Savage Daughter - Wyndreth Berginsdottir

Ойын-сауық

Recorded at Northshield Bardic Madness 2016 in Rokeclif.
Not part of the day's challenges. Since Wyndreth was present, she got persuaded to do a performance of Savage Daughter. And there was much rejoicing :-)

Unfortunately, you don't need an artist's permission to make a cover. If that was the case there would never be covers of songs.

This song reminds me of my childhood in the small strip of woods being our home. What a simple and magical blessing that was. Full to the brim with toads and rabbits and deer and birds and coyotes. When I left it, that nature said its goodbye with a full family of deer stopping and staring back at me. It was one of the hardest goodbyes of my life and I desperately need to find that sort of place for my wild children to explore.

Chorus I am my mother's savage daughter, the one who runs barefoot cursing sharp stones. I am my mother's savage daughter, I will not cut my hair, I will not lower my voice. My mother's child is a savage, She looks for her omens in the colors of stones, In the faces of cats, in the fall of feathers, In the dancing of fire and the cracks of old bones. (Repeat Chorus) My mothers child dances in darkness, And sings heathen songs by the light of the moon, And watches the stars and renames the planets, And dreams she can reach them with a song and a brooom. (Repeat Chorus) My mother's child curses too loud and too often, My mother's child laughs too hard and too long, And howls at the moon and sleeps in ditches, And constantly raises her voice in this song. (Repeat Chorus) Now we all are brought forth out of darkness and water, Brought into this world through blood and through pain, And deep in our bones, the old songs are wakened, So sing them with voices of thunder and rain. (Repeat as new chorus three times) We are our mother's savage daughters, The ones who run barefoot cursing sharp stones. We are our mother's savage daughters, We will not cut our hair, We will not lower our voice

What does the line "I will not cut my hair" mean to Norse people? I saw this song on tiktok being sung by a Native American woman, so I understood why the line "I will not cut my hair" was important. But I do not understand in this case! Also beautiful song!

The norse, swedes and Danes would grow their hair. Mostly, according to the edda's prior to Poetic, because it was a symbol of freedom. Many would shave their hair during times of war. Slaves would keep their hair bald so they would be recognizer as slaves. Hope this helps? Plus, the scandis took good care of their hair in general

This version rocks. I have found 1 cover in polish that i really like of it. Most of the others detract from the song by making either their voice or the instrumentals or both soft and compliant which contradicts the song in a (to me) off putting manner. Like i can still tell they can sing well and the song is obviously nice but there's a dissonance to it because of that.

Umm how? This song has been around for awhile (like 20years). Just because recently someone used it on tiktok doesn’t mean that it’s meant for their culture. The woman singing in this video actually wrote the song-and is of Norse decent. How do the lines about cats and brooms have anything to do with any other culture besides Norse/Celtic? Maybe do some research before acting like a brat online? kzread.info/dash/bejne/gnWppZigiJacpMY.html
