Another reason to not melt your copper pennies is because they are a proven commodity. You can prove that it is a penny and made of copper. As a copper lump you would have to have it assayed to prove what it is. Why go through the trouble of melting them then?

Eric Barron I find many CRH and I also pick up some in change now and again. Always check coin stars when you see them and ya know those little trays at the store when you pay that usually have pennies in them; I always check those for copper and exchange zinc for them- I have found quite a few that way!

Your math was a bit off as you forgot that the pennies are 95% copper (not 100%). It takes 154 pennies to get 1 pound of copper which would make the copper value per penny just over 2 cents each. Great video, just wanted to make the small correction for you. Happy Hunting.

You really should consider weighing ALL your pennies for copper because there have been a very rare few that have been found in copper on later dates than there are supposed to have been made and they are very valuable. If you have a coin scale and get used to doing it, it takes a split second each to weigh them.

Started watching today and found nothing of interest in my junk drawer at home (full of change). At work today I did find '1999 $5 🌟 and '2013 1$ 🌟 . I purchased both plus all the copper pennies i found and older stuff . Thank you for feuling my ocd'ness . I plan on saving anything that looks wrong or too shiney. Overall I exchanged about $9 from my till but feel confident in doing so . In doing that I grabbed what my be a proof quarter , 44 nickel and a few other cool coins . A coworker asked what i was doing and told her .... Asked me to look at what she had and was amazed (sadly , she had more money in her pocket than i have in savings ) 2 x 100 star notes consecutive (2013 i think) ... Buy the end of the day I found only one penny log cabin 2009 . Curse you (kidding) for making me atart this 10 years late !

Before I watch this video, I would say the last year pennies were copper was 1981 because even though there were copper pennies in 1982, some 1982 pennies have zinc in them.

The Secretary of Treasury could decide to lift the melting ban, especially since the government recently declared copper to be a strategic metal. Also, copper pennies can be melted to make things such as artwork, tools, pots and pans - just not solely for its monetary value. The cost of melting is not profitable for most people yet, but with copper value increasing and the utility of the penny declining, it is a distinct possibility that the USA will follow Norway's lead and simply stop producing pennies.

I don't see it as cost affective to melt them down with propane maybe with used motor oil burner I still think they're worth more as a coin down the road but ya just fun to collect I haul copper sometimes from mines sometimes in plate form sometimes raw ore like little flakes in big bags one time I had an MT trailer to pick up a load at walmart we need to sweep out are trailers so they're clean to be loaded and I'm sweeping out this trailer it's dark in the front can't see but I'm thinking geez this stuff is heavy ends up its copper ore they holed a bag with the forklift over 50 pounds I still have it was keep it or through it in the dumpster imagine if it was gold still bit expensive to melt it into bars be kind cool hobby but ya

You're stating that in 1943 the penny got smaller please clarify your statement of saying a 1943 steel penny is smaller or does it weigh less could you clarify. Are you measuring it or are you weighing it. please clarify your unit of measure, and if you would standardized it throughout your video. 🤥 The last time I checked steel does not weigh what copper does.

I just reached 2500 copper pennies today, January 18, 2018, since I started saving them separately from zinc pennies. We should also save zinc pennies as their current metallic value is about 87 percent of the face value.

I have about 2850 copper pennies as of today. I have been rolling them up as I go which is why I know how many I have and I have a bank box full. I cashed in the nickels and the zinc pennies (about $40.00 total) a few days ago because I needed the money. Still have the copper pennies and I still also have the Louisiana Purchase nickels and Lincoln's 200th birthday pennies from 2009, about $2.00 worth.

I reached 3,000 copper pennies yesterday, April 3, 2018. I also have 51 Lincoln 200th birthday pennies, 30 Louisiana Purchase nickels, 8 bicentennial quarters and a two dollar bill. I also have just over 500 zinc pennies and 63 nickels. That's just over $44 in total. I also have 75 wheat pennies, 3 of which are 1943 steel pennies.

Thank you for calling them 'cents.' America has NEVER minted a penny. I love sifting through my change for these beauties, never went to the bank for rolls. I think there's a good chance that the dollar will collapses, due to over printing. If it does, the copper cents just might go to face value on a new gold/silver standard. Imagine: 100 copper cents for a constitutional silver dollar, 140 copper cents for an American silver eagle, or even better, 5,000 copper cents for a gold eagle or buffalo!
