Hello! I love your videos and I’ve been following for a very long time. I am in need of your help at this time. I have a phalaenopsis orchid plant and repotted with just the pebbles like one of your videos. Apparently it didn’t work because more roots died and I almost have non- left. My leaves are still healthy-looking but the bottom ones are getting thin and yellow. I really want to save my plant. Do you recommend changing to the one you’re using in this video which is “Phalaenopsis Monterey Dark Imperial Orchid Mix” from RepotMe company? I would really appreciate your response! Thanks

I needed this. I repotted mine into a bigger pot and lost all the roots along with stem rot. Not sure what I did wrong because I’ve repotted before and never had problems and I used Monterey dark phal mix. So now mine is in orchid ICU

There really is so much conflicting information out there about Orchid care. But, there are any number of variables, too, that determines what an individual’s best practices will be. That’s why it is crucial to under WHY a certain technique is effective; and, that’s why I trust your advice completely, Dani. You always take the time to explain the reasoning behind your instructions in a concise and logical manner, giving your audience the knowledge to make decisions for themselves.

I just LOVE you and your videos. I love the way you clip right along, not dragging out the subject matter. I love the fact that you never say "UH, UM, Y'KNOW, etc) I love that your video is always centered on your subject with just your hand to direct attention, accent information. Great video! I got a phalaenopsis last May and it looked quite like this, had 1 flower spike and looked okayish but when I went to check the roots they were all gone except 1. So I cut the flower spike and did a sphag & bag for a few weeks, because I couldn't water daily as I was out of town,, it's now potted and has 5 roots 😊. Winter has stalled things but I'm hoping once the weather perks up more new roots will appear. I've learned so much over the last year watching your videos and I'm hoping to expand my collection soon to use all the knowledge I've gained, so thanks for making great videos!

Thank you for addressing the sticky droplets. It is seldom mentioned in any of the orchid videos. The first few times I encountered it I was worried my orchid was sick or something was wrong. After a while I just ignored it after seeing that nothing happened to the plant. However, I still didn't know what it was until a saw a video a while back that finally explained what the droplets were.

This video may just help me save the orchid I gave my mom. She transplanted it into soil and left it in the sun... She doesn't know the correct way to care for an orchid. I myself am still learning. My first goal is to revive that one

I'm currently babying a phal that, after about a year of being happy and growing a couple new leaves, had all but two roots die (the other two I got at the same time from the same place both got sick and died, so I isolated this one around the same time so if it was sick it wouldn't make my happy mini phal sick). It is starting to stabilize, but much to my surprise, it is growing a new leaf. I haven't noticed any new roots, but haven't messed with it too much other than to keep it hydrated. I thought for sure it would focus on roots before a new leaf would show up.

Good Morning Dani, I have a Phalaenopsis that had this same problem as the one in the video. I have three roots left and I cut everything else that was dead. The three roots I soaked for 15 mins (i didn't spray it with peroxide though... didn't know), let it air dry a little, put it in some better bloom bark chips, and put some moss on top of it. I checked it this morning at it looks good. But the question I have how do I water it. Do I pour water on the roots and moss? I check it by lifting the moss up and looking at the roots. The moss is still damp.

Thanks for mentioning the happy sap. I found some on my dendrobium canes and I was wandering if is some sort of pest excretion... what a relief.

I had the same problem with two orchids I received as a gift. Intuitively I thought that the spikes needed to go. It seemed logical to me as well. When I cut the spikes, they were full of water. The bottom leaves of the plant are not wilted, only the top two leaves are. If you think about it, that means that the water isn’t going all the way to the top of the plant. Thank fo the video!

Thanks so much for your videos...they have been very helpful. I received a phalaenopsis last mother's day in full bloom! Everything was going quite well I even managed to have two new beautiful flowering spikes this winter. But recently I noticed that the leaves were starting to limp. I was so upset when I realized I had over watered and was having root rot. I have watched so many videos and have learned so much. I have taken all the steps to save it and although it does have a few roots left I just finished watching this video and cut my two spikes 😢. But what I am wondering about is how frequently to water. I just ordered the potting media u suggest even though I did just repot on new media but bark type. But what is the best way to tell when it will need water. I am using my tap water as it did so well but I realized I was incorrectly watering it. Thanks to your videos I am much more educated on the proper way. Thank you for any help or suggestions

I cringed so hard when you pulled the rootless Phal out of the pot haha 😆 dead roots ahhhhh. I’ve had that happen quite a few times when I was just starting out 🙈 On the happy sap and nutrients point, I have also noticed with my orchids that the newer growths get the benefits before the older ones. Once the new growth(s) finish, I notice the older ones will start to receive nutrients. I think it’s smart for the orchid to focus on new roots/growths that will then sustain the whole plant in time. Very interesting 😊

Hi Danny! Thank you for the informative video. I have an observation that I've made over the years of growing my phals: my phals seem to halt growing their roots, and even experience some root tip die back when flowering! Is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for this video. I am utterly heartbroken. I am a new orchid parent and repotted my orchid for the first time a few weeks ago. I was too rough and broke most of the roots. She has one root left and I thought she was for sure gonna die. Her leaves are not as firm, but they aren't anywhere near this limp. I think it will be a long journey, but this video gives me hope that she will survive. Since she only has one root, I have no clue how to tell when to water her now though bc I can't see it.

I was curious why you left the bottom two leaves that are partly yellow? I live in Hilo Hawaii, and at the orchid show events I learned you cut everything that cannot recover. Thank you so much for the tutorials🥰👍🏝

I have some orchids that are growing and flowering nicely but recently I notice that one of them it's getting a film or layer in white and I'm not sure what it is. I looked for any pests but didn't find any and the leaves are hard. I'm new to growing them and I love them. Thank you for your video. I bought 2 phalaeonopsis orchids without flower spikes and they are dehydrated. Before repotting, in your opinion may I after cleaning and getting rid of decomposing roots properly, can I soak the orchids remaining roots in clean water for several hours before repotting. Trying to save these girls I bought on clearance. Roots are in ok shape, leaves are extremely dehydrated. Thank you.

Hi Dani, i use your method of saving rootless orchids and it has worked on a nelly isla i have, but i am not seeing as much progress with phals! In particular one phal i have has only two small aerial roots left, and i cut a developing flower spike to conserve energy, i keep it moist with microfibre strips, however it's not focusing on root growth and instead is growing another new flower spike! Why is it doing this? Is it a last ditch effort to pass on it's genes via flowering? Shall i cut the new tiny growth and hope it eventually gets the picture and forms roots instead? It's frustrating not seeing the phals even try to produce new roots!

Hi Danny, I hope you will see this comment, even though it's an older video. I have revived several orchids using your technique and advice, but 2 phals are just not having it! One is a mini, it had a few roots left so I placed it in a small pot in a mix of bark and moss (this worked for them all before), but it didn't like it and lost more roots. I placed it in a tiny pot with just bark, which seems to be better for it. I tried different locations for it (warmer, colder, mini greenhouse on my main orchid window) giving it a few weeks to adjust every time, but it didn't like any of it and continued to decline. Now it sits on a bathroom window which it tolerates, along with other mini rescues that are doing great. This one hanging in there for about 3 months, not dead, not declining, but with no new roots at all. Any advice? The other stubborn phal is regular size. Same story - no roots, no improvement since October, didn't like any location in my house, even the bathroom. I gave it to another orchid rescuer just before Christmas, and they have the same problem with it. The darn thing just does not want to live, but does not die completely! What else can we try? How long can it possibly take to produce roots?? thank you!

I agree with your theory. I mean I’ve been seeing these sticky droplets on my leaves lately and then when I cut the stalk to encourage a new spike it was so juicy. I even realized that I had ants trying to get to my plant a few times. Its really sticky.

Hi! Love your channel! I’ve learned a lot thanks to you! I want to ask for your advice. I have a very stressed orchid that I neglected for almost two years. By the time time I started caring for it, it was almost dead. However it did bounce back and gave me two keikis in each flower spike. The spikes only have one root each. The mother ended up losing all its roots but one tiny one that is about an inch and a half long. I have it in an ICU set up, with spikes still on along with keikis. Leaves seem fine... it’s been about a week that I cut all the rotten roots. My question is, at this point should I cut down keikis and pot them on their own so the mother can recover, or leave them be and see what happens? I look forward to your advice! I want to save this orchid so bad!

Hi Dani I have an orchid that was severely dehydrated with no roots. I cut the flower Spike and put it in tea water. No roots have grown in 3 months. It's no longer dehydrated and new leaf is growing. Should I pot it or leave it in the water.

Does anyone know what kind of orchid appears at 3:20 on the rear left? I am guessing oncidium/odontoglossum- trying to identify an orchid I have that has dark green round pseudobulbs like that. I finally made the hard decision of cutting off the flowers spikes on my mini white phals yesterday 🙁. Some how it started to lose a lot of roots and the leaves were severely dehydrated. I hope I cut the spikes in time to save the orchid. Thanks for the video Danny!

Hi, no I would just make sure to wet the top of the medium and existing roots properly :)

I got a just add ice orchid from the store & although it looked pretty, it was in bad condition when I got it. It was not taken care of properly & I tried my best with what I had. It is now a corpse with just stems, dead leaves & no roots. It is a corpse. I can't get myself to throw it away. Thank you for this video!!!

Hi I also have one very similar that I cut the spike off (heaps of sap too) and planted semi hydro just over a week ago. Thought I would lose this one but the top leaves feel a lot firmer and is now pushing up a new leaf with maybe 1 small viable root. Is this coincidence or maybe I am doing something right. My track record hasn't been too good in the past but thought I would give semi a go as I live in a hot humid climate and phalaeys don't do too well, even though that's what they sell them in.

I had a friend who had four extremely dehydrated orchids and I took them to my “ICU”-After removing dead roots, leaves and spikes, I soaked them in water overnight-the whole plant, and then drained the water off the plant, give it a day and soaked them again. Each had its own water bath. I added Super Thrive to the water (1/4 tsp/ gal). After the first soak you could see some improvement. You can continue the soaking routine until you feel the orchid is ready to pot. I did two cycles but you can do more. After I potted the plants I continued hydrating by spraying water on the leaves (staying away from the crown) and massaged it in. Repeated often during the day. My mother helped and would do it every time she passed by one plant that was really struggling. After about a month or so the plants looked happy and even showed some signs of growth.

Bambi Opie They were in a decorative landscape pot-lots of different plants in a shallow but wide bowl-like 16” across. So, yes, I took them out before soaking. They lifted right out. I trimmed their roots and then let them soak. Just like pseudobulbs-Phals leaves will plump back up to a point if they aren’t too far gone. The plants weren’t in bloom, so I didn’t have to worry about a stem/flowers. Super Thrive is suppose to help plants absorb water so I had mixed it according to directions (very little is needed). And after that we’d manually rub water onto the leaves a couple of times a day. Soaking helped the most. The president of my orchid society said I could have given them two or three rounds of soaking. In overnight. Out several hours. Back in. He said three rounds would have been okay. He has a degree in horticulture, so I trust he knows. I had already potted them back up by then. I guess you could do the whole pot but it takes longer to dry in between rounds. Plus, if it’s root bound in the pot the first soak would be best in pot-then pull it out, remove media and trim it up.

I have one that did exactly this, I have a flower spike growing but lost a lot of roots. Should I cut it off? I have been doing research and watching videos about the media. I had it in the bark mix like you had it but read that Having it in sphagnum moss will help with regrowth when there aren’t many roots. So for sick phals like this you put it in bark mix and miss on top, should I do the same and why? Why not all moss? Thx

Hi, moss is used to retain more water, nothing more (some will debate it has some properties, I never experienced anything so I won't take those things into account). If you cannot keep bark watered,or you don't have availability, you use some moss and it helps out. If you can keep the roots hydrated, you use whatever medium you like to use best :) I use both methods generally, depending on my mood hehe 😋

Hi Dani, I have a few questions but not about today's video. 1. In a video you did rewarding mounting orchids u mentioned u may have an idea about a different kind of mount. Did u come up with one? 2. Have you ever tried growing brassavola's in hydro.LECA? I have a very large one that I just transferred to a a Lechuza self watering pot. I thought about mounting it but it would have to be one big mount & heavy also. Any ideas? I live in SW Florida where it rains pretty much every day. High humidity with temps in the low 90's day & 70's nigt. In the winter here we have been down in the high 30's to low 40's but not for day after day. Mostly 50's at night, 60's & 70's daytime with very little rain & low humidity. 3. I really hate sphagnum moss since it seems to be a home for gnats, I believe. When I bring plants in to enjoy them when in bloom, these tiny bugs drive me crazy. Do you have this problem? Thanks; love your video's.

I am overall not ok with mounts, too much maintenance for my possibilities, but if I ever invent something then you'll know :) 2. Yes 99% of my Catt types do great in leca 3. By blooming section, do you mean the flower spike? Don't worry, with proper care the orchid will push out a new spike, or even grow a secondary spike from what's left of the old one (if there are still viable nodes left on it). This will take a few months for sure (my rescue phals took more than a year to rebloom). Hope this helps, even if I'm not Danny haha!

Hi, no, there isn't much to say, the orchid presumably has roots so all is well, it can be hydrated and leaves will grow gradually bigger. Careful with fertilizing and not over doing it, as with all stressed orchids :) there is a link talking all about leaves in description!

Whenever I use moss it just makes the root of roots near it rot. There is decent air access but maybe I need a fan or something to keep air moving. I’m in the uk so bit that hot... any advice please?

Try using less water. I had the same problem. Realized my mistake was over watering because my mini orchid is flourish with just damp moss compared to my other phal that had completely wet moss. Hope this helps!

but what if i get a brand new flower spike on a sick rootless or mostly rootless orchid that I'm trying to get roots on with some other techniques you've suggested. Snip or let go, and if you suggest snip, snip as soon as you are sure its not a root, or let it grow a few inches first

Do you not use the cinnamon technique anymore? If you don’t why?

Is it a good idea to cut off the keikis and pot them separately? I have three growing on my Phal and I am worried they might be draining the mother plant

Hi, can only speak from my own experience, so no guarantee it will work with your orchid - I had one that lost all leaves only 2 days after I bought it- not entirely sure, whether it was due to overwatering or a cold shock. I just let it dry out and put the see through pot on a plate, so that the roots would be able to do a tiny bit of photosynthesis. Then I waited. When the media has finally dried, I only sprayed it with water to begin with. After apx 2-3 weeks it started to grow a new leaf. I then started to water it like usual (whenever the roots are dry/white). By now, the second one is coming :)

I loved your explanation and actually subscribed today. Anyway, if the videos are this long it’s going to be difficult for me to watch them to the end. Thanks 🙏🏻

Speed up the video. You can try different speeds. It helps if you are in a time crunch.

I’ve had my phal since November and she is very happy and I haven’t repotted her! She’s also starting to rebloom... is it necessary? Last time I repotted my orchid I killed it, badly.

Hi, repotting is necessary when the medium is in bad condition, or there are roots dying, or the pot or medium are not adequate for your environment :) or just if you want to repot into a medium you like and know how to use ;) orchids don't die from repotting, unless the repotting wasn't done properly, or the orchid was hiding a disease. Is it possible that the phal has stem rot? The leaves seem to be yellowing from the crown

Hi Danny. Needed this also. Perhaps I'm spazzy but seem to have more problems with phals rerooting than catts or dendrobiums. Hope to see your little guy do well soon.

Hehe it's statistics, what do we buy more? Phals? 😁 I actually did not have a rootless phal in years until these 2 :))) but I bought more Catts 🤣

@@MissOrchidGirl Yup, very good possibility. Or perhaps phals don't have such a good backup system as the others. Cattleyas usually have buds on the pseudebulbs as the dendrobiums and oncidiums. Though these can lose their roots seems to be able to grow new ones more easier if conditions are adequate. But phals seems to be more prone to root rot as well as the stem. Being a newbie of a bit over a year is my experience. But thank you for your infectous influence to try new and different orchids.

Oh yeah stem rot is rampant with Phals, it's ok if Catts lose a pseudo bulb or two. That is the weakness of the monopodial, what to do :) when it comes to bad roots... I have some Catts that gave me bad memories 🙄

Dear Danny I need help. I recently purchased a cattleya Chantilly Lace and I see that the media presents moody fungus and the roots are getting darker. The time to repot is not ideal since no new roots are emerging from the growth (it is maturing at the moment). So I do not know what to do but I do not want to loose the plant. What would you do? Thank you in advance

i think phals may simply not be for me... i have 3 one has no roots (grocery store phal) another has no leaves (phalaenopsis tetraspis) and the other (mini phal) is dehydrated,,, but blooming

Hi Danny, I have noticed these little flies that sit on the bark of my orchid pots. They look almost like fruit flies. Should I be worried?

I also have it as well. I have noticed that I had a few orchids with stem rot. Could these fly's spread it? Are these fly's able to spread disease? I also have other house plants and I am getting concerned that rot could effect them as well. If anyone knows what these fly's are would be a great help.

Could you please send me your email. I bought a Phalaenopsis and it seems it got root rot from the media they were grown it. I realised it after repotting it. I cut off the infected parts and I followed your instructions in your videos but it seems it's not improving. I would like to show you how my phalaenopsis looks like. I really need your help since I've tried everything and it seems it's not working.
