2020 Sotar with the added .5 and .7 needles for $125.00. I bought one of the single action airbrushes you tested for doing primer coats and the like. I just wanted a second little better airbrush. I bought a different compressor on Amazon that came with an dual action airbrush but I don't know the quality.

Excellent video. I find that so long as a plastic surface is free of cosmetic defects, the best primer is none at all. Just a spray of adhesion promotor, and then topcoats. I've had great luck with Duplicolor adhesion promoter in the aerosol can. Bulldog (harder to find unless you go to an auto body supplier) works great, too, but ONLY if you spray with your own spray equipment. Their aerosol cans are no good, spitting and sputtering globs of the stuff. Overall, for a higher-build primer, I like Rust-Oleum grey. Never noticed any significant difference between the "automotive" one and the regular. It's always advisable to stick with the same brand of paint products for all coats, but I've never had a problem going over it with Krylon or Duplicolor top coats.

Excellent test comparison. Returning to modeling after about 45 years and seen it is a whole new ball game. My biggest concern with automotive and general purpose primers is the solids size. My fear is these would have a tendency to fill the small door and window trim lines.

  • @ptcarino

Loved the tamiya fine primer! I used to use a spray can primer for cars and it tends to become too thick (fills imperfections well but i don't need to all the time). After using tamiya fine primer my end results became much better. Granted i can't fill imperfections anymore. Will just have to get a different solution for that now since i don't need it all the time.

I have received very good results with the Brite Touch line of primers on plastic models. But I have noticed that they need to be well-shaken and at a warm temperature. The finish is smooth and sucks down nice into detail. I've only noticed Rex's results when the can isn't shaken thoroughly. Plus, the price is great. I've begun decanting it into my airbrush for finer control.

Wow, thanks for the extensive testing! I think the Testors primer is good for unifying the base color when using different modeling materials like brass, plastic, and resin, but it probably falls way short in the smoothing ability that you have with Mr. Surfacer. I can get Mr. Surfacer in bottles for airbrushing, but my local store doesn't carry the spray cans. So my preferred spray can primer is Tamiya fine in grey or white. Usually white for brighter paints and grey for darker paints. I use Vallejo paints, but have never seen the primer. I would like to try it, now that I've seen your test.

First off great video! I just discovered your channel, and this is a great service for everyone, so thank you. If I could make a suggestion, since the videos are long, maybe take 3 minutes at the end, with your summary of the product winners and losers and other notes. Also, have you done any comparisons of varnishes? Matte, gloss, or satin would be great to see. Thanks again. I also liked the decal setters video. 👍

Great video. Can you do a video where you test the various primers for acrylics? Mission Models, Vallejo, Testers, etc.Thanks.

I just used some Krylon self-etching primer to prime a metal panel, easily the worst spray can I've ever used. I was kind of disappointed to see that you didn't have that one, I was actually looking forward to seeing if you shared the same opinion

Incredible job putting all this together. A great tip for anyone that uses an FDM 3D printer, the primer at 44:30 is fantastic for filling and sanding away your layer lines! Was glad to see this stuff in the video and it really is an awesome primer, especially for 3D printing models. 2-3 coats with sanding in-between will give you a very smooth finish! You should look into a 3D printer for some model printing Rex (as if you don't have enough kits to paint haha)

@@barbatosrex9473 I'd suggest something Resin based if you are looking for the highest quality. I'd highly suggest the Elegoo Mars, available on amazon and fairly affordable for the quality. Here's a great video from another channel I follow :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZxrp8V-nbrHYJs.html Although if you are going larger scale, an FDM printer may be a better bet. A Creality Ender is a favorite for a lot of people.

@@barbatosrex9473 elegoos are cheap and great printers! Go for a Mars 2 pro (2k) or Mars 3 (4k) but small print size, or Saturn series (bigger print) like S or 2 (both real 4k). If you have space (and money) enough, definitely for Jupiter but... It's huge, really HUGE (expensive, maintenance costs and replacing components are very very expensive)

@@ScottDodsonVideo there is better than just a Mars (not monochrome-lcd!!!) and Creality for the same prices range. Definitely i would NOT recommend those printers! Both neither amazon (official sellers website are WAY CHEAPER than amazon!)

I had goodluck with Rustoleum Universal Bonding Primer for my Gundams. Just need at least 10 to 12 inches distance when spraying. The key is light coats.
