Having a similar model at work, and a Metler of similar vintage, the 'Cal' button is used to actuate that mechanism under the pan to place an internal calibration weight on the weighing arm. This allows the operator to correct minor drift between service intervals. Usually it requires it to have only the standard pan in place, but the manual likely has the instructions. This doesn't replace proper external calibration audits with certified weights if being used in an analytical lab. But it would be more than adequate for any amateur use. Nice job all the same! Glad to see good old tech seeing new life!

It will be a tantalum to be behaving like that. EDIT.. called it 🤓 nice fix, interesting bit of kit.

Did you notice, when you had the water in the glass, the weight was slowly falling as the water evaporated. Many many years ago I worked in a lab with a similar balance (it was kept on a solid granite bench to reduce any vibration) you could weigh a piece of paper, make a mark on the paper with a pencil and weigh the added graphite!. A man came every six months to calibrate it, white cotton gloves and his test weights were only ever touched with tweezers to prevent any oils from fingers affecting the weights.

That's really neat. I want to try that evap measurement now but I no longer have it. Would have been good to see how fast my alcohol evaporates.

Old tantalum capacitors are even worse than old electrolytics. At least electrolytics to not turn into small incendiary bombs.

Makes my kitchen scales look like crap! Very kind of the device to tell you what was wrong with smoke signals though...

I've never seen one of those before.

Neither.... but then I don't work in labs or have the need to precisely measure out drugs!

There's a print button, maybe the motor/mechanism is for that?

There's definitely no printer in this. I think that would attach to the connector at the back.

@@JonnyFix I will admit, I had the video playing while I was working, so paid more attention to what was said, rather than the guts of it! I saw the button and heard the mention of a button and connected the two, albeit, wrongly
