I know the graphs are super accurate but they do say he was without a settlement from turn 128 to 192. That is about 64 turns on the move. From turn 128 to 192 his military strength does go down. From about its highest point to about nothing. The only other high point in military power was the first time he lost all his settlements. His finances hit 0 about halfway between turn 64 to 128. This would have been about when he was at his biggest. To me it looks like he spent most of this campaign on migration, mostly avoided fights, and the few fights he did get into were bad ones. Without money or settlements you can't replenish troops. Also explains why he was using mercenaries instead of faction troops. If he was able to get money, he would need to spend it on mercenaries to quickly replenish his forces. To me this does not look like sabotage. It looks like a cautious player playing on a difficulty a little above his pay grade.

I would also like to point out that since his finances hit 0 before his settlement count he likely couldn't pay for his army's upkeep. But when he got sent packing he kept all of those troops rather than relying on the free horde troops. This means he'd get further into debt. Then if he accidentally sacks a settlement instead of occupying he can get out of debt (maybe) for a turn but doesn't fix his income long term. Sacking also doesn't repair his army. And the units with upkeep (mercs more costly than normal troops) put an unnecessary burden on finances than horde units. For advice if he bails on last settlement to save troops I'd suggest he already have a place in mind. Can always catch up with horde units later. If in fights to use the units with upkeep first since the upkeep becomes more of a problem as time drags on. -Have migration planned out -Bail on upkeep units before horde units.

@@totalwartimelapses6359 With how unreasonable the AI is in total war games (just look at the -oh yes, sure we will pay for you to became our vassal AND A TURN LATER WE WILL ATTACK YOU-) is, it wouldn't surprise me if it was something else. There was also a plague in southern Italy, so how knows, maybe it wasn't even war, just a disease eradicated the city.

In the defense of the Goths, when offered to make Legend protectorate, firstly legend asked for a hefty sum of 5,000 gold, which they complied. Soon, the Vandals attacked the Goths, so they would naturally asked their protectorate to come to their aid, right? After 5,000 gold and Legend's refusal, it's no wonder the Goths would be pissed.

TheDAWinz today I started a Julii and peaced with the Germans to take on the Gauls and Spanish and then they immediately attacked my settlement on the same turn so trust me the ai can be total assholes

1:07:20 I seem to remember the rome 1 grand campaign having a settlement in the north east that had amazonian warriors that could wreck early tier units. A few times I would send a diplomat to try and brine them into joining me. They were a real boon for factions without horse archers.

I just finished BI campaign few days ago as Eastern Roman Empire and was disappointed. The barbarian factions never did anything. I played on VH/VH and they just stayed in their starting towns. Huns and Vandals just kept running around sacking until they were the richest factions, never settling down and once they ran out of troops they started running away from fights around map randomly. The Western Romans had some towns go rebel but apart from British isles they remained hold of everything and what went rebel didnt stay rebel long. Saxons, Lombards and whatever all had one, max 2 towns. They always marched troops around their territory before getting back to their town. Never fought anyone or expand. This was the most boring TW game session I ever had and was quite envious seeing the minimap in this Total Disaster. Before seeing this I just thought the game was not properly balanced.

David Navrátil in mine the huns have been attacking me but I defended against them on one of the bridges and the western empire also attacked me and actually have a better economy and infantry to mine. I’m enjoying the campaign but obviously not as much as I enjoyed the western empire.

Bit of a necro, but my experience in BI is typically one of immense dynamism and chaos. The Huns typically act like a sweeping horde, never splitting up too far. Most of the battles I fought as the Romans were either in the Levant against the Sassanids or in Dalmatia and Lombardy against the Huns/Vandals/Sarmatians. It takes time, but eventually enough factions are roaming hordes and they typically go for the rich cities in Italy. The West typically can't afford an army to both prevent/defeat revolts in Gaul and Iberia, and also defend Italy. You have to choose, but even then you're going to be losing a few cities. Most if the time you get it back the next turn because you destroyed most of the 4 stacks that took it on the defense, but it hurts when Ravenna or Milan lose half their population and all the buildings are damaged.

It’s pretty cool to watch legend absolutely wreck enemy armies with a couple of generals.

"Well at least we've got the sarmatian armored archers here so all we have to do is take out any of the- aoh god damnit..." don't know why, but this had me laughing everytime I watched it.

Kept hoping he would use the bucelarii against the heavy infantry, especially the one where his faction leader got killed. They're armor piercing if I remember right. I know there are only 12 of them, but that's still 12 x 30 armor piercing bolts.

It takes some effort to push west as Sarmatia rather than doing the obvious thing that i always do, and fending off the Huns as we push into and usurp Sassanid lands before crushiing the ERE... whatever, this is a nicely different appraoch to watch! GG as ever Legend ^^

Umm, actually this sounds as very unintuitive thing to do. You have to go all the way around Black sea to reach Sassanids which will take a lot of turns to do, when you can just become a horde and go south at day 1. Take European part of ERE in one blow, crush Goths and pick up on WRE as well. You'll have 6-7 fairly build up cities, tons of money and means to create a huge HA army to ROFL stomp anyone on sight. And it all can be made in first 10-12 turns, tops.

is there any way we could play those disasters ourselves? i think it would be really nice to try to match your campaigning level

the exp bonus in med 2 gives attack and defence bonuses also. it just gives less bonus to attack and defence. if im not mistaken every second chevron gives +1 attack and every third chevron gives melee defence +1 for example 2 bronze chevrons gives +1 attack 3 bronze gives +1 melee defence. 2 silver chevrons gives +2 attack 3 silver gives +2 melee defence, same for gold +3

they changed it to chevrons only give attack and it's for every third chevron gives +1 attack it gives morale too now these changes are from the steam version of the game, I remember that my disc medieval 2 game gives attack and defence with every few chevrons, but that game was way less balanced than what we have now

no, the figure known as Artorius was a roman-briton,probably from the roman-briton aristocracy, hence the position of command. He was made Riotamus,king of britannia. The sarmatians only had a few cavalry turmes in britannia and with the roman withdrawing from the island century before they probably left too.

40 battles in a century? Weak! I had a particularly destructive campaign in IBFD, that lasted ~37 years (2 tpy: I didn't use the script), and it had 511 battles--nearly all of which I won. By God was that my finest campaign! Those were the days before cheat codes were known, so yeah, every last victory was earned. I stopped playing when one of my rare defeats sank a fleet carrying my best general, and his entire army. But I'd won the campaign by then, and Asparus (the general), had conquered nearly all of Italy, pretty much on a shoestring budget. Still, the best single military operation I've every played in any total war mod (or vanilla). Belisarius would (I hope) be proud! EDIT: for those wondering: Asparus and his gang were to land in Narbonne, to bypass the Burgundian and Lombard Settlements. He was then to proceed to Arles, and from thence, conquer all Gaul.

At this point im wondering if their is anything you cannot do, especially in the medieval 2 or older games. At this point i'm more curious on how/if you fail to recover a campaign. That being said, if you cannot save a campaign would be interesting to see if its possible at all.

Once you are in the black I would delete the mercenaries and horde the settlement so I have a fairly decent army to go around sacking with little to no cost

after that one campaign when he had only one man left nothing seems so bad as a start

Wouldn't the correct opening move be to capture a city then immediately intentionally lose it? That'd give you a bunch more free horde units right? Then from there you have a bunch of units you can use to take more prosperous cities you'd actually want to establish a new homeland in. Not 100% on horde mechanics for BI tbh. Kick too much ass to get to that point.

Yes, this would have been easier; just click the horde button on the settlement screen (no battle needed). Imagine Legend is more used to newer titles than the BI horde mechanic, which is fair enough. The Sarmatian horde AI actually did that once to an AI neighbor of mine, super annoying!

Well Well clearly one can see at 1:42:04 one can see that the guy way basically giving all sorts of money away to bribe various factions, including the Goths.

Vanilla RTW is hard for me to watch, but this video was excellent all the same. I hate that this is even possible because of how broken the AI is, but still, it was only barely possible so very well played!

Also 1:21:44 moment won me my entire WRE playthrough. Never had to keep large garrisons and I needed a moderate relief army for mopping up the remnants.

You should have seen the face i made when i saw the troops in your army at the start of the campaign...

And I tough I was good on this. Really a legend.

No idea what you were doing at 20:30. Move the army to the docks, build the ship and next turn send them across. Instead, you leave the army in the settlement to be besieged and try to recruit some horse archers that require 2 turns. Also, only high tax rate when public order is at 130? Are you supposed to be saving this campaign or fking it harder.
