Literally look up any top ten best anime or manga list on even the most basic non weeb websites and death note will be up there with stuff like cowboy bebop and dragonball z. I'm trying to watch it right now, but it's difficult. At this point (which is two episodes in), I'm concerned about whether or not I'm supposed to be rooting for Light. More specifically, I'm not sure if there is a reason why I should be rooting for him. He falls into his God complex way too quickly, with very little to establish him as a relatable or understandable protagonist.

  • @Yal_Rathol

    @Yal_Rathol

Scorpio The Scorpion light isn't the hero. the closest thing to a hero is L, and he's a neurotic megalomaniac. you shouldn't be rooting for light, you should be watching events unfold. you'll probably have a much easier time with the anime than the manga. you'll get to avoid pages where the text is most of the page and the images are smaller than the text boxes.

Haaa... This is one of those moments that only Woolie can create, for some unfathomable reason, where I look at my life, and I think, "I wish X didn't exist, so Y could be judged for what it is, and not what X is." I could launch into a counter-rant, but, opinions are opinions. So, I'll suffer in silence with the one thought this left me: "I wish 'Death Note', one of my favorite anime, didn't exist, so I would have never sat through this review." I'd rather have *nothing* at this point.

Ok, wish granted. I'm only a casual fan of Death Note, and this movie was, on it's own, one of the worst god damn things I've ever seen. The fact that it exists means the human race, collectively, is one step closer to whatever hell your religion threatens you with. It is a poorly acted, poorly shot, poorly written mess, with plot holes and contrivances out the ass, that would've been laughed out of the room had it not had the name Death Note attached to it. It is, in every sense of the word, The Last Airbender, Death Note edition. Here's an example: With the Death Note, in the movie, it's established you need a first name, a last name, and a face. How, then, did Light control Watari, with just the name 'Watari' and his face?

People often mistake what is good about Death Note (the original). People think that what is good about it is the Death Note itself, how it kills people just with a face and name, and how much power the owner has. That's not what makes Death Note good. It is the battle of wits between Light and L that makes the series good. The Death Note is just a narrative tool to tell a cat and mouse story, and that is what makes the series so entertaining. So the movie, if existed by itself, already loses the point of a detective story and how it should be. it focus too much on the Death Note and it's Final Destination deaths, and not on the game played by the killer (Kira) and the Dectetive (L). I doubt the Movie would catch as much attention of people if was just a movie about a notebook that can kill people if the original didn't existed.

*THE GOOD* -The guy who plays L was good. -The guy who plays Watari was good. -That scene where L confronts Light about Watari as Light maintains his composure was good, it was something I would've expected to happen in the anime. -Light's father was okay. -Although kind of distracting, the excessive death scenes were pretty entertaining. *THE BAD* -Mia pissed me off the entire movie. -Light was a pussy. -The writing is cringey edgelord bullshit. -The reason for Light and Mia hooking up was stupid. -The Aizen twist at the end was stupid. -The movie doesn't really demonstrate how Light was a genius. They only show him doing other people's homework and that was it. 4/10 not good but not straight up dogshit either.

  • @WonderGamer101

They'd probably make L the new guy with the Death Note, and he'd resist the temptations of the Note, until he starts to solve crimes by killing people, soon realizing that he's just like Light and he needs to be stopped, but then there's like some demon magic that'll just make L keep on killing, until he delivers a final message to the world saying that if they find the Death Note, they should never, under any circumstances use it. And then L just writes his real name in the Note and the movie ends with a nice big bow wrapped around it. That took me like a minute to think up. I don't what that says about me.

Regarding Death Note story, it should perhaps be graded on a parabola, as in the first few arcs are good, but then it goes waaay downhill just after the Radio Station... and I think that is when they introduced Mysa Mysa, who mostly represents a shift in Death Note from being a serious story to some type of 'Super-friends' get together. Then it picks up again after 'Super-friends' wraps up. Nearer the end it becomes sort of like 'Dark Knight Returns' the Frank Miller comic, but I did enjoy the ending episode, which does its best to wrap the story back to what the series started off being about, which is about as good a praise you can get for a plot and tone that changes wildly. I actually binge watched the entire anime in a single day, so the inconsistent tone definitely stood out, as I was worried it would go off the rails entirely, but the great, consistent tension in the first big chunk of episodes is absolutely why I stuck with it to the ending.

My wife, a big fan of the series, just shook her head and walked away.

Dapper Changeling I mean, does it really matter that L was black? It's a new American story, it doesn't matter who plays who in the end

In a vacuum, no. But when it's done by the same people who bitched at GitS for 'white washing.' Also, it WASN'T a 'new American story.' It was the same story. Just dumber.

Dapper Changeling well i feel like white washing comes from the place of having these well known actors who are white just getting roles bc they are popular and new actors cant make their way into the media of film which is an honest problem

While I'll admit I'm also a small time fan, I could recognize a dumpster fire the film was gonna be when the first trailer came out. My brother, a bigger fan than I, did no such thing. He told me he had to stop watching it after TEN MINUTES!

Dapper Changeling so you thought the Netflix death note would be shitty, not for any of the obvious problems, but bc L was black? Jfc dude hide your racism better.

But Woolie, what about those of us who don't give a flying fuck about Deathnote and only want to see the Deathnote fans suffer because we feel it's overhyped to fuck? Also, .hack is superior to Log Horizon. Fact.

Ya know, unrelated to Death Note, this kinda highlights my biggest problem with Matt. It's Woolie's segment. It's about Woolie and what Woolie has done, Matt either has had his, or will get his, and Matt can't shut his fucking mouth for ten seconds and let the man speak. He HAS to butt in every chance he gets and try to be noticed and get his attention, because, oh no! Someone's getting attention that's NOT ME! Oh no!

Really? Cus, listen to any other podcast. It's not 'Oh! I know your story, I'll tell it!" like Matt does. It's questions or comments. And not during the 'what did you do this week.' Listen to just last week, when Matt was gone, and it was one of the best Podcasts in ages. And ya know, even if it was, that'd be ok.. If Matt didn't do the same fucking thing during gameplay, over any and all cutscenes, or anyone else talking. The guy is an attention hound, and an egomaniac. Everything has to be about him, all the time. It's why he made a second LP channel, so he could be in every video on TBFP, and be in Max's videos, but that's not enough, he needs MORE attention, so he has to be in MORE. "But Woolie made a second channel first" as all the fanboys like to say, to which, yeah, a second channel discussing purely fighting game shit, (not playing), and table-top. Not LPs. That's not saying he's a bad PERSON, just a manchild. A charming enough manchild, who's a pretty nice dude, but a manchild none the less.

Im clearly not going to convince you, but all i can say is i think your reading was to deeply into this. They all talk over eachother constantly, if your this mad at Matt, you must despise Pat, cus he does everything your complaining about like X2. Also, does Naruto, animation, and guns to heads really constitute "just fighting games and table top"?? the first thing Woolie did on his new channel was a Naruto LP ffs, what you said in regards to second channels is objectivley false. feel how you will tho, i get Matt can be kinda irratating at times

You don't seem to realize that what you're saying Matt does is what they all do. All the time. They're friends and they interrupt eachother. It's extremely common.

hes not smart though. like at all. Like they SAY he's smart but he never actually does anything smart until the last ass pull (that shouldnt have even worked given the rules they made in the movie).
