That's what I used about 20 years ago except that I bought a couple of longer pruning blades. I didn't even dig out the dirt until after I had cut the roots. Blades can be sharpened and they are expendable. I still prune with my recip saw. I plan to be doing some branch cutting tomorrow.

Nice video! If you dump a big bag of salt in that trench it will keep the roots from growing back and busting up your conduit. It may not be a big deal for electrical conduit, but if that was a plumbing pipe I would definitely recommend the salt.

I came to this video because I face a similar issue, but with the woven near-surface roots of maple trees. I've been trenching 18" deep for an electrical run and it's actually the first 4" deep that is the hardest. I was thinking that if I run a reciprocating saw along the edges of the trench BEFORE I start digging, that things might be a bit easier. As it is now, I struggle to even the tip of a shovel into the ground. In my case, if I run into big thick roots, I can go over or under them - I'm not so sure that cutting those big roots is a good idea. Those are some significant looking roots - what effect does this have on the tree(s)?

Honestly I want the tree in question to go. It’s a dangerous tree. It’s just a matter of time before I hire someone to cut it down. It’s been pushing two years since I cut those roots and it’s had no signs of this being any problem to the tree at all. It’s a big tree and will cost me around 3k to cut it down. I want the tree to die. Good luck with your situation. This stuff ain’t easy

I'm all about ingenuity and problem solving, but this is NOT A WISE IDEA!!! Seeing as those roots are still part of a living tree (the tree is right next to them, roots were hydrated and had good color, no stump nearby or rot/decay to suggest they were old), sawing through them is a sure fire way to kill it. And that tree is positioned in a precarious position between the shed and house so when it falls it will likely cause serious damage/injury. This may seem like a quick fix in the moment, but will surely be a bigger problem down the road.

  • @FarmerG

+Bailey Tenerovich Yes. All good points. I agree. However, that particular tree is on the chopping board. It will be cut down within the next two years. It's only a matter of time before it's roots start to destroy the outdoor/pool bathroom. It also drops pine cones the size of bowling balls. With kids and pets no good. Not to mention it's also within range of the septic tank leach field. The shed will also be moved soon. The tree is just a big problem. It should never have gotten this big to begin with considering it's location within all these moving parts.
