Sausage and Peppers! "Now that's Italian"

“U HAD ME AT KITCHEN”
ALEXIA teaches you how to make her “MAMA MARY’S” Italian Sausage and Peppers!
***RECIPE!
Ingredients:
2 ½ - 3lbs of Italian sausage (hot or sweet).
2 cans Hunts tomato sauce.
4 large green bell peppers.
4 large red peppers.
1 large Vidalia onion.
Granulated garlic powder.
Cracked black pepper.
Sea salt.
Colavita olive oil.
Fresh basil.
Pyrex or large baking dish.
Aluminum foil.
Start by washing and slicing your peppers into ½ inch strips.
Next, wash and slice your Vidalia Onion (slice into circles)
Slice your sausage into 1 inch slices.
In a large Pyrex dish or large baking pan add in some olive oil to the bottom of the dish.
Next, add in your peppers and onions.
Season to taste with granulated garlic powder, cracked black pepper and sea salt.
Stir well.
Next, add in your sausage and mix well.
Next, pour in your hunts tomato sauce.
Drizzle with some olive oil.
Cover your dish and put into a preheated oven at 375 degrees for about 2hours.
Remove your dish from the oven, remove the foil and stir well.
Place back into the oven for about 30-45 minutes until the onions and peppers are tender, some of the sauce reduced and the sausage is slightly browned.
Remove from the oven and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes prior to serving. You can eat this wonderful dish as is, pour over your favorite pasta, mix into rice or make a beautiful sandwich!

This is exactly how I make my sausage, peppers, and onions but with one difference: after I cook mine for about 2 hours and stir, I lower the oven temperature and bake it for another 1-1/2 to 2 hours. I also like to serve it on fresh store-baked sub rolls with sharp sliced provolone cheese.

I followed your instructions to a T. Not cooking the sausage first really is the way to go. It was the most tender italian sausage I have ever eaten, And I have eaten a lot! And so easy to put together!

I brown the sliced sausage and dump everything in the slow cooker, keeps the kitchen cool

Many people overuse the phrase “to taste”, but what would you say is a good starting point for proportions on garlic powder, salt, and pepper?

I would say a teaspoon of each ;-)
If I use turkey sausage , will that cook as easy as regular sausage or does it need to be cooked a bit in a pan beforehand?

Hi there... Because of the long cook time. I would say cook it the same way. It will cook through. Don't forget to turn a few times so it browns a bit near the end of the cooking process. Let me know how you liked it!!

In your video you state to cook in oven at 400 degrees, but in your written recipe, it says 375 degrees...does it matter which?

I use a lot of pepper and I always say season to taste. However, the scenes are cut down for editing purposes so maybe all the pepper was not shown on screen. Anyhow.. Thank you for watching!

Jeez...2 1/2 hours in the oven at 400F.....criminal waste! I cook my Thanksgiving turkey in about that time.....a simple dish that cooks in less than 30 mins on a stove!!!!

Hi John! Thanks so much for your comment. You can do 375-400 and it does really take that long because I am making a big batch! The cooking time works perfectly in this case. The sauce is delicious and rich, the peppers perfect and the sausage golden brown. After you remove the foil you can stir and brown for a little more cooking time. I promise you are going to love it! @@UhadmeatKitchen Thanks for the response but as I said peppers and sausage is a simple dish that cooks within 30 mins on a gas stove and is super yummy! wasting energy for cooking such a simple dish for 2 1/2 hours in the oven is definitely the lazy way of cooking but just a criminal waste!

Oh no I ❤️ hot sausage! I love things spicy.... I said people can use hot or sweet sausage in the dish. Also, if you want to use less peppers in the recipe you can certainly do so! That’s the great thing about cooking you can put your own twist on a recipe and make it your own. I just happened to love lots of peppers! I hope you enjoy my recipe! Cheers!

That’s what my Grandmother always used in this recipe. It’s essentially just puréed tomatoes. It’s really a wonderful recipe. Give it a try. Use the puréed tomatoes of your choice. 🍅🍅🍅
