Great video Austin. You can't force it to be something it's not. Nobody should be saying you didn't give it an honest effort. I may do my 10 shot ladder test our 26" 7 PRC with 175's, just to see where peak pressure is and what velocity we can achieve. But I want to finish the 160CX testing first. Good stuff, keep bringing the truth.

Actually there is a legitimate reason Alliant grades come from three sources: 1) Most Re grades from Eurenco Bofors in Sweden (which also produces all Norma marque powders) 2) A minority of Re grades (i/c Re17) from Nitrochemie Wimmins in Switzerland 3) All ball-technology powders from the General Dynamics' St. Marks Powder Co. plant in Florida Only St Marks isn't directly affected by the ammunition components crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Finland (which has just joined NATO and will shortly switch cartridges to 5.56/7.62 requiring a complete reinventory and replacement of its ammunition stocks) and Sweden are tooling up like nobody's business and sucking up vast quantities of powder for loading military smallarms ammo. (if you lived just across the Baltic Sea from Russia, you'd tool up too!)

I agree, you should have picked up some Federal ammo. I am getting ~ 3000fps in three 7PRCs all with 24" barrels and a bit over 3000fps in the one I have with a 25" Brux barrel, with Federal's ELDX ammo. If you get another 7PRC to test, I would be happy to donate some ammo. I have 5 cases of that Federal factory ammo. Since you have a channel, reach out to Bergara and see if they will allow you to test their Wilderness Sierra in 7PRC. They have shorter barrels but look good. Of course on KZread, I have no idea how to privately contact you but would ship you some ammo to test if there's a way to privately share a shipping address.

Makes me appreciate my 300WSM even more. It gets 3100fps with 175gr LRX and H100V with relative ease. I get minute of moose accuracy with my rifle every day all day if I do my part 🤣 Hey, who doesn’t like shooting cloverleafs at 100? But… for practical hunting, shooting dots at 100 is way overrated IMO. Cheers!

I don’t have a dog in this fight, but Hornady marketing is genius, and a lot of people are falling for the hype. These guys were smart enough to increase twist rates, and spec tighter chambers. Very smart! But, there are a lot of great cartridges, that only need a quicker twist rate, to make them even better. 243 Win, 270 Win and the 7mm Rem Mag, just to name a few. Hell, the 6.8 Western is basically a fast twist 270 WSM. Hats off to Winchester. Rifle manufacturers are catching on, and offering several fast twist offerings.

Mossberg patriots tend to be less accurate. Ultimate reloader has the backfire channels Mossberg and it appears it is a bedding design how the mag well fits into the stock. So a poor design.

I helped my friend load for his 23 inch barrel custom 7 prc. The factory 180 eldm shoot about 2830 fps but with a large ES. Using ADG brass and H1000 we could get 3000 fps without seeing any noticeable pressure but with hornady brass it's not possible without blowing primers or having very loose primer pockets. We settled on berger 180 hybrid target and 180 eldm around 2840 fps. With the 168 barnes lrx we used hornady brass for load development and velocities much over 3025 fps started to give primer pocket issues. The 168 lrx with Adg brass at 3000 fps using h4831sc gave great results and consistency. Zero pressure signs too. N560 is also a good powder for faster velocity in 168 or smaller bullets and n565 is excellent with 175 to 180 grain. R26 is excellent for speed but it's almost impossible to find. When shooting copper bullets, try jumping them between 0.075 to 0.125 inch from light jam (using hornady guage). We also had better success with less pressure jumping the 180 target type bullets near 0.100 also. The biggest key for shooting faster loads is to use premium brass like adg or lapua as the cases handle pressure much better than hornady brass. Basically with Handloading, a 7mm rem mag and 7 prc are very similar (7 prc holds about 2 grains less powder). With custom rifles in 1:8 twist barrels and premium brass, velocities and accuracy was very similar. The 7 prc has a slight advantage in a short barrel but a 7 saum is a better choice for shooters wanting sub 22 inch barrels and or shooting suppressed.

I agree concerning the 7saum..disappointed it went away..friend had one in a little ruger that was just absolutely fantastic..sold it when winchester beat remington out in the short action magnum wars and you could no longer find ammo for it..but i will agree as it's already been stated elsewhere, that there are many great cartridges being developed that are really not needed..just to be contemporary and sell new rifles. You have to be a reloader,experienced with access to the nessasary components to keep them running. The great 338federal comes to mind. ..and there are and will be many others.

@@camwinston5248 the 7 saum has made a bit of a comeback with custom gun builders as it's very efficient, especially with suppressors. You can build a rifle on a short or long action where as the wsm calibers are needing a medium action for proper use of case capacity with copper or long target bullets. The 6.8 western is another great case in either a short or medium action. The 300 wsm in a medium action and suppressed with a 18-20 inch barrel is really efficient. The 7 prc is too long for a medium action but not enough more case capacity to justify a long action. I like the case as its pretty efficient compared to a 28 nosler but it's not faster or much better than a 7 mag unless the purpose is to shoot heavy target/hunting bullets like eldx, eldm and berger.

You need an Xbolt. Why is everyone so obsessed with max speed? I’m more concerned about accuracy, reliability and consistency. My Xbolt 26” barrel is getting 3/4 moa or better with every factory round I put through it. Xbolt rifles are the new rifleman’s rifle. I have both 6.8 western and 7prc in Xbolt and am so pleased with the quality and performance of them that I have converted almost exclusively to Xbolt rifles!

I own an X-Bolt in 300 H&H. Like yours, it’s 3/4” MOA. Best push feed rifle for the money. One problem is a heavy tripper, which is practically unadjustable unless you change the spring. That’s my only qualm.

@@falba1492 I didn’t mind the factory trigger but I’m getting into precision long range so I changed the spring out in both of my Xbolts and now have them set at 2.5 lbs which to me is perfect for hunting and precision shooting. I’m not an expert just my opinion!

I had an X-bolt in 22-250 and I couldn't get it to shoot. As far as the trigger it was awful even after replacing the spring. I know a lot of Browning rifles shoot amazing but I'm in no hurry to buy another one.

What gun do you have?

7PRC is the first 7 magnum where the freebore was designed correctly/appropriately, in my opinion. I love it. Regarding the "book max" discussions, I've gone away from even referring to this. The only book load that means anything to me is the starting load. From there, "max" is found in whatever rifle I'm loading for and I work up from starting or just over starting loads that are published. The majority of the time, my rifles achieve their max over or well over what any published data has. I have found a few combinations where my rifle's max was LESS than published. Case in point, I have two 270 Winchesters that cannot get to Barnes' published max of Reloder 19 powder (59.5 grains) and a 130 grain bullet. As to Mossberg, I've read it numerous times again and again, they make good shotguns. (That's where it ends). To me, with all the tech we have and expertise on firearms, even budget friendly rifles should have continuity of quality. The name Mossberg, like Christensen Arms, to me automatically means any rifle you buy is a gamble, a 50/50 chance at a lemon, or it could be a shooter. Not even worth whatever they (Mossberg) charge for it - $400? $500? $600? I'd rather put that money towards a build I'm going to have to save up for or just get a superior name brand, which, for me, is Tikka. However, I am watching some Bergara Wilderness Sierra's right now in 308 and 7PRC from $921 to $957.

I think they cooked the books on the overall speed of the prc. Similar to expectations of mileage on a vehicle. They market new cartridges to sell to the keep up with crowd. We will see in time which ones are the true best cartridge. Dust in wind for most.

I like how you put that. "7PRC is a good cartridge, it just isn't what the hype says it is". I'd have to agree 100% it's also certainly not the greatest cartridge ever made. Good video. Kudos for being fair and honest to the best of your ability. Couple thoughts. 1. Every Mfg has variables in their products. 2. I don't think any of us were expecting match performance, from a $450-500 gun... and not everyone hunting needs a 1000 yard track driver. That rifle and cartridge would meet the needs of 90% of the hunters out there today. On the 7PRC. People are still talking about the disappointing velocities of Hornady anmo... Just a reminder.. WHEN the original Hornady ammo was delivering 3000fps... Don't forget that many rifles were also blowing primers! The facts seem to indicate, that even with RL-26... the velocities were not legitimate for factory rifles and factory ammo.

I saw in another video that the PRC calibers seem to produce a carbon ring faster than traditional calibers due to the tight chamber dimensions and this might have contributed to the pressures you were observing. The video said you should clean your barrel thoroughly at every 40 rounds. Depending how much factory ammo you shot you might have been approaching 40 rounds before you even started reloading. This is just a thought. Maybe traditional calibers were designed the way they were for a reason. Better functionality in adverse conditions. If you're going to use tight tolerances you will need to be more careful to keep everything super clean to insure accuracy and performance.

So glad I bought a 6.5 PRC instead. I'm using Barnes Copper for hunting. This gun is a Howa 1500 24" carbon wrapped barrel threaded for a brake etc. I'm using H1000 powder. Still in the midst of load development, for a very early winter Cow Elk tag in Utah. This rifle replaces a 270 Winchester that im selling.

Meanwhile, I got a new Ruger American Gen 2 standard in 7mm-08. Didn't do anything other than clip the trigger spring a little at a time to get a nice 2.5 lb trigger pull. So far it's shot 5/8 and and 3/4 inch groups with a couple of different factory loads. Very pleased with it!

That was fair description of the Cartridge in my opinion. It's no whiz bang ultra mag..but can pretty much equal the 7mm Rem mag. I have a 7 prc..its the most accurate rifle I have..its a 26 in barrel 700 long range. I thought about trading it in for a bona fide whiz bang..like 6.5 x 300 or .257 wby...but it just shoots to good that I can't part with it..I hope to get a garmin chronograph soon..and find out its velocities with the 3 diff factory loads I have for it..thank you for your videos..keep up the good work.

Whats the bore look like? If the stock/bedding wasnt an issue i would try tubbs final finish bullets to smooth the barrel out and then try loading for it. May come around. It tends to copper foul much less and clean up much easier and improved my 257 roberts tremendously

When there’s so much hype on the market and so many devoted fan boys it’s hard to navigate the BS. I’ve had great luck with the 7 PRC myself and can say I’m very pleased with its performance. Excellent overview and review of this cartridge and a $500 rifle with good features for the price and even trying it out in a $2200+ rifle. I kind of want a do all cartridge that I can learn long range shooting, run suppressed and use to hunt anything up to and including elk in a lighter rifle. Plus I want a left hand rifle instead of a right hand rifle like my 300 WSM is chambered in. I do have a 270 Win, but I am not going to thread the barrel on a rifle that my Dad bought me 25 years ago. I still think that 7mm PRC could be a good choice but I know that I can find 7mm REM Mag ammo in any store vs 7 PRC if I head out west and lose my ammo.

Good video, I’m really interested in the upcoming 7 wsm videos you have on the way. PS I got my Weatherby Mark V Live Wild in 280 Ackley. It actually came in 2 months early, I’m anxious to get it to the range, but it’s either raining or a 100 degrees.

Okay, I finally have some data with 7mm PRC, Factory Hornady ammo Hunter and match with my heavy 30" barrel I recently set up with a Tikka action. Match 180 gr, the average was 2948.5 FPS, Hunter 175 gr, the average was 3021.0 FPS. Both were under .5 moa. You might be interested. Only 80 rounds through the barrel, so it should speed up closer to 200 rounds. My 190 Berger reloads average 2837 fps just at the start of pressure signs with H1000 at 65 gr, which aligns with the Hornady data. It was all using Hornady brass, I finally received some ADG brass, so looking forward to seeing how it performs.

Tks for a honest review. All cartridges have their usefulness. It's hard to reinvent the wheel.

The only recent cartridge I can think of that's a massive jump forward has been the .277 Fury that case designed for higher pressure has real potential in larger cases provided receivers can hold up

I like the guys who say "my rifle doesn't show any pressure signs with my handloads" that are way over book max. Maybe they don't show seat of the pants pressure signs but that doesn't mean they're not 75K psi.

if they were that far over pressure you would know without a shadow of a doubt. It has been proven so many times that reloading book are on the very conservative side. It would be near impossible for every person that goes over book (which is a stupidly high number) to be perfectly fine if what you say were true. sounds like you might just need to educate yourself some. You can not go over pressure by anywhere near that without signs of it let alone something worse happening

I think it's really cool that Mossberg sent you that rifle to test. We have two Patriots in our home - one in 6.5 Creedmoor and one in 7mm08. I bought them both for my kids to deer hunt with. The one in 6.5 Creedmoor shoots sub 1/2 moa (believe it or not) but the one in 7mm08 is nowhere near as accurate. I put Timney triggers on both and set for 1.5lbs. Both guns function very well and are pretty good guns considering what I paid for them. The one thing I dislike the most is the way the action is bedded to the stock. Maybe it could be glass and/or pillar bedded and shoot better, I don't know. But unless Mossberg changes this and improves their bedding (or whatever the heck is causing these guns to shoot like crap) it's very unlikely that I will buy another one. I'm curious to see what your next Weatherby cartridge will be.

I'm stepping down to 7 PRC and 6.5 PRC. A Weatherby 307 and a Savage Klym. They're both hunting rifles and not target guns. However, I expect MOA. Did you ever look at the plastic bedding block in your Patriot? I mentioned this before. They crack if action screws tightened too tight! I believe 25ip MAX! That's why MB puts red locker on action screws. Cracked and gun no shoot!😢😢😢

Interesting fact…I have a CVA Cascade and a Weatherby 307 in 7mm PRC. The CVA shows pressure MUCH faster than the 307, I worked up loads and shot them in both rifles. The Weatherby is getting 100 FPS faster with a 2” shorter barrel, only factor is the chamber since I was able to work loads up higher. I am no expert as to why there is a various difference in chambers and pressure. You may want to try a different rifle…

@@ReloadingWeatherby Will do. I'm currently getting my nephews car ready for Miatas at the Gap and then I'll be getting back to it. I have 100pcs of ADG brass once fired, cleaned, sized, primed, and ready to load.

Think the 338 weatherby rpm might be most versatile north American rifle.

I would rather have my 7 rem mag any day !

Honestly, you can almost get to 7mm PRC velocities with the same weight bullets in a 280 AI. Quite a bit less powder and less recoil. I'm going to keep my 7 PRC but I'm going to build a 280 AI as well

As cool and amazing as it is, I think he may be too enamored with his new 340 Weatherby to go down that rabbit hole.

Every rifle brand seems to have some issue with their rifles except accuracy. That’s literally the worst issue mossburg needs to figure it out I would buy almost anything but their rifles. Seems a lot of people are having pressure issues with the 7prc because the chamber is so tight.

Soft brass brands vs tough brass brands also comes into play when showing pressure signs. I would make sure that the action is bedded, barrel is freefoated before I ever fire a round....good time and money spent!

I've heard that argument about brass.

Less than 3” groups at 100 yards with box ammunition and a mass produced rifle is an hunting rifle. Anything around 1.5” groups is an accurate rifle. Less than 1” (sub-MOA) is a Precision rifle. From there, you can go to custom loads and custom builds. You don’t always “get what you pay for”, and many people get sub MOA with the right lot of OTC ammunition and a $1200 rifle, but most are spending more than $2000 in that space.

Wonder if Federal/Alliant stuck it to Hornady on purpose...

If you get a magnum... get a 26 inch barrel

I know other reloaders, who have tested factory ammo, have had the same issue with 7prc. Even on youtube like Backfire Tv.

I personally haven't had good luck with Hornaday ammunition. I haven't tried the CX, I've only shot American Whitetail and Precision hunter. My favorite ammo is Federal and have had great results with the blue box, fusion and terminal ascent. I think for the money that fusion is one of the best rouds out there. I have tested them and they expand and hold together really well. I'm not a fan of frangible bullets so i wouldn't buy eldx or berger even if Federal was producing it. I don't own a 7mm PRC as i dont see that much advantage over my 7mm rem mag.

I think 300 PRC is better... a bit more recoil though

what is your experience with seating berger bullets? i have heard that many seating dies dont work well with them

There are some seaters with vld type stems you can buy. For most part its not a problem unless you run very tight neck tension and then the seater may mark/deform your bullets.

@@zebacake4683 yeah thats all I use is rcbs stuff and so far no major issues. My 300 wsm die did have tight neck tension and the seater would score the vld bergers. I went to a bushing die for that gun and no more issues with .001 less tension. My 308 and 28 nos dont have issues

First off, love your channel. As for velocity, if the load is accurate, velocity doesn't matter. If you're hitting your target , we'll that's the whole point ain't it? Will the animal notice the difference in velocity?

I would say most guns are accurate. And if you have RL-26 or shoot Federal ammo... you will get that coveted 3000 FPS

@@ReloadingWeatherby and 565… have had real world exposure with VERY positive results - testing with a friend - 24” barrel. 160 Hot Cor, 175 LRX, and 175 ELDX. Very accurate powder IMO. Testing Grand soon because it was available for purchase as well.

6.8 Western is King

The reason for the velocity issues boils down to Hornady changing powder on their 7PRC loads and not telling anyone while keeping the velocities on the packaging from the original powder. If you doubt what I'm saying just give Hornady a ring and inquire yourself. Sadly Hornady didn't think through what would happen if they failed to inform the public about their ammo recipe change while keeping the original ballistic data on the box??

On my Savage you will not run over book max with 7PRC. Actually with n560 i run almost 3 grains under max to not hit pressure but still has good speeds. I will say this gun has been an little aggravating compared to the other cartidges ive loaded. Been debating on a rebarrel in some other long action magnum

I was just looking into 28 nosler with factory nosler ammo claimed it would 3200 fps with 160 ballistic tips. My 7mm weatherby with 160 partition weatherby factory ammo my rifle is a stock mark v with 26 inch barrel through my chronograph it shot 3200 fps with 160 partition and 3300 fps with 150 ballistic tip my be worth looking into maybe new video. 😊

Ramshot Grand shows loads exceeding 3000fps in a 24" with 175gr, just ordered some to try in my 7mm PRC

Love them or hate them. Ruger American series. Have been on average the most accurate out of the box rifle for me. Yes they need trigger help. I'm not a big fan of the AR style magazines. However they shoot well.

I enjoyed you video on “Saying goodbye to my 7mm PRC.” You gave the rifle and the cartridge a fair shake. I’d definitely cut the rifle and cartridges loose too. You mentioned that you got a lot of criticism for your objective opinion on the cartridge and rifle. Isn’t it funny how everyone on KZread and the shooting forums always seem to know more than you, their rifles always shoot less than 1/2 MOA, and their muzzle velocities are always 200 fps plus, faster than the maximum listed velocities in the reloading manuals? I like your content on your videos and I commend you on being objective. Don’t let anyone discourage you for that. The 7mm PRC isn’t for everyone. It’s a “new hype” cartridge that in truth, doesn’t do anything the the old cartridges of yesteryear haven’t already been doing for decades.

Mossberg makes shotguns and if I want a shotgun I buy Remington.

Anyone critiquing you for not finding the one lot number unicorn factory ammo that works because it was loaded with RL26, is just a consumer, and their opinions are based on marketing. Any cartridge that can't be improved or fine-tuned through handloading is essentially a relec or fad like the old WSM craze that fell short of being spectacular.

No that's not it... It's not hard to find reloaders hunting advocates and we'll know companies achieving that number here on KZread. Every gun is different..... barrels need a good 100- 125 rounds through before they settle into their achievable limits for FPS. Off the top he first states that the gun was inaccurate with do to a bad chambering , rifling, bad barrel blank... I re barreled a 700 Remington with a McGowen tube because of the individuals claiming it was just all lies. Even after watching Gunwerks and Reloader KZread showing otherwise. It has shot comfortably over 3000 fps with 170 -175 and touches with 180 I had some old boxes of Hornady original ammo and have ran both H1000 and Winchesters Hd powder with zero issue I gained about 75 fps after the 110 round count. Since it's been steady above. Although personal I run 155 terminal ascents at 2950 and it's lights out. I love when any body barks back you clowns can't handle it and come up with excuses. Dude tested a bad rifle and basically what he came up with is this is how this round shoots in this rifle. There's nothing more to extrapolate than that... It doesn't even speak to how the rifle general performance. That particular rifle wasn't a good example. Ever brand has those rifles that just don't run.

@RookCustoms Triggered! You said a lot, but the fact remains that 7mm PRC is not living up to its numbers more often than not. I have handloading friends like myself who have experimented with 7mm PRC, and it takes a 26-inch barrel and extra hot loading to hit the claimed numbers without RL26. I started reloading with my grandfather when I was 12, and now I am 59. I have reloaded many new cartridges and many "antique" cartridges with about every powder under the sun. Sometimes, you just run into a wall and can't get more out of it. The 7mm PRC is a good cartridge but no better than the other choices in the same category. Just for handloading component availability ease (brass), I'd choose a 280 AI if I wanted something in the same category as 7mm PRC, only without the new fancy brass. This is another Hornady fail alongside the 6.5 Needmoore.

It's likely that particular rifle & not the cartridge. As for the hype, no new product/cartridge is going to be advertised as mediocre. Hornady's mistake was choosing a powder that the competition manufactures.

My experience with velocities in book specs is different that yours. In my 22” barrel, with 65.5gr of N560 and 175gr ELD-X, I’m getting 2945, so …. Every gun is different. Barrel quality is a major factor. A mass produced factory barrel isn’t going to perform as well as some others.

Curious… I’ve never reloaded for a cartridge that has so much variability across the bullet selection for OAL… are you on book-ish for the 175 ELDX? I know more to it than that but I’m curious where you landed… loaded with a friend 160 Hot Cor, 175 LRX and 175 ELDX and the COAL really surprised me.

The saying “you get what you pay for” comes into play here I think. Mossberg Patriots aren’t the most accurate rifles. Especially with those ridiculous plastic bedding blocks. Their barrels aren’t anything to gloat about either. Get yourself a good, quality rifle with a quality barrel and watch your results drastically change. My hunting rifle has a 22” Proof barrel shooting factory 175’s at 2,865. Reloads with H4831 are hitting 3010, but show the best accuracy backed off to 2950. Bad factory ammunition from Hornady, using a powder supply issue as an excuse, is ridiculous. Federal is using the same bullet getting acceptable results. On the rifle side, custom built rifles and higher end factory rifles aren’t having any issues either. At the end of the day though, regardless of the rifle/cartridge combination, I would rather it shoot accurately rather than it shoot fast. I can always add some elevation adjustment. Just my two cents. God bless.

I probably won't get one again... but I have friends with good rifles in 7mm PRC

The 7mm mags need a 26” barrel to get max velocities and so what, its a magnum. My Rem Mag has a 26” barrel and I love it. Go to the gym if you can’t carry it, suck it up if ya wanna shoot a magnum. Happy Huntin.

Book max needs some explanation. The Book is an illustration of the pressures of what happens in the ballistic lab with their rifle, their components. The book is meant to be a guide, not an absolute. Your rifle, your components maybe very different.

The books are certainly not the Bible of handloading. But in the two rifles I tested the books were right on. But that isn't always the case. My Weatherby rifles hit pressure way before book max, but they are also 200-300 FPS faster than the book velocities.

Was that rifle bedded?

@reloadingweatherby Austin, I hope all is well. I wanted to speak my piece here, as I have heard you say a something a number of times in a few of your videos that are incorrect. Minimum Impact velocities. For reference; Hornady ELD-X Official Minimum Impact Velocity to reliably initiate expansion: 1600 FPS Federal Terminal Ascent Official Minimum Impact Velocity to reliably initiate Expansion; 1400 FPS Nosler Accubond LR Official Minimum Impact Velocity to reliably initiate expansion; 1300 FPS I feel as though you should add disclaimers to a few of your videos updating your viewers on this information. While I generally agree with you that the vast majority of people should not be hunting past ranges where this starts to negatively affect most factory loads, I can see this coming to effect reloaders that are planning to download to these velocities for reduced recoil loads (Kids, Wives, Disabled, Older, ETC...) Personally, I can attest to the Terminal Ascent expanding at roughly 1462 FPS (.308, estimated based on velocities certified by chrono prior to hunt). I feel as this is valuable information and should be portrayed correctly across social media platforms, to keep the industry honest and the people informed. This is not meant to be demeaning, and hopefully it wont be received that way. I enjoy your content and I will continue to follow you, but I just wanted to make sure you were informed of this info. Thank you!
