Sarah Vowell on the "Smart-Alecky" Geneva Bible

Complete video at: fora.tv/2008/10/18/Sarah_Vowel...
In an excerpt from her book "The Wordy Shipmates," essayist and public radio commentator Sarah Vowell explains the difference between the Geneva Bible and the King James Bible. Vowell identifies the former scripture as the one full of "smart-alecky Protestant commentary."
-----
Sarah Vowell talks about The Wordy Shipmates. Vowell travels through America's past to 17th-century New England. She looks at the Puritan effect and finds their beliefs about church and state more interesting than their buckles-and-corn reputation would suggest.
Vowell is a regular contributor to public radio's This American Life and is the author of The Partly Cloudy Patriot - The Wordy Shipmates
Sarah Jane Vowell was born December 27, 1969 and is an American author, journalist, humorist, and commentator. Often referred to as a "social observer," Vowell has authored several books and is a regular contributor to the radio program This American Life on Public Radio International. She was also the voice of Violet in the animated film The Incredibles and a short documentary, Vowellet: An Essay by Sarah Vowell in the "Behind the Scenes" extras of The Incredibles DVD release.

You can thumb me down but I counted. She used 13 um's in only a 1 & 1/2 minutes. I have no disagreement in her story, only the use of um's.

Doctine: A belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a church, political party, or other group. Interpretation:The action of explaining the meaning of something. Paraphrase: Express the meaning of, using different words, esp. to achieve greater clarity When you express a Bible verse aloud or in writing, you'll be stating your doctrine (set of beliefs) and giving your explanation (interpretation). In doing this, you have no more added to the word of God than has the writers of the commentary.

The 1560 Geneva Bible is pretty hardcore business, and definitely not the Bible for everyone.

No. You are not sarcastic. It is good to question things . I'm a little surprised no one has answered you before now. Time is up, though. Jesus stands at the door. Simply trust Him and believe that He is who He claims He is. May we all repent, be repentive, and in meekness be made ready for His revealing.

I've studied the Geneva Bible a bit (I'm agnostic about God rather more than I am about the Tooth Fairy, but interested in social change, technology, power and language) and really I find the expression "smart-alecky" ... well, let's say amusing.
