    I just love saving seeds. It's just love seeing what's going to come up since it's not always the original. I compost in place (just bury my scraps straight in the garden) so I'm always getting stuff coming up all over the place. :-)

    I grew up helping in the garden but I have forgotten a lot of things. My folks seldom bought seeds the always harvested mature seeds at the end of the growing season. My grand parents had seed Verities some passed down from their parents that went back maybe 50-100+ years as they harvested new mature seeds at the end of growing season every year. I have read over the last 30 - 40 years or so years that seeds from plants from other clamits will evolve over 4-5 growing seasons to become a stronger adaptive plant for soil types / amount of moisture / angle of sun ect. I remember in about August they tear off 15-20 little strips of cloth n examine each bean plants n pick the strongest n best producers maye longest pods then tie a strip of cloth in the top branch. Then they would go ahead still pick green beans on all the other plants right to frost. But let the bean pods of the plants with the strips of fabric mature these beans was next year's seeds they watch very carefully before the dryed up pods started to split open they would gather them n trash the bean seed n save for next year crop. I wish I had been told or instructed when I was young to write down all the information my grand parents related to me. I have lost so much information that they tried to teach me. Now maybe my dumb question : I'm wondering after you scraped them seeds out could that squash have been baked n eaten like you would pumpkin.

    So just any time of year, kinda isolate your biggest plant, let it seed. I would guess peak season would be most ideal time rather then late or too early. To get best seeds.

    Save all of those seeds you can. If they are non GMO you can sell them on ebay for about $2 plus shipping for 25 seeds. They do need to be shipped in a small bubble envelope so they don't get crushed during shipping. (the post office rolls the envelopes through, without the bubble envelope they might get powdered squash seeds LOL) That price gets included in the shipping costs... but it is still just the cost of a envelope for the most part. Many seeds can be sold online... often it is pretty easy money. The non GMO seeds are best. Squash plants are one of the highest gmo culprits.

    Every time I dry squash seeds, they get too flat like there's no body to the seed and they curl up. I try to flip them as they are drying so the drying will be equal on both sides but it still dries super flat like there's no content in the seed and then they curl up. I have been figuring that I did something wrong. I followed your procedure, but this is still my result. Are the seeds any good? Will they still make a plant? I use heirloom seeds.

  • @MrMcGillicuddy

    @MrMcGillicuddy

    They are immature seed. You need to leave the squash on the plant well beyond edible if it's a summer squash and make sure a winter squash is fully ripe and store it for a month or so after harvest to make sure you have viable seed with a plump look. That is a healthy embryo. Flat seeds do not germinate and if they do they will be a weak defective plant

  • @BAYOUTOWNProductions

    @BAYOUTOWNProductions

    I have left the fruit on for a long, long time until really hard, but this still happens. I just don't know why it's not working for me. We've had to practically saw through the shell of a summer squash hoping the seeds were finally ripe.

  • @MrMcGillicuddy

    @MrMcGillicuddy

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@BAYOUTOWNProductions Yeah that sounds very peculiar. They definitely aren't producing embryos and the only two things I've ever known to cause that is picking winter squash before the stem is brown and corky and growing F1 hybrids. Do you only use heirloom? or do you grow heirloom and then other hybrids that might cross with the ones you are trying to save? Personally I grow only one variety of each species each season so they don't make strange squash . I grow one pepo variety, one moschata and one maxima

    I see what you're saying. I did have one hybrid in a small patch near to the heirloom. I only plant heirlooms from seed, but I had bought one hybrid. I have lots of bees and butterflies pollinating in that garden. I will try again next year and I am also building a green house and a high tunnel to try to be able to manage it all better. We have had extreme rain and then extreme drought back and forth. It's been so weird here with the weather.
