I had an old jazz musician tell me, when I said my sax sounded good but I hated all the scratches, to take some salt and rub it into my eyes until the scratches don't bother me anymore. So true, if it plays good, that is what matters.

If you're technical you can remove all the mechanics and then wash the sax under running, warm water with a little bit of detergents. Then take a cloth and wipe the sax, before putting back the mech's. If you're not that technical, you can use the cloth on reachable surfaces without removing the mech's, and as a complementary use brushes or similar for difficult areas, just like in the video. Maybe it doesn't become as nice as with a Dremel, but it shure prolongs the life cykle of the sax.

  • @HarmonicaMustang

The same with my harmonica. It was brilliantly clean and smooth when I bought it, and I swore to always keep it in the case when not playing. I kept my vow, and it still got scratched. No idea how.

That is NOT a "grinder". It is a "dremel" type tool with a "buffing" wheel attachment. A "grinder" is a tool that removes metal from an object. You are BUFFING the keys....NOT GRINDING them.

Rouge is an abrasive, it is iron oxide suspended in wax. Using polish of any sort scratches and removes metal, that is how it works. Pendant notors are commonly refered to as die grinders, or "grinders."

If it is truely a 1903, You need to check the Pitch to be at 440 and if not, it will be of little use playing with any modern instruments at the Low Pitch standard. Can me a pretty Display or played with Rare High Pitch instruments. Even Pianos would have to be re-tuned to play with it.

30 years ago when I was in high school I had a saxophone swab for my Tenor Saxophone. I would put it in the instrument every time I wasn't using it and just let it sit there until I needed to pull out the swab to play the instrument again. I wonder how much spit and watermarks there would be if everybody who plays a saxophone put a sax swab into it anytime they're not playing it.

It's more appropriate to ask how many pads have they had to replace over time! I restore Vintage saxes for fun and even my 1926 Bass has many original pads. They slobber sticks keep moisture against the pads longer and can cause fungal growth in leather pads. Never leave a slobber stick inside a sax. Even student horns will get broken down pads with those. But it is a thing salesmen sell to students. A pass or two with a Silk string and pat is much more effective and will protect your horn better and safer . use it every time you [lay your horn. I often have 3-4 Clarinets and saxes on stage at once and it takes time, You still can beat the Drummers to go eat after a gig though!! Make it a habit! I once had a pawn shop give me a satin Gold Plated 1934 Buescher Alto because it's case smelled so bad, They couldn't open the case! I did a complete restoration and in is in a Collection now. Was a Dream Series in satin gold and burnished in the engraved area. About as good as you can get for altissimo and professional work.

Looks like an old foredom model with a #30 handpiece, though more likely a chinese knockoff. The #30 is not ideal for delecate work. A collet handpiece like the #8 or #10 or even #28 is far better.

Please no not encourage anyone to EVER Machine Buff any Professional, Plated, or Vintage Saxes ! It will ruin their tone quality. And there is no way to recover from a mistake, the best way is to do it the hard way by hand and with a cloth. It takes time and saves the horn's character. For Student level Machine made horns it could be OK but any heat created by a machine buffer on the main body will just make a sax sound worse. It is OK for attachments but nothing more. I have an collection of about 60 horns and restore Vintage rare horns. I would never buy a horn that shows signs of a mechanical buffing. They will never sound the same again. My Best Friend had his MK 6 he played professionally for over 21 years And hundreds of Albums, Ruined by a ignorant mechanic that buffed his horn after being told not to. That mechanic never gets pro work again. Old Seasoned Repair guys know better. The new guy that tried to work on his horn was fired. He had to borrow my Mk6 to finish a concert series with the the Temptations until l we found him a replacement Mk6, and the shop had to pay for it! Never EVER think about machine buffing a professional Sax! Buffing Student horns can be done but they never had an equivalent sound quality to lose. BTW, it is why some of the ugliest Vintage Horns sound the best! No thermal damage from Powered Buffers! Many poor shops make that mistake to save time but ruin quality horns. If you have a pro horn you need a quality shop that has experienced veteran experts. Even ugly vintage horns. It takes me about a full weekend and a few rouge cloths to disassemble my Silver Bass sax hand buff it then reassemble it and regulate it for a few weeks after. NO SHORTCUTS! The equivalence on skin is like a tattoo, It will take 4-5 times the cost to remove one, but it will never be totally removed and will always be a scar.
