Saweetie on Hair, Discrimination, Feminism and her Meteoric Rise to Fame
Ойын-сауық
GLAMOUR’s second ever Hair Issue is here - and with a love for everything from braids, blonde buzz cuts and her bucket full of wigs, our Best Friend and Grammy-nominated rapper, Saweetie speaks to Olive Pometsey.
Cascading down the 28-year-old rapper’s back in streaks of yellow, pink and everything in between, not a hair is out of place as she sits down in front of the camera to be interviewed. It’s an appropriately show-stopping look for the cover star of GLAMOUR’s second annual Hair Issue. “Hair is important to me because it’s a form of expression,” she says, matter-of-factly. Amen.
You’d expect nothing less from the woman whose debut platinum-certified 2018 single Icy Grl introduced her to the world as an unapologetically ambitious, fabulously put-together force to be reckoned with. And with a real name like Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, sparkling is practically Saweetie’s birthright. But still, watching the iced-out star in action is something to behold.

That’s exactly why we love you saweetie because you never let anybody label you and put you inside of a box you go after what you want and nothing stops you .
Saweetie is always gonna be my favorite celebrity she's so chill, funny, inspiring and humble. She deserves every blessing and award she gets.

This was a great interview. Her answers were of substance and definitely displays her intelligence. I’ve never really got into her music like that but she’s a beautiful woman inside and out.

Love everything about Saweetie! Always so positive and uplifting of other women. She just grinds hard and minds her business. She’s a true boss. Funny af (that laugh just gets me every time 😂) beautiful and a good vibe!

You have to love saweetie, she’s such a light 💖 so beautiful and innocent
This was a great interview. I must say that its very rare to see mixed race people-especially mixed race women speak on issues that severely affect the African American community. Yes, there are struggles that affect African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians, but Black people have a four-hundred year history of being the receivers of the worse type of hatred.

As Saweetie always says which I agree "I know thats right...."Beauty and brains go a long way! Love that distinctive laugh too.
Saweetie looks great (as always). I listen to her music & this is why you can't always judge an artist by their lyrics. After viewing this, I see that she's articulate & passionate abt certain issues. She supports other women! "I love pretty b**ches!" 😍
I aspire to be this gorgeous, wealthy and cool 😎
She is amazing and inspiring, love her ❤️❤️❤️

Wow such little viewers?? On saweetie😩😩😩
❤️💖
when she say, "I'm a business woman" this is what I think
Swarovski on the neck??? Niiiiiiccccceeeee
her saying she didnt feel black enough really resonated with me, I'm a lightskin, and in cold weather my skin tends to go pale, so i don't look black at all, then on really hot days it comes out. I've struggled with trying to feel like i fit in with other black people because I've had several people say racist things in front of me not knowing I'm mixed, as well as people tell me i cant say things or act certain ways or participate in certain things because I don't 'look black'. recently my dark skin friends have been making me feel a lot more accepted, and I've definitely grown to be more confident and stand up for myself when it comes to being excluded from representing my culture, but i do still have a way to go.
I don’t think we could call Saweetie’s journey as a ‘meteoric rise to fame’ 🙃
SAWETIE HAS CHANGED HER WHOLE LOOK. WHY? She looks nowhere like the person I knew 4 months ago WOW.

This was an incredible interview to the point where I thought it might be scripted, but na my girl is just intelligent. It’s nice to see she’s breaking that stereotype of her being seen as shallow. She’s more than that 💜
Me too
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
You spelled mediocre wrong 🧐
I like that she said water is good for anxiety that is a big Fact. 💯
This is such a political conversation and interview with Saweetie. Wish we could have seen some of the images she referenced of her hair and mom's hair, her bald head, and more. I didn't know her ethnic heritage. Black and Asian. The whole conversation of not belonging is also informative! I am fascinated with how one goes from being a tomboy and an ambitious athlete to being ultra femme as a rap artist. But this also points to that we as human beings are full spectrum...AND it's not lost on me that hegemonic femininity rules the celeb space among women. I do love her emphasis on gender equity. I just wish Glamour was more inclusive of butch femme representation for someone like Saweetie.
Does she also touch on how she benefits from colorism and being obviously biracial? Cause we need to get to the nitty, ladies. If you can address your pain, you can also address your privilege.
