Summer of 1972, graduated from grammar school, and starting Freshman year of Highschool come September. Forced bussing just starting. What a first two years of highschool I was about to have. Riots for about 2 years or so. People tryin to stop the bussing. In 2023, race relations pretty much as volatile. I never would have believed it. I know this whole album by heart. I can sing every word. It's inside of me. Real life problems between Father and Son, leads to tragedy. Marvin lost. I sometimes wonder what music of his would have followed. Rest in Peace, Marvin 💙🎗️🕊️✨

J Henderson, Marvin What's Going On album is a superlative endeavor, indeed. The tracks entitled Save the children and God is love are Nice! It's interesting, however, that many feel as you expressed... that he's the Greatest Of All Time. It's nice to know that Marvin is asleep as brought out in the bible book of Ecclesiastes 9:5. Then he will be resurrected again according to the Bible book of Acts 24:15. It is interesting however that the son of God, Jesus Christ, will be assigned by his Father to do the judging again according the Holy Scriptures or Bible at Matthew 25:33 ..where he ... will put the SHEEP on his right, but the GOATS on his left. The point is that while Marvin Gaye was indeed a good vocalist, the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) doesn't Marvin.

Marvin’s handlers never wanted him to do these message songs but Marvin did it anyway. Thank God. These types of songs were his very best. The moguls in the music industry didn’t GET IT. That’s Why Marvin went to Belgium for over a year. He was fed up.

I'm from the Bay Area and was residing there when the What's Going On, and Let's Get On albums were released. Yeah prior to the release of those two master pieces by MPG, I though, a kid, also enjoyed other melodies and ballads such as his collaboration with the late Tammy Terelle and can even vaguely remember listening to Pide & Joy, Stubborn Kinda fellow, and Hitch be Hike on Motown's Tamla label. But in terms of lacking the insight you shared, I never knew that MPG took a sabbatical of refuge overseas in another country for an entire year!

Listening to Marvin music today; it hasn't failed the music industry and it hasn't failed society. It will to be played and listen to by all generations for many years to come. Marvin Gaye was a Godsend. His music is a blessing to our souls. As someone wrote he left us with enduring gifts. Good looking too. He was a winner 💯% without a doubt. He was concidered to be a rebel of secular music of his time., Going against the grain. With such a silky smooth voice the music producer's wanted him to be what they wanted him to be, . MLW, may I please ask you a question to ponder or think about regarding friendship or being considered a friend of another? Can two people be friends if the hardly know each other? Or can two people have different understandings of the definition or meaning of friendship and still be considered "friends? Or if two individuals have lifestyles that the other does not condone, can they still be considered friends? Also, does knowing another person for a long time - years - does that automatically make them "friends"? Believe it or not, many people around the world have different meanings/ideas of what comprises true friendship. Contrary to what many people around the world believe, GOD is not friends with everyone, especially those who haven't learned what God Iike's and doesn't like, and why. I've learned that friendship is a mutual arrangement. So if one person considers another to be a friend, yet the other person doesn't feel the same way, then there is no friendship. Real talk.

Marvin was the best to ever do it, hands down! But what many don't know is that Marvin didn't write the lyrics to his many outstanding songs, although I'm sure he collaborated with Leon Ware who came up with the lyrics. Marvin did however do all the vocals. Lead, background, and any voice that you hear is all Marvin. He was a genius...ahead of his time. Creating background melodies with his bad self. He was the only voice. So friggin amazing. There will never be another Marvin!

Seems like his music,lyrics and messages may be more applicable now than ever !

Ms Jeanette, I too enjoy listening to this song and the entire album. I vividly recall when it was released in 1971. Lyrics are important to truly listen to and comprehend more so than the melody, beat, etc Many songs are DEBASING. If back then when listening to such volcalist as the Dramatics, Bobby Womack, Johnny Taylor, Wilson Picket, the Temptations, etc, many of their songs had wonderful musical production. Yet the lyrics were another story. In Marvin's song " all he ask of us is to give each other Love. Do you know that a plethora of Humans around the world do not accurately know what the virtue of Love actually is? An individual who truly knows what the virtue of LOVE is should therefore know what the types of LOVE are, the origin of LOVE, the epitome of LOVE is, and most importantly what the Personification of LOVE is.

During that time there WAS LOVE in the NEIGHBORS, People danced in the streets from the music because it blared out of the Windows of the MAJORITY of homes. It was those Beautiful summer days and nights. You could party without being threaten. There was Nothing but Love and joy no matter what folks were going through. The smell of Fried Chicken, Collard greens and you knew That Potato Salad was also on the menu. Folks would invite you into their homes just to eat,get your Lil drink on and party! It was a beautiful time with Beautiful people. I had to replace the album twice because I wore the vinyl off of it. Now I have the disk and CDS. My how I long for those good times but there gone and I THANK GOD that me and the people that enjoyed those had and still treasure them. This Album should be in every home because it told of the times then back in 1971 and now. Nothing has CHANGED ESPECIALLY FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR. MARVIN WAS BEFORE HIS TIME AND LEFT A LEGACY. Same here. Marvin was such a gifted man. His pain was deep. And he just didnt know how to cope with what he saw. So much injustice, sorrow and inequality. It hurt him and so he.did what people do till this day. He used drugs to rscape.

We definitely hope so, Satans wrath was on Marvin. I pray the Lord has mercy on his soul. He certainly was not with Jesus when he passed. Only God knows if he repented before he died. Marvin was handsome very talented and knew about God. May the Lord have mercy on his soul once again.🙏🏻Amen

This was Marvin’s vision. If this album turned out the medley that he wanted this would be the greatest piece of work of the 20th century. It sucks that Berry Gordy put a governor on that.
