Recently went to a jazz con and got to try out a bunch of saxs from Antigua, cannonball, Yamahas, and even rampone cazzanis, but the one sax that stood out was all of the p. Mauriat, especially the 67rx influence. It has the best tone in all ranges, a very stable low register and an easy to play but also controllable high range. It has a naturally dark tone which I instantly noticed and fell in love with. This is definitely a dream horn for me right now, probably something I’d pass down generation to generation. Now the question is which lacquer

Man, there seem like so many good horns these days. In my day there was Selmer and that was it. Yamaha was just getting decent back in the 1990s. I played Series II alto for years. Experimented with a Yanagisawa bronze horn, but eventually went to a Series II before I quit playing. I wish some of these horns were around when I was coming up in the 1990s.

Played a couple of gigs in the Yamaha big band in the early 70s. Run by a famous lady tenor player. She said: On a Yamaha the sound goes straight out. On a Selmer the sound goes up and out. On a Conn the sound goes up. Hence a lot of big band players favoured the Conn - you can hear yourself.

It's been a while since I've played a UL alto, I own a 66RX UL tenor. If you are able to play both, I'd try them out and see which one you like better. I preferred the dark to everything I've played. One thing to consider with the UL, it'll get old looking really really fast. Because there is no lacquer on it, it will look super old in a matter of months.

Hi Scott, I've just upgraded from my Yamaha YAS 280 and bought a P. Mauriat System 76 2nd Edition. My first impression is that the horn looks great and it feels quite solid and is definitely heavier than my Yamaha. I`m not a pro but I can definitely tell this is a very different horn than what I`m used to playing. There is something concerning me though quite a lot. It is much harder to blow than my Yamaha. I don`t think there are any leaks; all the notes play OK. I tried the P. Mauriat horn with my Yamaha neck and it seemed to blow a lot more freely. So it could be related to the neck, or does all this sound normal? The sound is definitely much more smoother than the Yamaha and when I play notes without the octave key it sound very nice like what I understand a vintage sound should sound like, but it seems like I've lost something at the top end. I should also mention that the horn has not been setup, it came direct from the factory. Any advise you can offer would be much appreciated.

Hey Gerard, I came from a Yamaha too. I was playing a Yamaha Custom. My experience was the horn had a much bigger fatter sound, and was easier to play. I play a 67RX which has a bit of a different feel than the 76. But it should feel the same in each octave. My guess is that you might either need to switch the strength of your reed down a size, a trip to the repair shop could also fix the problem. All kinds of things go wrong when a horn is shipped in a box. Good luck with it.

Hey Stefan! That was definitely the hardest part of making the switch. They felt weird for about a month or more. It didn't really slow me down or mess up my technique, I was just hyper aware of it feeling different. After a month or so it just felt normal, and now I can switch back and forth with no problem at all if I'm playing a students saxophone. They also make this exact same sax with out the silver key touches. It's the 67R. But to me, there was a giant difference between the R and the RX... so I went for the RX.

I use a Barkley Brazil Kustom Pop 7 Blue. If those low notes aren't coming out, you've got one of three problems. 1. Your horn is leaking. 2. You're using to hard of a reed 3. You're not lowering your tongue enough to get those notes to pop out. What is your reed/mp setup?

How does this horn differ from the System 76? They're pretty close in price. I know the 67R has rolled tone holes, but what are the other differences? And is the "Influence" 67R much different from the regular 67R? Right now, I'm leaning towards a System 76 UL. But I'm torn because the 67R seems pretty great too. And they're in the same 2800-3400 price range so I'm having a tough time deciding.

  • @ScottPaddock

Hey Joe! It all comes down to preference. I thought the 76 was pretty good, thought that 67R was great, and think the 67RX is the absolute best horn I've ever played. I'm not sure what the difference between the 67 and the 76 are. BUT, the difference between the 67R & RX are the key touches. The RX has soldered on silver key touches where the R has glued in abalone shell. To me it makes a big difference in the size of the tone. Try all 3 and buy the one you like the most!

Action is one of the easiest things to fix! Take it to your repairman and tell him you want lighter action and he will loosen the spring tension and you will have faster, lighter action. Most sax companies send out a horn with tighter springs because it is easier to loosen them than it is to strengthen them. My repairman takes any horn I bring to him and matches it to what he knows I like.
