Excellent, excellent video! Thorough and well thought.
Thx man, great work and very clear. I have quite a bit of that stuff. Loves the shady areas. I’m going to harvest a bit and try it out. Thx.
This was very informative as I’ve always been interested in things like this. Thanks!
I grew up being told it was sassafras. Sarsaparilla is a thorny vine.
Very informative and enjoyable. I didnt know sarsaparilla and sassafras were to different plants.

@@blueskies6475 yes . At least every time I see it. I hope you find it . In areas that haven't been developed.
I live in Iowa and these plants look familiar to me here. You've not mentioned where you are hunting these. Do they grow in the Midwest? Great video. Glad I found your site. Always wanted to know about Root Beer sources.

Yes it does grow in Iowa
I’ve recently moved & our backyard is full of these, along with many other medicinal plants. Are you going to do a follow up video? You said you would post pic of the berries? & I would like to see how you process the root.

The naming here is interesting to me. At first, I was very confused because I'm in Alabama and when we say Sarsparilla we mean Greenbriar or Smilax species. I'm guessing this plant that you are showing is Aralia nudicaulis? I don't think we have it in Alabama! I'm now curious as to why they both have the same common name? Perhaps the flavor is similar!
@FoundYouForaging

Yes Aralia. There is a south American smilax they call sarsparilla . Used medicinally
@yungfrogleg

Similar medicinal use probably both are tonics and blood purifiers. Sarsparilla is smilax species, i always see this one called “wild” sarsparilla. I wonder what the Indian names are…

Its real interesting though because they look nothing alike. And it’s interesting that wild Sarsparilla is in the same family of plants as ginseng… tops are similar enough but the roots are completely different 😂 if only ginseng roots got that long lol
Thanks, I always thought Sarsaparilla was just the drink made with the sassafras tree. So its a shrub not a tree, does this plant get much bigger?

Sarsparilla gets knee high at times and gives An energy boost if roots are steeped. The flavor is unique and I like it with honey. The Sassafrass is a tree but is best harvested as a sapling and the dried root and root bark make a very refreshing summer tea. The flavor is very near modern root beer .
So if I were to make sarsaparilla would it be ok to use sassafras? You probably explained it but I am not good at listening sometimes :)
How did you get so knowledgeable about plant identification?

I had an extreme interest in nature at a very young age. My grandparents shared any traditional knowledge they had . My childhood was very near homesteading and foraging was a big part of our seasonal traditions. I continued to study and research local fauna throughout the years. I however don't consider myself as knowledgeable as I'd like to be. I think we all pursue interests throughout our time here . Some interest fade and others remain a core enthusiasm . I like to think the unique interests of everyone contributes to the whole of our communities. I for example cannot fix a vehicle , and am thankful another has interest enough to become skilled and willing to share with others.

@@FoundYouForaging I like your attitude towards life. I just gave you a thumbs up 👍. Am jealous of your knowledge of herbs. I know little of many plants. Didn't get jabbed. Just used herbs to be ahead of covid-19, but also combined herbs and pharmaceuticals to rid myself of the disease. Am 55 years old but still compete with 30 year Olds. The herbs help me stay young 🙏. Next on my list, gonna try Sarsaparilla.
I'm gonna have diner and the menus gonna be.... Presure cooked gator and sasafrass tea.
can sarsaparilla form into trees? Cuz we were told we have one yet it's about a whole story high & it turns into a wonderful orange with hints of red for fall.

@@FoundYouForagingI suppose it's a huge sassafras it was the size of a bush when we were told about it now it's a whole story high.
Can you grow sarsaparilla and cultivate it in a garden?

It's a shade loving plant and can be transplanted in shaded semi drained areas.
Is there a species with a red berry? I believe I got a big patch..

Berries are black . You might have bunch berry . Depending on where in the state you live
@Jacob41C

Red berries could be Aralia racemosa (American spikenard). Grows much bigger and has way more berries, but nudicaulis (wild sarsaparilla) gets a lot more positive reviews on the taste.
What state is this in ? I thought that it was tropical ?
@FoundYouForaging

The tropical plant refered to as sarsaparilla is smilax genus , two different plants . A good example of how common names can cause confusion.
What sarsaparilla is this Indian or Jamaican?
