Hey you. Reaction, well done. As a native German, I always get a bit nervous , when I see a reaction to this song. It's a very personal song to me as a German. First time I watched it, I was shocked, because it stroke a nerv, how most of us Germans feel when it comes to our country. There are lots of things, we like about our country, but with all the other crap, we've done, it's makes it really hard not to damn it at the same time. The song/video came out in 2019, which wasn't on accident. With the refugee crises and the again 🙄 uprising right wing nationalism, Rammstein wanted to make a statement how pissed and frustrated they feel about it (And I do). That's why most of historical images are showing all the shitty stuff that happened in our country's past. And of course, we get most of the symbolsm shown right away. The beautiful black woman represents Germania throughout our history. What dominant role the church had. (Fortunately not anymore). The red laser represents the red thread throughout history. I'm sure other subscribers will give you more details to the images shown in the video. Another great song by Rammstein is "Feuer und Wasser". There is no video, but I can drop you a link with English translation. With love from Germany 🤘😎

I know what you mean. The first time I saw this video, it made me feel sick. After a couple of times I realized how good it describes how I feel about my country in general. And I'm also always a bit nervous when foreigners react to this, because I'm afraid they get it all wrong. But I'm glad when they watch this with english subtitles like he did here. What bothers me a bit is, that a lot of foreigners totally focus on the nazi part. But theres so much more in this video. Ancient times, germans vs romans, medieval times, the church, the iron wall, communism, cold war, leftwing terrorism by the RAF, and all of that. German history has so much to offer, not just WWII and Nazis. But that's why we are here and can explain. 😉 And even most germans don't get a lot of the symbolism in this video. Like when germania breeds puppies. Germans are a nation of dog lovers. And we are famous for our breeds. But there is also an insult for germans "Köterrasse", "dograce".

I would like to describe our current german zeitgeist like that: The political and social mainstream in germany is in a love and hate relationship with this country. These lyrics describe it well. A lot of people don't feel comfortable with patriotism. I hope it doesn't sound arrogant, but I think germany is a lot more aware about it's historical guiltiness, compared to other countries. We learn about the holocaust und WWII at a very young age at schools, a lot of nazi symbolism like certain gestures, flags, symbols and even certain slogans are illegal, and handled like crimes. People go to jail for denial of the holocaust. We have a certain word for all of this in germany. "Vergangenheitsbewältigung", wich means something like "coping with the past". I would even say that "Vergangenheitsbewältigung" became a part of our culture for decades. Of course we still have nationalism, xenophobia and far rights, like in any other country. But these people are the minority. They blame "coping with the past" and call it "Schuldkult", wich means "cult of guiltiness". Some of them even still think, that germany is occupied by the allied forces. We even have a far right party again in our parliament, since 2017. But luckily they aren't strong enough to take part in our government. Of course they don't make it to obvious by not using nazi symbolism. Rammstein were often considered to be Nazis in our german media. I think this has to to with their martial presence, their harsh overpronounced language, and their rhythmical work, that reminds a lot of people of marching music. A lot of people are biased here. In fact Rammstein never had lyrical content that hinted anything like that. These are just artistic choices, but nothing political. Rammstein grew up in the socialist east, and emphasize more with the liberal left. They hinted that in their song "Links 2, 3, 4" back in 2001. That was their only political song for a very long time. Until "Deutschland". I think they wanted to make another statement, just because of the current zeitgeist, with the far right powers on the rise again in germany, all of europe, the US.... And they wanted to make clear that they don't support that. They even made a few surprising statements on stage when they were on tour for their current album. They made a refugees welcome statement, and even a pro LGTBQ statement live on stage in Russia. The black women in that video portrays "germania", who is a symbolic and mythical figure for germany. The queen of germany if you will. It's an odd choice that they choose a black woman for this, but I think this also is a statement, to show that we are an multiethnical country today. And of course to trigger some rightwing people. The colour black is also part of our current german flag, along with red and gold.

Hi, I'm from Germany. Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars. A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc. Missing in this video, because somebody cut it away from the original Video: The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too. Missing in this video, because somebody cut it away from the original Video: The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike). That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history. The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees. The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees). In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle. After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background). The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion. The falling banknotes in the prison are not about corruption. That is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation. One had to pay a loaf of bread with a handcart full of nearly worthless banknotes back then and it hit the German people deep down inside and in their souls. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers. The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket. This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain. A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp. The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses. The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man. The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification. Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp). The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams. Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example. The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events. PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany. PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages. In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it). But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war. The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened. PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too. PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII. PPPPPS: My interpretation of the glass coffin is Little Snow White in space, like I wrote before (Missing in this video, because somebody cut it away from the original Video) PPPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet. Finally: The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin. I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because: a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄 Recommendation for a reaction: The band / project "Die Krupps" and their song "Im falschen Land". Link to my favourite fan video of that song: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hqdhrNKee6e4oLQ.html Greetings Mega

Love your reaction. I wish you were able to see the whole music video though. The beginning scene explains where Till's severed head came from and the ending of the song we get to listen to a piano version of the song Sonne. I really love this video for multiple reasons. I'm not sure if most of the reactors caught the nods to their other music videos. (Like Mein Teil, Engel, Sonne, Du Hast, and even You're So Beautiful by Emigrate, which is Richard's solo project.) I don't think the monks were eating Germania alive, I think they were eating Germany's national dish off of her. If I'm not mistaken the band was using that as a metaphor, because the church was getting fat or profiting while the people below the table were barely getting scraps and struggling. I'd love to see you react to Emigrate or even Till's solo project Lindemann. Can't wait to see your next video.

There are lots of things in this song, here are some of the historical references in the video that I found... The female actress represents 'Germania' through the ages In the beginning we have the Germans tribes defeating Rome. The there is a scenes that refers to the Hindenburg accident The scene with Till dressed as woman is the R.A.F. The two guys boxing represent the infighting during the Weimar Republic. During the ww2 scene you can see Germania being blind on the 'right' side. The prison with the money falling from the sky represents the inflation problem they had between ww1 and ww2 The people awaiting their hanging have different stars: one is Jewish, one is a Jewish political prisoner, one is homosexual. The dogs she is giving birth to are a typical german breed that almost got extinct several time. The last time was during WWII. The dogs might represent a new Germany, kept clean of the past horrors, brought back from the brink like breed itself. (Just guessing here) The guys in their political party office is during the DDR. People throwing Molotov cocktails: The student insurrection of the 1960s. Burning of the books by the Nazis. Medieval warfare. Possibly a reference to the crusades. Monks tearing Germania apart and feasting on her: late medieval church & reformation wars. The short shot of a tank rolling: probably alluding to the events of June 17, 1953.

One thing you "missed" (well, it was hard to see the entire image there) was how when the monks were "eating" Germany (with several traditional foods being her organs) the people below were committing cannibalism. This is supposed to show the 30 Years War in late medieval Germany. A religious and later political war that saw massacres after massacres, caused famine, inflation and plague - killing 25-30% of the German population. At the end with multiple other kingdoms involved a peace was formed. A treaty that returned Germany to the political/religions status quo it had before. Yes, cannibalism was documented.

Plese watch the long version in private too, the intro is epic af and goes back even further, to the times when romans and germanic tribes fought each other and after a decisive battle all trees were full off hanged roman soldiers or cut of heads nailed into it at the ground. Also, this version, feel it, dont read lyrics parallel, just pay attention to all the details. Its worth it. (And i already told u that "Amerika" has a fire rammstein music video about US too, check it out!

Firstly, the black woman represents Germania, the spirit of Germany throughout the ages.At least that's what I get. And,yes,Til is speaking about a love/hate relationship with his country. Oh,and the puppies: Germania giving birth to the dogs of War,maybe. Well, you should have found the lyrics online and read them while watching the official version because this one cuts off the beginning set up for the rest of the video. Why the person who made this decided to cut it apart like that I cant figure. It begins there, with the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, described as the Varian Disaster by Roman historians. It took place at modern Kalkriese in 9 AD, when an alliance of Germanic peoples ambushed Roman legions and their auxiliaries, led by Publius Quinctilius Varus. The alliance was led by Arminius, a Germanic officer of Varus's auxilia.

Pretty much a historical video where "Ruby Commey" is depicting Germany. I personally found their showcase of 1900 to 2000 the most interesting, everything before that isn't relevant for me simply because in that time period there wasn't a country in the world that had a better track record. The Hindenburg disaster was a bit out of place for me as well (looks epic though). But the gruesome events led by several ideologies through 1900 to 2000 is what defines the song lyrics for me. Like the WW1/WW2 events led by authoritarian ideologies of the "Weimar Republic" and the "National Socialist Party" (Nazi's). And the less known events led by communist/socialist ideologies of the groups "German Democratic Republic" that split/divided Germany in half (famous for the Iron Curtain) and the "Red Army Faction" (also known as the Baader-Meinhof group and kinda resembles current day "Antifa") that got famous for almost 20~ years acts of terrorism with lots of bombs and assassination's (Germany taken hostage). The ending showing "Ruby Commey" (Germany) in space as a angel being dragged by Rammstein through fire, giving birth to puppies and then dying would suggest... "insert your opinion" :)

this video is loaded with historical references and offers millions of miles of space for interpretation. everytime I find something new. this time: today's German flag colours are black red and gold. but you hardly find red in the video apart from those red lasers. I think red represents violence and pain, e.g. red batons in the prison scene. but even if you dont know much about German history, pay attention to this: Ramstein plays a lot with the colors of the German flag: black - red - gold: democratic Germany black - white - red: Nazi & Kaiserreich black - white: holy roman empire (medieval times) apart from these colors others like green or blue dont appear at all.

For myself, I can say that I really enjoy living here! This Nazi thing was over 70 years ago, I personally don't feel addressed. We are a completely different generation. All in all, you can live a fantastic life if you do your part. And Till and Co. live a great millionaire's life in Germany and actually can't complain..My opinion..😉

I can only speak from my perspective obviously, but beinga native German is really weird. Like.. as a small child you grow up, not really thinking much about your country because you don't really understand much about it, but you're generally don't have a negative view of it. While growing up you learn tiny bits of what had happened in Germany before, but you don't really think much about it. Then once you're older, you go to school and you start reading history books, and everything just kinda goes downhill from that. You learn thing after thing and you just think "what the actual fuck has this country been doing?", and like the what the song talks about, you start evolving this love hate relationship. With each thing that you learn it seems like your pride towards your country goes down. That's why there's barely any German flags outside, because everyone thinks they might be seen as weird or something. Then you obviously also realize "wait, I had family that lived during those bad times, what if they did shitty things as well?".

True that 👍 I think it's important to explain. So people get to know that those people that were killed in concentration camps weren't only jews. So why is this important. Because people need to understand that no one is safe in a fascist society. That's why all different groups of people have to stick together and show solidarity. No matter what ethnic, what religion, wich kind of handicap or what kind of sexual identity they have. That's the only thing that really works against fascism. When different groups of people seperate from one another and don't care for any other interests but their own, the society get's unstable. Germans also died in concentration camps, Nazis were enemies of german people. Our country was kept hostage by them. We lived in permanent fear. There was nothing glorious about being a member of the so called "masterrace". And thankfully other nations fought with their lives to free us. Unfortunately the central council of jews in germany blamed this Rammstein video. They felt it would be inappropiate for the bandmember getting hung, wearing the yellow star. I think they did not understand that this was supposed to show solidarity.

Rammstein really uses a lot of symbols in this song. The real meaning only emerges with the lyrics and the video together. You really have to analyze it more closely and then you will understand the deeper meaning. In this song the Middle Ages, the time of the Romans, the GDR - these historical events are presented in different roles. Of course, the theme of the Nazi era and the persecution of the Jews is also addressed, although its presentation does not differ from the style of the other scenes. A constant in the entire video is a woman who appears as a personified Germany in the different epochs. If you know this woman is representing germany and looking to the video again you will see so much more. I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because: a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE! Sometimes as a victim, sometimes as a perpetrator. In the text there are also several sections that contradict each other, e.g. "Will love and damn you". Statements like these express Germany's good and bad sides on the one hand. One of the passages like "so young and yet so old". This means that German history began early. But through certain events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the founding of the GDR through which a new era began for Germany. "one can love you and yet hate you!" It is a question of whether you can be proud of your country or not. "Your love is a curse and a blessing. I cannot give you my love." Germany is aware of the good but also dark times and many see the dark times as so extreme that it is difficult to give your country your love and pride. I must have overlooked a few things in the video, but those are the parts that stand out. I was born and raised in Germany myself and feel the same when it comes to being proud of my country. As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany. They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages. it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it). The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened. he short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII. Here the lyrics in english: You (You have, you have, you have, you have) Have cried a lot (Cried, cried, cried, cried) Separated in spirit (Separated, separated, separated, separated) United in heart (United, united, united, united) We (We are, we are, we are, we are) Have been together for so long (You are, you are, you are, you are) Your breath's cold (So cold, so cold, so cold, so cold) The heart in flames (So hot, so hot, so hot, so hot) You (You can, you can, you can, you can) I (I know, I know, I know, I know) We (We are, we are, we are, we are) You (You stay, you stay, you stay, you stay) [Chorus] Germany - my heart in flames Want to love and damn you Germany - your breath's cold So young, and yet so old Germany! [Verse 2] I (You have, you have, you have, you have) I never want to leave you (You cry, you cry, you cry, you cry) One can love you (You love, you love, you love, you love) And want to hate you (You hate, you hate, you hate, you hate) Presumptuous, superior Take over, hand over/puke Surprise, invade Germany, Germany above everything [Chorus] Germany - my heart in flames Want to love and damn you Germany - your breath is cold So young, and yet so old Germany - your love Is a curse and a blessing Germany - my love I can't give you Germany! Germany! [Bridge] You I We All of you You (superior/overpowering, unnecessary) I (Übermenschen weary) We (The higher you climb, the further you fall) You (Germany, Germany above everything) [Chorus] Germany - your heart in flames Want to love and damn you Germany - my breath's cold So young, and yet so old Germany - your love Is a curse and blessing Germany - my love I can't give you Germany!
