Two fringe religious groups I've done research into both have quasi-military groups/activities: the Church of Scientology and the Nation of Islam. Scientology has the Sea Organization, fashioned after the Navy due to L. Ron Hubbard's alleged heriocs in the Navy. Nation of Islam has these drill groups, foi, mgt, etc. Personally, I just see them as an interpretation of the stepping black fraternities and sororities do wrapped in religious and faux military themes. It's an elaborate performance. (Fun fact: Scientology and Nation of Islam have actually intersected to a degree...) Do I personally support either of these groups? No. Scientology is rampantly abusive and, as a black woman against racism AND black supremacy/nationalism, I do not support the Nation of Islam . Will I respect their choice to believe what they wish? Yes, as long as it does not involve abuse/harm.
