Myrskyisenä kesäpäivänä vuonna 1790 Kymijoen päähaaran suu täyttyi savusta, laivoista ja ihmisistä. Ruotsinsalmen toiseen meritaisteluun osallistui noin 350 alusta suurista 40-metrisistä saaristofregateista pienehköihin soudettaviin tykkiveneisiin. Mukana oli yli 20 000 ihmistä, joista moni ei koskaan palannut kotiinsa.
Kohtalona Ruotsinsalmi -näyttelyä varten taistelupäivän tapahtumat on tiivistetty kahdeksanminuuttiseksi tarinaksi, jossa näkökulman saavat sekä ruotsalainen että venäläinen laivasto. Se avaa merimiesten ja sotilaiden kokemuksia sekä kohtalokkaan taistelun tunnemaisemaa. Tapahtumien kuvaus perustuu uusimpaan historiantutkimukseen.

On a stormy summer day in 1790 the mouth of the river Kymi was filled with smoke, ships and people. Approximately 350 ships ranging from frigates to small gun boats participated in the Second Naval Battle of Svensksund. Many of the 20 000 men present never returned home.
For the new Fateful Svensksund exhibition the events of the day of the battle have been condensed in to an eight minute story showing the points of view of both the Swedish and Russian fleets. This new interpretation portrays the experience and emotions of the fateful battle and is based on the most recent historical research.
For now, Smoke on the Waves can only be seen in its entirety in the new Fateful Svensksund exhibition which opens at the Maritime Centre Vellamo in Kotka on the 9th of June 2020.
