The difference between nerds and the hood dudes was that they was they was playing sports and in the streets. The hood dudes was the ones that taught me how to PLAY Pokemon!

I went through exactly the same thing in High school. Expect it was multiplied by 10. They liked anime and all those shows but kept me out of the conversations on purpose. Good thing was there were others I chilled with that helped make it better. Remember guys there will always be fellow lions out there amongst the sheep.

Honestly, I was that person who was surprised at everyone around me who watched Anime since I didn't watch it until now that I'm in my 20s lol

What funny about this is the fact that some of this stuff happened to me when I was younger and people were very hostile when it came to those who listen to rap and those who didn’t.

I was more of a history nerd obsessed with HOI4 and i talked about history so much because, tbh it's actually really interesting. I would talk nonstop about it back in HS and to my shock, noone even knew what ww2 and 9/11 were. But my passion for history also makes me an assassins creed nerd. HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU PLAY HEARTS OF IRON 4 BTW, I cannot overstate that enough.

Being a anime fan in the late 90’s / early 2000’s was complete hell. The roasting can get severe.

Nah this is so true, I got back from AnimeNYC a few days ago and I had the time of my life and it randomly got me thinking growing up as a kid in the 90s to the early 2000s and being a nerd, especially a BLACK nerd SUCKED! Unless you were into that hood shit and only that hood shit, everyone really found you lame for liking something that couldn’t potentially get you arrested. Now I can walk down the street in my cosplay and no one says a thing! Some even know who I am, but big ups to bro for standing on what he liked had the cool sheep reevaluating their lives🤣🤣

0:30 You were most likely from the suburbs. I used to live in NY Brooklyn, But during my Sophomore year I moved to Long island. I also Went to the Highschool there (I didn't like the suburbs one bit/ *BUGS* ). Fr one of my good friend I met in highschool liked anime too! It was the best to finally have someone I know like the same thing as me. He even watched a lot and not just Narruto. We used to practice Japanese together on our walk home and it was just super nice to talk to someone who was on the same page as me. We stopped talking sometime during college cause he was really far away and had another life of his own so we just naturally stopped chatting. Even though it’s been years I hope he’s doing well and happy

Going into middle school i dropped from 230 to 180 and was cut so i threw away all the things i liked that werent sports related because i finally wanted to be popular. When school started i joined every sport i could so people would think i was cool. It worked but i lost a lot of joy in life. When i graduated i was locked up bc the only things i enjoyed at that point in my life was being fucked up and banging. Im 24 and still struggling with addiction and i can almost guarantee if i wouldve just been myself and enjoyed what i enjoyed my life would be a lot different. My point is dont lose yourself trying to impress anyone else bc it will effect you for years to come

I had experiences like that anime one but I was a lowkey nerd. I’d nerd out in class but be hanging around the gang members outside of class (lunch and free blocks)

Sheesh in my school (2000-2009) 99% of the boys in junior highschool were non-stop yugioh Card players. There would be competition for days at lunch. Kids didn’t cosplay much back then because you had to DIY the costume. We could only find a Naruto headband. Pokémon wasn’t just a story but a lifestyle. I do feel bad a lot people felt isolated during those times depending where you live it wasn’t popular. Now it has expanded worldwide. I hope you pop out one day to a anime convention Devonte so I can outshine your cosplay.

The only reason i never gotten messed with for watching anime was because i stood on business and also was one of the very few plugs in school who took change like we used to sit in the far dark corner of the cafeteria or in the bathroom counting change

Middle school up to sophomore year of high school is basically the Proving Grounds for children. Best and most brutal years for social development.

I also get bullied in general and for liking anime since elementary, middle, and high school. Today, people only like anime when famous celebrities like it. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I'ma keep it a whole band. I grew up in the hood. The hood hood. The "make the local news every few months for something ridiculous" hood. We ALLLLL fw dbz. In fact, when dbz was on was probably the safest time in our hood. Didn't matter what was happening. Everything shut down like it was a lunch break, with no staggered coverage. No one getting pressed. No work being flipped. No iron slung. Nothing. Anyone that was around at that time would confirm. 😂

Devonte The One I KNOW 100% Exactly what you mean. I was born 1982 and I was literally the only Nerd in my 2 neighborhoods of Fairlawn and Anacostia of SE Washington DC. in the 80 and first half of the 90s there were drive byes, shootouts and police raids all around me. Most people were interested in Either Rap, Football, Basketball, street fights, getting laid, drunk, high or both. The few people who played games only played Madden (or NFL Blitz), Mortal Kombat (or street Fighter), NBA Live (or Jam), and after Xbox and PS2 FPS became the next major game other than sports and fighting. Very Few and I mean Very Few were interest in RPG, Action Adventures or other genre unless it was heavily marketed. Most people I know had their first and often only RPG experience was Final Fantasy VII. The only anime that people in my age group watch back then where the bloody and gory verity like Vampire Hunter D, Akira or Heavy Metal. IT was weird that Pokémon and Digimon did catch on though but that was much later like late 90 early 2000. Strang that you as a 90's Kid should have seen more of our community into Video Games and Anime as the Playstation then later XBox were the Catalysts to bringing the Video Game Culture in my Neighborhood.

Devonte the looks around as he is transported to a forest on an Earth like planet. He sees trees towering high above him, their branches heavy with leaves that rustle in the wind. The air is moist, the ground beneath his feet is soft and damp. As he takes his first steps, he feels a strange sensation in his body, as if his reality is being stripped away. Devonte looks down at his hands and sees that they are no longer his own. "No,what is this?!?!?, where am I?" He says out loud to no one as the trees sway and groan in the wind. Devonte looks around, trying to get his bearings. The forest is dense and dark, with shadows and thick underbrush. He can hear the sounds of animals in the distance, but he can't see anything. Looking into the sky he smiles. "Let's make it a little brighter out here." He says snapping his fingers.... The dark sky above remains dark as a tiny burst of electricity leaks from his finger and fizzles out. Devonte looks around, trying to find something to make him feel more at home. He spots a tree with strange markings etched into its bark and walks towards it. Stopping suddenly he looks around. "Wait a minute. This feels like some wrong turn portal edition and my powers are all jacked up." He thinks as a twig snaps in the distance. Devonte looks around, trying to locate the source of the sound. He sees movement. Trying to light the way he is able to make a ball of energy . He steps forward, his eyes scanning the area for any signs of danger. A squirrel slowly crosses the path ahead of him and he relaxes watching it. Suddenly a large claw slams down in the animal and snatches it into the darkness. Devonte quickly jumps away and runs in the other direction until he grows tired. Stopping in the hollow of a large tree he stays there until he falls asleep. Waking with light shining into his eyes Devonte jumps up as hooves clatter in the dirt nearby. A man a few feet away stands relaxed but ready as Devonte takes a fighting stance. The man holds out a hand. "No need for that here. I'm Blaze, king of Redemption. I've heard a lot about you Devonte the One. You've got quite the reputation..... Now it seems fate brought you here." He says turning around. " if you wish to be a real hero follow me. If not you can go back to your multiverse." Blaze climbs into a carriage and leaves the door open...
