This was so helpful I can’t thank you enough!!! Mom called me stranded, and needed the car for work tomorrow. Luckily I saw this video, it convinced me I could do it, and gave it a try. Fortunate to have the right tools, and heated garage mid winter. I was able to remove the starter in less then 1 hour thanks to your tips, from jacking up, to pulling the starter. 1+ install. Not Easy to get the starter bolts (14mm) without wobble socket. But after those two bolts are out/in it’s a 12mm nut on the power wire, and you can drop it out the front side of the trans mount. 👍💪👊 Do not pull the drive shaft for the 4x4 transfer case it’s not needed!

I just bought a 2005 Grand Cherokee earlier tonight and was told the starter needed to be replaced. And watching this video is very helpful.

Thank you Jim, years later and your video just saved me a ton of work! I had the starter out in 30 min instead of thinking it would be a half day job dropping the shaft like all the other videos I watched first...

it was intimidating to think of removing the drive shaft and I was going to take it to the dealer because I was insecure I could do it. But I ran into your video and although it took 3 hours, I changed the starter on my wife's 2009 Cherokee today. Thanks a million for posting!!!

Thanks for the tip! I had to change the starter on my wife’s Jeep, in the freezing cold. Not having to remove the drive shaft in the bitter cold made it go much quicker

Wow! Extremely helpful! The starter mounting bolts on my 2010 were 16mm. Wouldn’t have thought the starter could be maneuvered in that tight space… it did! Thank you! Oh, wobble joint for the extension to get to the mounting bolts, and a 13mm shorty wrench for the cable connection.

Saw this video and it made me consider cancelling my appointment at the mechanic for this job! Once I saw the driveshaft was involved, I thought it was beyond me. Now I am actually going to attempt it myself first!

Jim, that trick worked again. My daughters 2007, liberty, 3.7, starter failed. I called around and the shop here wanted over $ 500.00 !!! I played dumb and asked them why so much and they said they had to remove the forward drive-shaft, drop the exhaust manifold and even drop the oil pan to gain access ?. Watched your video again and sure enough, it came right out. I think it was even easier than when I did it on my 2006 commander. Thanks, again. Ron

Thanks for the video. I'm about to change the starter on a friend's Cherokee now. I knew that taking out the shaft wasn't really necessary.

Friend of mine needs her starter replaced. I'll be doing it on the ground, and wasn't looking forward to fighting with the driveshaft there. Thanks a lot!

Dude thanks for actually giving a nice camera shot and angle of where the damn thing is. Most people will make a 20 minute long video about working on a starter and just cut the edit right up next to it as if the type of people who look at these videos will even know where it is or how to get to it.

Wonder how many 'dishonest' mechanics would tell you that they had to remove drive shaft just to overcharge you. This is a great video from an 'honest' mechanic. Thank you!
