You can spend many hours on the oculus quest 2 enjoying the improved resolution and fun gameplay. All this fun, can cause some serious eye strain and dry eyes while playing VR. There are certain tips and tricks that can help with these issues. First thing is to match your IPD with the Ocular Quest 2 IPD. The Oculus Quest 2 has 3 settings, and sometimes this can create an issue if your IPD doesn't match the settings. Dr. EyeGuy will help you fix the IPD issue. Oculus Quest 2 has a Night Mode option (Blue Filter) to reduce blue light. This can potentially help reduce digital eye strain, as well as help with your sleep. Oculus Quest makes eye inserts for prescription lenses, as well as inserts for extra Blue Light filters. You should also wear your own prescription lenses with a blue block filter to help with eye strain.

    It would be interesting to compare the optical qualities of the Q2 vs higher end headsets as some of them can be adjusted much more precise (stepless IPD, eye relief, some even have separate hardware and software IPD) to your particular needs. Would love to hear an expert's opinion on these health aspects.

    @@DrEyeGuy I'd watch that for sure! Would also be interesting so see whether headsets with canted displays and lenses produce any negative effects (Valve Index has 5° outward per eye, Pimax headsets have about 20° per eye so they can have a huge field of view, but very little stereo overlap). Vive Pro 2 has a straight optics assembly but stacked fresnel lenses, also an interesting setup.

  • @huddybuddygreatness9309

    @huddybuddygreatness9309

    2 жыл бұрын

    It’s funny that you say the “higher end headsets” are the ones with step less IPD adjustment, because the original Oculus Quest, which is what I have, does have stemless IPD adjustment. My IPD is 62 and in the quest one you can choose any IPD value within the range. Idk why they chose to get rid of that, also I think it’s dumb that it only comes in white, so hopefully the next quest gets the best of both

  • @mhe0815

    @mhe0815

    2 жыл бұрын

    I also still have an OG Quest but not the 2. Reason why they canned stepless IPD adjustment is to enable usage of a single larger display panel rather than the 2 separate ones in the Quest 1. All so it is cheaper to make. With a single panel and the 3 IPD notches you switch between software profiles that just offset the displayed content on the fixed panel. Creating that in a seamless manner would be a pain in the rear for software development. So they simplified it to the point of making it borderline unergonomic for a lot of people. Simply because it won't matter to the masses who are not deep into the subject matter. The fact that VR may have some direlong term consequences for kids below the age of 12 but them marketing it mostly towards kids anyway pretty much tells you what you need to know about the Q2 and the people making it.

    I’ve had my Oculus quest 1 and I’ve noticed a difference. Before I had it I didn’t need glasses but maybe after a year I got glasses to help see things further away (also blue light glasses). Ever since I got them I’ve always used them playing the oculus or on my computer. Things further away are MUCH clearer to see and I still find it crazy on how much the difference is. My eyes still get dried up from time to time but I’m working on that. Thanks for the tips!

    Great advice Doc, my eyeballs thank you! I learned another trick that helped me with eyestrain\dryness on the Quest 2 (not sure if medically accurate but it helped me), here goes: So after your put on and line up the headset, I would pull it out to the front just a bit (i.e. just enough that it's not applying pressure on my cheeks), I would then literally close my eyes and seat the headset back into position - that's it! I found that it reduced that eyelid stretching sensation and allowed me to blink much easier while wearing the headset. Just my 2 cents, hope someone finds it useful :)

    This video is great! It really helped me understand how to use my vr headset correctly. I recently purchased a vr headset that should be arriving soon, so this video had perfect timing. I do have a small question though. So you were talking about how blue light can mess up my sleep pattern especially when using something that emits blue light before going to sleep. I’ve heard this sentiment before in a lot of other videos so I thought I should ask you this question since you are a professional. For some reason whenever I use my phone before bed or play games before bed, while it’s true that I don’t feel tired (probably due to lack of melatonin) I still almost instantly fall asleep when going to sleep. So my question is: why? Is it because I have a blue light absorbing superpower? Could it be that I’m an android sent by Cyberlife? Or is there a more scientific explanation? If you happen to see this comment, I would be more than happy to hear your explanation.

  • @DrEyeGuy

    @DrEyeGuy

    2 жыл бұрын

    For sure you are an android sent by cyberlife. 😄 This is actually a really good question. You may be able to fall asleep just fine. I would wonder how restful your sleep is. I wonder if you have less REM sleep than you would if you didn't use your phone. Maybe it just affects your deep sleep and not necessarily your ability to fall asleep?

    I'm not sure if the stock face cover's foam loses it's "springy" nature over time. I've had my Quest 2 since December, and when I went to use it after a few months of not, I found that there was a slight blurriness to everything. Not a lot but enough to be annoying. My lenses are not scratched as I baby my quest. I cleaned my lenses thinking that they were oily, which they weren't. I made sure that the lenses were the correct distance apart and they were. Then I pulled the quest from my face slowly only to discover that it cleared right up being slightly away from my eyes (around the thickness of the foam). It did NOT affect my field of view at all. That made me wonder if it was always like that of new after being worn out or something. Today I bought a new face cover from Amazon and should be here Sunday. My hope is that it's thicker then the stock cover, allowing that distance that I need for a clear picture. If you are experiencing similar issues, maybe consider trying to pull the quest away from your face slightly. The thickness of the foam may be all you need. If you find that clears thing up, then you should consider finding after market cover that's thicker than the stock one, or find something that will extend the stock cover's foam allowing for distance.

    So I just got my Meta Quest 2 almost two weeks ago and I've been trying to figure out how to get the correct setting for the IPD. I kept switching it from the middle and largest setting. I wasn't sure which was best but thanks to the advice you gave I found out my IPD is 64.5 so I'm using the 63 now. Now aware of this I'm able to see the slight difference and I want to say thank you. Now to continue trying to figure out the other issues like that annoying sound when I'm connected to my computer using the program that makes me feel like I'm in the Matrix. Thanks again.

    Interesting advice, all common sence. I've been into VR since the Vive came out, spent 100's of hours in VR, never had eye strain, then I make sure the headset is balanced with a weight at the back, I blink often, and I take breaks. I've never and will never use an Oculus Quest, mostly because it is linked to Facebook and I don't want advertisement in my games, and I have a large IPD 75mm and the 68mm it goes too is too small. The only HMD's I've found that cater for large IPD's are Vive and Vive Pro (out of production now) and the Pimax range (I have an 8KX and it is the best I have used). The HP Reverb G2, Vive Pro 2, and Valve Index are all restircted to 68 to 70mm IPD, which I find disappointing.

    Does the VR system and consecutive time spent in front of a TV contribute to Astigmatism? Everyone has been Bit©hing at how my very slight inability to focus two images together has been from every lick of technology I have for myself. It hasn't gotten worse over time with use of technology though, and the image produced from my vision is still sharp from all distances. There's just a very faint double seen from greater distances.
