"They're not like you and me, which means they must be evil." Damn, a Disney movie just summed up the reason of most of our wars and problems in a song.

Disney movies are often deep. Cinderella was about percervernce conquers all. Beauty and the beast was that everyone has a little good in them. Hunchback was don't judge a book by it's cover. Yea there are some dumb ones but some of the deepest stories in history are directed toward kids.

While slightly romanticised, Pocahontas (this bit in particular) is a prime example of the tragic violence born of misunderstanding. The colonists and native Americans both were totally unfamiliar with each other, and only fought out of fear of the unknown.

Cause honestly you don’t get anywhere by only putting the blame on one group without knowing the full context.

@@Sakura-jf3ll a month ago, word got out that Disney next predator movie was going to be set in the old west and that a Comanche woman would be the lead to kill the predators….there is one fatal flaw, Native Americans that weren’t Comanche were pissed off because they don’t want Comanches shown in a positive light because of what they did to not only native Americans but other races as well. I found out that the Comanches did terrible things and Disney want to make them the Heroes?!

I'm first native, and I love my white friends. I don't hate them because of something their ancestors did to my ancestors, decades before I was even born. Ancestors, by the way, that I know nothing about or have no attachment to. To hold grudges, is to spit in the faces of the fallen. The ones who died, probably died wanting to put an end to this kind of hatred, to this kind of bigotry. Yet self righteous little social justice warriors have the arrogance to walk all over that history. If only our ancestors were alive today to see some of this behavior. Fucking disgraceful. Interviewer: "How do we get rid of racism?" Morgan Freeman: "Stop talking about it."

This song really fits the unforgiving, hateful, cruel nature of war. Especially the sky becoming BLOOD RED during the song, reflecting the seething rage and hate burning in each other's hearts and the HORRORS that will follow suit from the war. All set up to a thunderous, hate-filled drum music and both the Natives and the Settlers yelling their verses with mutual grudge. It all ends with Pocahontas' big, desperate: "NO!" as she rushes up in time to save her lover from his would-be execution, only after this song climaxed in a crescendo of burning fury, convincing her father to put a stop to all of this madness in order to prevent its grim, horrid outcome for both factions.

I hope that everyone will do the same and also look into the real story and understand both sides with an open mind and know why Disney took a lot of the truth out.

As long as they know the rest of the story that happens literally two to five minutes after this song ends I wouldn't particularly care. Kinda like how people who play shooting/murder games don't actually go out and murder people. You just have to make sure to show the whole story/let them know what is what and the penalties for their actions. :3

Then the englishmen sing 'they must be *evil*' which means they were never going to give them a chance like the indians would've if they just peacefully introduced themselves? I dunno, i need to just listen to the song and rekindle my childhood memories

I'm saying that Americans are constantly blamed for taking away Indian lands, when the Europeans did it before us and in greater numbers. French and English settlers ripped apart Indian Territory in Canada and the North American continent even though the French and Indians had a great relationship. Then you had the Spanish come to South and Central America and go on a murdering rampage through out the continents. Not to mention Florida, Texas, New Mexico, California, and Arizona.

Every time I hear of one side against each other, of Western ways of life against Eastern ways of life, of people who drum up war, I think of this song.

Ethnic conflict doesn't happen because we misunderstand people who are "different from us." It happens because of competition over limited resources. In this case, the Anglo settlers raided the Powhatan settlements for food and converted Native farmland and hunting grounds into tobacco plantations, and the Natives wanted to continue living on that land as they had done for generations. There were no "misunderstandings," only conflicts of interest. Societies go on to create an "us and them" mentality in order to justify behavior that would otherwise be obviously unjust, so we can all go on believing that we're good people despite doing terrible things. I guess it would be harder to make a Disney song about that.

My sociology professor said that this song is an example of how we institutionalize hate towards Native Americans. He read us the first verse, emphasizing what the white man said. He skipped over the Native American verse and call and response part. SMH cherry picking a Dinsey song to try and tell people that society works in a certain way

+CaptinHavoc1 College professors, am I right? I can't tell you how many times I run into that sort-of cherry picking nonsense from my professors. My sociology professor was the same way. She would make statements that were essentially opinions from one (usually uneducated) point of view without even acknowledging the others side and claim it was true. It made me so mad, but I need a good grade in that class so I just had to grit my teeth and bare with it.
