Scabiosa atropurpurea Grow-A-Long
Also known as the ‘Pincushion Flower’, Scabiosa atropurpurea flowers on strong tall stems in high summer. These delicate blooms dance in the breeze attracting bees and butterflies.
Plants will grow too quickly from an autumn sowing, so we will delay sowing until late winter when the light levels return.
Sow one seed per cell making a small impression in the compost and laying the seed in the dip. As seeds germinate, I find they can push themselves up, out of the compost. Light aids germination so we don’t want to cover seeds. Simply back fill the dip with compost later to secure and support seedlings as they grow.

Really useful tip. I covered my seeds and obviously, they have rotted. Following your post now. 👍

Great video.I particularly appreciate the tip about the cornflowers versus the scabiosas which do much better in the heat of the summer!

Hi, love your video's, 1 question though, do I need to stratifie the coldhardy seeds in the freezer first?

No, only wild carrot should go in the freezer and the Fridge for seeds that need prechilling. You can find all the information on my website and in my handbooks if you would prefer a list of what seeds I chill x

Is there any special handling required to extend vase life?

No not really they last for ages, just make sure you pick just opened flowers so they haven’t been pollinated (see my Cosmos video for that) and at least 4 hours in a bucket of cool water before arranging. The seed pods also add interest to arrangements. Quick link to the harvesting Cosmos video to explore pollination x kzread.info/dash/bejne/kY6clZKxitzdlLg.html
