    The dance always just makes me giggle, especially after knowing their own feelings on it later! Also, I think it sounds messy to us now because we know what they can do now. But I think back then it was so ground-breaking in the genre that the fact that they were even doing it made it "perfect" to the judges.

    Towards the end of the reaction you said you wondered if they ever go back to watch these, so I just wanted to let you know there's a Superfruit video where Mitch and Scott react to some of their Sing-off performances. It's so funny and interesting. You should check it out at some point, probably after you're done with these to avoid seeing anything you haven't seen yet.

    Sean’s comment about how good the show was that night reflects the fact that PTX had to immediately follow the Aires’s Who medley, which was easily the evening’s standout. This Britney medley was good, no doubt, but didn’t surpass the Aires. Unfortunately for the Aires, they never were as amazing again, whereas PTX just got better and better.

    The Dartmouth Aires did a Queen medley (Killer Queen, BoRhap, and Somebody To Love). You might be thinking of the Aires' Pinball Wizard performance in episode 4. In season 1, another college a cappella group, the Tufts Beelzebubs, did a standout Who medley (Behind Blue Eyes, Who Are You, Baba O'Riley).

    One of the things I enjoy about watching these is that they aren’t perfect. We’re so used to hearing them now-polished/produced, but this is all them and their raw talent on display. Yes they had a little help on the show, but they did the large majority of arranging themselves and you can see them getting better and better as they learn what works and what doesn’t. It’s really interesting and fun to watch.

    Avi and his Oompaloompa dance...🤣🤣🤣 I die laughing every time I see it. And, yeah, it sounded like a mess, because it was a mess. But, this is where it started. This is where they learned how to put songs that didn't really go together together, and set the stage for the medleys and evolution of... videos we see later on. They learned from this experience, and boy did they learn WELL, huh? And, it was less of a mess than what others were attempting to do. So, that set them apart, too. Sarah's verbal mess up toward the end of her comments? Her joke " I'm not drunk, I swear."? Do you remember when Paula Abdule got into so much crap on the set of Idol for being drunk on set? Same week. That's why the joke was so funny. When ya know, ya know, ya know? Lol.

    You're almost there. The three best performances are coming up. #7 will blow you away; #10 let the rest of the groups know they were going to lose; #12 gave us our Mitch-slap moment and sealed the deal. #12 was the last performance where outside voting counted toward the finals. Thankfully, b/c they're first finale night performance (#13) was rife with technical difficulties.

    You have to remember that the sound was mixed for the performance space, which is an auditorium. It wasn't mixed for a recording. That's why it sounds just a little weird in headphones lol this one wasn't my favorite of theirs, but the arrangement was still brilliant. Love these reactions!

    I know what you meant. Kevin and Avi sounded louder/out of…. Synch?… volume wise at the end. There is a SF video where they react to a sing off performance. Mitch commented on how Low he sounded here and said ‘I don’t like it!’ I think that is him finding confidence in himself and his instrument, and not feeling like he had to lean in to a lower voice. He owns his high range now.

    Yes, they've watched this. Scott and Mitch are most disapproving of the clothes they made them wear. Mitch in particular is more concerned over a hat they put on him than what he sang. One last comment! There was a really good acapella podcast at the time that had one of its hosts working as a staff arranger on the show this season. His cohost visited him and watched a taping somewhere around this point of the season, and they recorded Christopher”s non-spoilery stories of working on the show, including an excellent breakdown of the typical weekly schedule for the groups. They taped on Fridays, so Saturday morning, they would start working on their song(s) for the next show, which included the group performance featuring all of the groups who were remaining. They were left to themselves to get those done, with the staff arrangers assisting them if needed, then on Tuesday they had to perform their songs for the producers to see if they needed significant overhauls or even change their song choice, like PTX did with Believe/Video Killed. On Wednesday, they got their choreography and costume fittings and would then just finesse until the Friday morning dress rehearsal and then the afternoon/evening taping. Oh, and at some point, they would be driven to their location for the video package taping, which was always someplace picturesque, or at least more interesting than the Doubletree they were staying at.

  • @kathyastrom1315
    @kathyastrom13152 жыл бұрын

    The all-female group was Delilah. They only lasted one more episode. The judges had so many groups to get through even at this point of the season that, if your performance was just meh instead of truly bad, you were able to skate through to the next week. But, the judges’ comments would let you know that you had to up your game if you wanted to stay. Interesting, if telling, fact-Kirstin was the only woman out of five winners of the show, which reflects the overwhelming dominance of all-male acapella groups in the genre.

    At some point, on or off camera, it's worth watching the competition (mrduckbear has them on his channel). Pentatonix was groundbreaking in the idea of seamless transitions and a full mashup at the end. Up till then, groups would perform medleys more as just three songs one after the other without connection.

    It sounds messy to me, too. My feeling with this performance was that they were just trying to pack too much into 2 minutes. Sometimes less is more. Don't worry, SD, this is frequently regarded as the weakest of the series. Kirstin describes it as "horrifying" and Mitch suppressed all memory of doing it. After you finish this, please watch the Superfruit episode where they go back and look at their Sing off days.

    My least fav performance. too jarring on the ears....And why did Scott have to take over the lead?? It was a Britany song and Kirsty was doing fine...his voice was too heavy ....ah well we all know how it turned out lol
