I have a theory I would like to share about the ending of the anime. One big theory is that she imagined Zack there and killed herself. But I don't think she could've died by suicide. Especially because there were iron bars on the window and there is no way she could've broken them. I have a theory to actually to explain why Zack had a scythe and survived the execution. First off when they were both on Kathy's floor that proves that Zack could've survived the execution because he survived being shocked for a long time. Kathy clearly stated that most people would've died from it when he didn't. So that proves that he doesn't die easily. Also it's shown when they are escaping that Zack can break through iron bars with the scythe. I know you guys are thinking that his scythe broke and it did. I have a guess as to why he had it, but there's nothing to confirm it. Grayson said when Rachel was dying that everything would work out when Zack and Rachel got out of the building. I don't think that Grayson lied. So what if Grayson survived and somehow got Zack a new scythe after he survived the execution? He did say that everything would work out. Plus no one knows where Zack got his first scythe from and maybe it was from Grayson and well? Also the scythe that Zack had in the window didn't have blood on it unlike the previous one, so it had to be new. After that is when I think that Zack did actually go to find Rachel. The blood on the window at the end was either from Zack from the execution or from Rachel whenever she stepped on the windowsill to get outside with Zack. I either think he killed them both there or they both ran away. Thanks for listening to my theory.

@@jay-wv1ep Yeah I agree. It's happy and sad since that's what they both wanted but a lot of people that watched it wanted them to live. So that's why even though they both died people at least still can pretend that they ran off together. But I do agree that they both died after the end scene because that makes the most sense.

@@payton9665 actually Rachel does say in the closing song in the end it says that it's translated to Rachel saying that if it would hurt zack for her to stay by zacks side another day, so zack might have not killed Rachel, but that's just my opinion idk lol

@@payton9665 In the light novel series, it is canon that the police never found a trace of Ray or Zack at the scene or anywhere for that matter. Also there is canon concept art of them wearing different outfits (and I don't mean the AU stuff) which heavily suggests they live on together. As to your theory about the scythe, I agree! Either Gray helped Zack escape (the best time to escape prison was when he was being transferred for execution and the media wouldn't have caught on immediately so it would be assumed by the public it was carried out already) and then Gray helped him find Ray as well. Also he either got the new scythe from Gray or stole it from a farm somewhere (as that would be the most likely place to find something like that lol). Or so I theorize~ Also my theory as to why Zack's still wearing the same clothes and not say the orange prison jumpsuit is cuz he was granted a last request for his execution and that was what he asked for--to die in his old clothes. :D Also the blood on the windowsill was Zack's (in the game the blood appears as soon as he does and Ray is nowhere near the window at that moment). He might have been shot while escaping, but we all know Zack don't go down that easily so what's a few extra bullet holes? XD

I think the fact that it's so short makes it so perfect. Even though I love Zack and Ray, I'm glad that they didn't make a second season because it would be horrible to see such a great anime being drained to the point where it stops being good and gets boring. I'll just rewatch it over and over and wait for the last volumes of the manga so that I can buy them :D

I believe that the ending is for the viewer to create so my “ending” is that some how Zac got his scythe back (Payton 96 commented a theory about how Zac has his scythe and I agree with it) and he went to Rachel and when they go out of the window Zac kills her and he falls to the ground with her in his arms and they both die together. So they both got what they wanted. Also I love how the writers let us decide how it’s ends because there is so much that went into this and I personally didn’t know how to feel about the characters so it’s nice that they let us decide.

I almost forgot this existed. This series is so nostalgic to me and I remember back then when I used to have a crush on zack foster lol. The ending got me emotional makes me want to watch this anime again

I can feel the pain in Ray's voice....,.. And how she was desperate to be killed by zack 🤧.... Literally the most sad and yet meaningful song❤❤loved it......

I have no idea what this songs does to me, but it's a regard of something, something that never happened, something that I would like to live. I know this is very strange considering this anime's characters mentality... But I have no idea, I miss something that never happened, It makes me want to change realities to live something so strange that might make me happy somehow. I want to drown in ocean of dreams, this ocean was all the dreams I had with this anime, with this specific song. So many times I felt like Rachel, I felt lost, making a promise to try and escape the reality that has happened to me, Rachel was such a young girl and so was I... I hate having this feeling cus I know it's messed up.

i think zack died but he come back as an angel cause of their promise, even if zack isn’t an angel he come back somehow and broke the iron bars for her and then they jumped so ray died too. Rachel was the only one who needed to be save so Zack was the savior, he was the angel of death.

THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE!, it's literally the title and in the end Zack was lowkey floating in the air if you see that scene so its most likely that he's an Angel of Death.
