How the anti-feminist theme behind Avenir escapes such an intelligent woman as Huppert is beyond me! The fact is, this is the story of a woman who has accepted her non-sexual entity as she has aged, in order to preserve the kingdom of being head of a home: the destiny of women since 'forever', while her husband just chose youth. When someone suggested she looks for love again, she says: no, now I'm a grandmother! However she found a way to kick her husband out of family gatherings, and ends the film with the victory of the grandchild in her arms. How wonderful and comforting to see, coming from a philosophy teacher! And they are trying to sell us this as "Freedom"! The director could have had 99% of actresses for this role, (those like that philosophy teacher who whither at 50), but no! She had to get the one who is still a seductress at 60. This is the only Huppert film that got me depressed. Oh! and that scene where she laughs in the bus. Please! She laughs because she wants to cry? The same way this film pretends to be about Freedom when it's lying to itself. All this does not diminish the quality of the film and certainly not Isabelle's beautiful performance. But please do not sell us this as freedom. Isabelle being raped is more feminist than this film.
