    This is great! I'm a beginner player and my teacher tells me I'm slap tongueing on staccato notes. I didn't understand what I was doing until I watched this so thank you very much for the explanation.

    This is the best explanation of this difficult technique I've ever seen. I was able to create a slap for the first time (once) but now I know how it feels and I can work on it. Thanks!!!

    exactly....kind of like when you get that first altissimo note...lots of work afterwards but it's the moment when you then know you "can" do it. Before that I question whether I'll ever figure it out. Took me years to get my first altissimo note - thought I'd never get it.

    @@Saxcomprehensive Derek's the king of slap tongue...but for rest of us just to have this in our toolbox would be awesome right? So after 2 days of working on this I actually did it! I thought it would at least take months like most things do for me. The key for me was 1) pulling my tongue back over the reed like when you cluck your tongue, and then 2) to make sound it worked after closing my throat...so my mouth was sealed and the breath out was like you would for circular breathing - just air from my cheeks/mouth cavity.

    Thank you very much for these explanations. I have a question, when you apply the succion does your tongue grab a little the extremity of the reed which would explain why it can hurt the tongue and cause the extremity of the reed to break? This would also explain why closed slap tonguing can be done with a small amount of mouthpiece in the mouth.

  • @Saxcomprehensive

    Hi. There are many ways to create a closed slap tongue. Some grab the tip of the reed with their tongue and pull it away from the mouthpiece. But this method can damage the cane reed and hurt your tongue if you are not used to it or know how much pressure to apply. Others will only use suction. The tip of the reed will touch the tongue but is not grabbed by the tongue. With practice it is possible to create the suction closer to the tip of the reed but may take a long time to develop this skill and as such there is no need to grab the tip of the reed. I have only seen 1 video on KZread where the musician states that he grabs the tip of the reed and he says that in doing so has never damaged a reed. All other videos talk about using suction only. I suggest that you do not try to grab the tip of the reed but rather work on creating the suction closer to the tip. See Derek Brown's video on slap tongue where he explains this in more detail. Hope this helps. Thanks.

    Great video! I've been a life-long slap-tounging-is-impossible player and after this video I've finally made some forward progress! I have a question for those of you that have been working on this: I am able to get pretty consistent "pop" with the barrel of the mouthpiece pressed against my hand (so I can feel the "sucking in" on my skin). The problem I'm having now is that I'm unable to create that vacuum when I get my hand out of the way and try it with just the mouthpiece. Any ideas? Cheers, just subbed to you.

    Hi. From what you have written it seems to me that you are trying to create a suction by sucking out the air in the mouthpiece. The suction is only formed between the tongue and the reed so that your tongue sticks to the reed and pulls it away from the mouthpiece. The sound is amplified by blowing a small puff of air at the same time. Check out the slap tongue videos on saxophone academy and on Earspasm Music. Both these videos will help and are the best I've seen on the subject. As Derek Brown says 'it takes time'. Just keep at it. Some people can create the slap tongue but have problems making it loud which is done by the puff of air. Thanks.

    I'm a beginner, and my teacher is telling me that I need to place my tongue on the roof of my mouth. Are there options when it comes to that ?

  • @Saxcomprehensive

    @Saxcomprehensive

    Hi. Some people will practice the sensation of slap tonguing by placing their tongue flat against the roof of the mouth and quickly pulling it down or they will practice on a large surface like a spoon or palette knife. Once they know how to do it, they will put their tongue on the reed with more of the reed touching the tongue and do the same. Some will use suction to pull the reed away from the mouthpiece while others will grab the tip of the reed and pull it down with the part of the tongue further back. There are also variations to slap tonguing that gives a different effect and so different ways to do it, though some may call these methods not slap tonguing. If your method works then use it as there is not a 'correct' way to do it. It will either work and is loud or it wont work. Thanks. Check out Beatbox Sax by Derek Brown. He does a lot of this sort of stuff and explains different methods.
