Savage Impulse: Top Quality for an Affordable Price

Today I have the new Savage Impulse to test and review! We'll compare it to other straight pull bolt actions including the Heym SR30, the Mauser M96, and the Blaser R93. These are all great rifles, but the Savage Impulse is simply remarkable! It is quick, smooth, accurate and all in an attractive, unique looking package that gives you a comfortable military feel. I even demonstrate the Savage Impulse in action so make sure you stick around for the entire video! If you want more USOG content you can follow the links below. Thanks for watching!

Note that for the Big Game model, the 300 Win Mag and the 300 WSM actions are housed in receivers of a common length. There is no OA length advantage to the 300 WSM as you might expect (barrels are both 24"). This could tip the scale in favor of choosing the 300 Win Mag.

Great review on this gun. It really breaks format, it's refreshing to see and especially from this continent and made so well. The addition of the set trigger is genius. You really made a powerful endorsement for it where I otherwise would not have known anything about it you made us all experts. It also looks fantastic. For now it seems it's only available in limited chamberings, we'll have to see what they do.

Wow. The background is a nice change from the indoors and taking some shots in the examination or explanation of this rifle was a nice touch and I rather like it. This format production suits you well and I think the viewers appreciate it. The rifle is a breath of fresh air even though it's made of more modern materials. It's time we see these type of actions in N America more and its time manufactures start to consider ambi usage for the rifles. About time. The lockup looks like a strong design and there's much to like but one question I'd have with the ball bearing detent style lockup is how well it operates in dust, debris, and buildup. In freezing rain type or wet to freezing conditions it can lock up single shots and any action and I've experienced this a few times. My old Mauser 98 rifles and Ruger scout rifle have always been stellar in operating in this regard whereas some others weren't as good and I've built a fire to unthaw them. It would be interesting to see how moisture and the ball bearing lockup does in the cold.

I don’t shoot at game at extreme range but I love to shoot steel at extreme range. This rifle should be a good competitor to my benchrest rifle. I will use it for elk hunting in certain places and perhaps Alaska someday, Lord willing.

Intrigued by your thorough diversity yet again sir! I believe the name provided the bearings would be 'rollers'. Moving by leaps and bounds with their new impulse. I never thought I would see the day an American firm would enter the 'straight pull' bolt gun marketing niche for sporting rifles, and am not surprised Savage would be first to market one! 'Impulse', perhaps the name itself is reason to own one, considering impulsivness a core element of my character; spontaneity is a more responsible description (rationalization) a part of my demeanor. God willing the Savage ''Impulse'i will (God willing) the an addition to my little collection! Savage has already established its accuracy and product durability meets or exceeds that of any other over - the - counter sporting rifle. God bless you sir. Please excuse me. I became preoccupied with other activities and did not view your content 4 more more occassions during the week. Recently picked up a Savage model 12?..with the National Match profile ‘fat all the way round’ for $779.00. I couldn’t purchase a stock 40X profile gun for less than double that amount, and then it would be lugged, weighted and bedded anyway. I promised a very good friend that I would purchase a 40X type rifle to be used in the Palma qualifying matches from which the various teams will be selected. I nearly talked myself out of an opportunity to save $1,500.00 additional cost, the average for a similar gun ranging $1,900.00 - $2,250.00. I realized gas guns such as the M1A / M14 and perhaps to a lesser extent various AR platform rifles, induce barrel ware differantly, and at a faster pace than.bolt action match rifles, especially with headspacing. Since these 2 examples are U.S. military service rifles, they are the benchmark for guns authorized in composite National Match shooting events. So, I sent my good friend a message 2 evenings prior to ensure that purchase was arranged. Usually, such an option would only be available at more than twice the average market value. It may require a bit of searching, but the rifle has a 40X stock similar to those seen on many expensive small bore Olympic rifles or 300 meter free rifles. We checked out a Mossberg partially in error, but also because it was, unlike the Savage, new, under warranty and may have had the correct width (outside diameter of the barrel) length and twist. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite what it was advertised to be, although still a good rifle, not a match gun by any measure, new or not.

There are things I definitely like about the Heym, But here are things I like about the Impulse as well. I have to say the Heym has the edge aesthetically because I do love a slender rifle with a schnabble tip and the european cheekpiece is beautiful , At the same time the action on the Impulse is so rigid looking with the picatinney rail and the accutrigger is a fine looking rifle in it's own right.

I bought the Impulse Predator. I found the bolt operation was stiff and little scratchy. Before doing anything with it, I put on a movie and cycled the bolt an estimated 500 to 1000 times. The operation smoothed out to a satisfactory feel. I then removed the bolt and disassembled the rear cap portion. Starting with 1000 grit and then finishing with 2000 grit, I polished the only the parts that showed rub/scratch marks. The action operation before and after can be likened (albeit slightly exaggerated) to going from a Ruger American to my 30/40 Krag.

Now that you have explained it I'm trying to remember where I've seen this type of lock up before; not even sure if it was a rifle lock up. As I understand it, a tapered mandrel expands the ring of bearings into matching surfaces at the front of the receiver. It's a novel idea.

I've been waiting for your review of this rifle. Great job as usual. Finally a Savage with a proper extractor. I'm not really convinced straight pull bolts are noticeably quicker than turn bolt while hunting or aimed shooting. For one, it appears to have a longer bolt throw than short action turn bolts. One question, in these straight pull actions, how are they for primary extraction? Most turn bolts accomplish this in the last part of lifting the bolt handle, but I don't see any provision for this in the Impulse. Finally, I think it has an aluminum receiver which probably adds to the blocky look. Not as slim as the steel Heym receiver. As alway, great review. Thanks

I got one of these in .308 was skeptical of how I’d like it. Bore sighted it and fired it 8 rounds to sight it in, each time I got more familiar with the action. As for accuracy, was low 1st two shots (from bore sighting) then my mistake turning turret the wrong way and worked it up with the next three. Once on, put the last 3 in a spot the size of a dime. I really like the rifle the more I get familiar with it.

Hi Mike great review, was wondering if the savage has a true bottom metal or if it’s plastic. The SR30 is beautiful in comparison and so are the other European straight pulls I’ve seen you display , to bad savage can’t appeal to the eye as much as the wallet. They even dropped the model 14/114 from there line up. I truly believe savage could produce a higher end rifle and do very well in that market. If it was offered in blued steel and walnut and a true bottom metal I’d have one in my safe. Always a pleasure to watch your videos and great to see you are healthy and safe.

Thank you Dale : ) The magazine seems to have a sheet metal bottom and I'm with you - the distance between good and great is not so far - Savage could do anything they want to - and a rifle such as we know can be made - can still be made. Soon I'll make them myself. I know gun people value things differently from other consumers. God Bless.

I was wondering if the impulse action shared the same footprint as the model 10 because it would be good if they can use some of the aftermarket stocks and chassis available. Thanks for showing the action out of the stock. It's now apparent that it's a unique footprint.

Thank you sir for sharing so many cool and often forgotten rifles. I thouroughly enjoy your informative, and competent commentary! I appreciate your taste in quality rifles and I recently purchased a beautiful Savage 340 in .30-30. As far as the Impulse, you mention the finish reminds you of parkerizing. Is it a treated metal surface, or a cerakote?

I don't remember if you mentioned this but for us southpaws, the bolt handle on the Savage can be moved to the "correct" side thereby addressing the one big headache we face with bolt action rifles. I'd like to make a general comment about Savage rifles. I own several now and I have found with my shooting abilities that their price performance is excellent. I am not a 1,000-yard competition shooter so I can't comment on their performance in match shooting but for me out to 250 yards, I find them to be very accurate rifles.

Great review. I've been eyeing this rifle for some time now. You now have the best video on this rifle, by far, on the net. Whenever I get an interest in a particular gun, I come to your channel and search for it. Thank you. (If this rifle does, indeed, have user interchangeable barrels, then I'd like one in .308 and switch the barrel to .358 Winchester. Wishful thinking, I know. But I love that caliber. ) By the way, what does USOG stand for? I've searched and can't find it.

Hello RP - You're words give me confidence and assurance that I'm doing okay. Gun owners are such fine people and guns are so integral to freedom and what is right for the people; not the way people think we are at all - I thought I'd try to make a channel reflecting that. In a small way, I guess I've made some progress. Thank you for being here and God Bless you and yours.

Hi Tony549 - a new rifle is the best and least expensive path to happiness. And the rifle is always a liquid asset - that goes up and up in value. I did some renos on my own house...my old cabinets and other things are worth nothing.

I think that I am sold on this as my first and likely only straight pull. The stock design appears nearly identical to that of my 110 High Country, which is OK, but would be nicer if threaded metal inserts were provided to anchor the buttplate and spacer. I think that I will paint the modular cheek riser to blend in better. Though I had to return that Savage rifle due to the imprecise location of optics mounting holes, that concern goes away with this rifle. Note that the rail is 20 MOA. I happen to have a Burris Eliminator III, which must be mounted at 0 MOA, requiring a front spacer for this rifle. I have a suppressor, and thus I value the threaded barrel end. All things considered, including price, I think that this is the one. Thanks for the great video!

Thank you for such an excellent and informative video. I do wish you had mentioned the apx prices of the European rifles you showed. Also you skipped over the ‘Accustock’ of the Impulse which is proprietary to Savage and a truly high functioning method of mating stock to rifle. I have one of the first Accustock rifles Savage sold and it the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. Thanks again. I will be subscribing to your channel.

wonderful review! for american consumption, i worry about acceptance of any radically new shooting system--but--i hope it ushers in new plans for other brands aiming at this continent. my concern for this model would be keeping grime/water out of the holes in the bolt for the locking spheres. this would not deter me as a fair weather shooter, but might for the person not afraid of being in the muck.
